Lowering springs!? Yes/No!?

Hi guys,

My rear spring has broke so it needs fixing anyway, but have just priced for all 4 springs to be replaced with being 25mm lower!

What's your thoughts on lowering the s3's!? Are they low enough already and will i regret doing it, or is it not as bad as some people are making out to be!?

Lowered mine recently and really transforms the car for the better in my opinion... Yes vote from me

Yeah went H&R springs mate for £228! I was gonna get Eibach but they only done fronts!
springs, plus front top mounts and labor for £438!
 
The H&Rs are a tried and tested solution, good choice. Ive just taken them out of my car and put in coilovers, and I gotta say the difference again is immense. My advice - upgrade your dampers also. Lowering springs on OEM dampers = crappy ride.

I did the same, one broke so I thought good opportunity to replace them all, went with 50mm H&R.


What shocks do you guys recommend then?

How many miles have your dampers covered?

Sorry but you're not entirely correct. Decent dampers shouldn't struggle with springs provided they are a sensible drop, ie S3s actually seem to ride better with lowered springs (in my case just fronts - Eibach) I believe due to the stiffer damping and possibly shorter piston on the stock S3 shock over other models. I found the standard springs almost did the opposite of bottom out; I felt like they were over-rebounding due to springs that were at the tall end of what they could cope with.
As for fitting lowering springs on standard dampers, yes I agree that tired dampers need to be replaced or upgrade but low-mileage units in good nick wouldn't pose a problem.

Dampers have covered 60K miles, so I'm guessing I'll have to change them?

Indeed! Very impressed that they seem better-matched to the S3 dampers than factory springs! I'm not SURE, but have you tried Ben @ Shark Performance? Failing that R-Tec might have them?
 
Not sure mate, will be worth having them checked out. I don't profess to know enough regarding their lifespan! If you can afford to upgrade the dampers as well then of course it's worth taking that route, sounds about time if you're uprating the springs.

What are your thoughts about having your car lowered 50mm immo!?

Tired dampers or not tired dampers, if you are lowering the car then upgrade the dampers. I drove for about 10,000 miles with the H&R springs and OEM dampers and I can assure you the ride is ******. There were only about 24,000 miles on my car when I put the springs in so the dampers were fine. And they were fine when I took them out last week as well. If you care remotely about handling / ride quality you will upgrade the dampers. Id prob go for Bilstein B8s.

Not true. I've fitted Eibach Pro-Kit to mine. I have experienced the ride, and handling, which are improved. If you want more meat on the bone of my opinions they are in my thread. OEM dampers cope fine (better) with Eibach springs, can't comment on the H&Rs though.

Tried R Tec and Damian @ DPM and they don't keep stock just middle men kind of just place the order once they been paid from Eibach!

I spoke to Eibach UK and theres none in for 2 weeks!!!

but, have you ever been in/driven something that has matched dampers and springs?

Its like saying a bed of nails is comfy if you've never experienced anything else.

I thought my H&R's were comfier than standard, at first, then after a short while 3k miles in my case it wears the dampers out so fast, remains comfy on flat roads but bounces all over the place causing it to be under dampened and uncomfy.

everyone always says its fine to put lowering springs on oem dampers, but 90% of those people have never been in anything else.

But in all fairness fella! You answered your own question unless we try we don't know and trying a set of the cheapest option ie front springs you can't really go wrong and feed back is great across the board on the eibachs

For me personally they will be a perfect addition to my car as I want it as OE as possible plus i'm 34 but going on like 50 yea old lol! Well so my MRS tells me.

All of this just my 2 pence worth lol
 
I'm not getting into a debate with you about it; I've had cheap coilovers, expensive coilovers, spring and damped sets, ****e spring kits and decent spring kits. For S3s ONLY, as that's what I have, the Eibach springs (Pro-Kit not Sportline) match the shorter, stiffer OE dampers better as the standard springs, same as S-Line height, result in the opposite effect to dampers "bottoming out". I'm far from in the minority to have this opinion, and way before fitting my springs I detected that mismatched dampers and springs were the issue with what really can be a crappy ride in the standard car.
