Morning Ya'll,

On my sunny drive in this morning i went a different way to work down a pretty bumpy road (wish i hadnt) as i heard a mad noise coming from the front (or sounds like the front) its either a very light bang or a tapping / rattling noise, defo metal on metal sound, but this stops when you brake, it may come back straight away or after a few more bumps / pot holes.

Never heard it ill now and is really annoying, heard a very light tap tap tap as the wheel was going round, didnt even have time o look when i got in (due to traffic half hour late). Goin try and have a look after work, but thought i would put it out there first,

Cheers

Had a good look at dinner, cant see to much without taking the wheel of so went for a spin, it sounds like the heat / dust shield is loose or bent casing it to touch and bang of the disc / wheel!!

I've had a couple of things cause annoying rattling before...

What are your brake pads like? These can rattle if they're getting low and applying the brakes will temporarily silence them. Had this on the rears of both my B5 and B6 A4;s.

Also when one of my exhaust brackets snapped that rattled too and seemed to keep quiet when I braked. I got it welded back together and the rattle was gone.

Ya hit the nail on the head there bud, the rears are ******, nearly down to metal, just had a skive and been for a look, defo these, i hope anyway, still goin jack it up an have a look just in case !!

Well had it jacked up tonight and yes the rear pads are 50% of the noise but the other 50% is the below, also can anyone spot the other fault

The bit with the nipple lookin thing on top has loads of movement in up and down

That's what will be knocking then. Be very careful when removing the pinch bolt. It does tend to snap then.it will need drilling out! Use plenty lubricant, wd40 etc and manipulate it gently til it's free.

Thats the other problem Dan, if you look at the picture you cant see the threads / bolt from the one on the other side which has already been snapped!! & as you can see the other nut has already been changed so someone has had a go at it before!!

Is it worth doin both sides, or just replace whats gone?

Oh, that will be fun and challenging to replace. Lol.

Personally I'd change both sides with a new set of Lemforders or Meyle HD arms. But it depends on what you can afford to do. If you buy a cheap set off eBay you can expect to change them again before the year is out. The sets I've mentioned are circa £380 mark for full set of arms for both sides. Plenty of info if you do a search on where to buy etc.
