Audi Connect SIM card choices.

Yep, I use this (well, I'm on my 2nd 3 month 3GB one) and am very happy with it

I just found out the hard way, whilst trying to use connect. Oh well, there's no such thing as a free lunch I guess. Not sure what there is to like about that news though.

I think this will be the best choice
Pay as You Go 321 - Price Plans – Three
1p per mb, if you look at most contracts, they are more expensive than this e.g. over £5/month for 500mb
and with this, if you don't use the full whack, you don't get charged for it!

I've bought a Three PAYG sim for it on the 3,2,1 plan. It's a penny per mb and because it's PAYG with no expiry on top ups I can monitor how much it's costing. Should be fairly cheap and Three have been starting their 4G switch on too.

Thanks for that. I now have my car and my 321 PAYG Three sim is working fine and other devices working fine tethered in :)

However I may need to go the pay monthly route as in only 2 days I have used 250mb ! So that's £2.50 already with my PAYG sim. How is everyone else doing for their data usage?

I have only used Google earth sat nav and a bit of surfing web on iPad. Haven't fully explored all of the Connect options as "My Audi" won't let me add my car!

Doesn't look like Ovivo is an option any longer, glad I went with a Three 3,2,1 SIM now.

BBC News - British firm Ovivo Mobile shuts down without warning

Hi Chaps.

Just been along to the Three store to collect a shiney new 321 SIM, ahead of this weekend's collection. Is there anything else I need to do beforehand to use Connect?

Also, the guy told me whilst I was there that the only way to topup the SIM when I've used the £10 it comes with, is to call Three from the SIM. Surely it's possible to topup via the Web? Got the feeling he was just trying to sway me into getting a more expensive preloaded deal. How have you guy's been topping yours up?

Cheers.

You can register it on the 3 website and top-up from there. Although I had real issues getting it to recognise one of my cards. A different card worked first time.

Also, other than have credit on it, there's nothing more you need to do - just plug it in and it works.

I did initially wonder why I wasn't getting traffic updates, but then realised you have to activate traffic in the MMI (you only get 3 years online traffic, but that doesn't start until you go in and activate it)

Thanks Gazzz, looks like the man from Three was being a little shifty then. Thanks for the headsup on traffic, as that's one of the main things I want to use it for. Looking forward to trying it all out.

Wondering why you only get a three year sub to traffic though. I take it you can payg after this then?

I've just been buying new pre-loaded SIMs each time the previous one runs out, cheaper than the topup costs I found!

I assume so. It seems everything lasts 3 years, as that's the length of the map updates too

Ah ok, how much is on the 321 SIM when you get it then? The chap in the shop said it had 10gB... If it's more then it does make a lot of sense :)

So I've just read through the posts above and have registered at myAudi so I can see all my widgets / apps. Most of them seem to be greyed out for now, until I enter the PIN into the MMI. I can't see anything for msg dictation though. I thought this was a Tech pack thing rather than a Connect thing.

I ordered mine on the website and it came with nothing on it. I then topped up £10, which gives you 150MB of data (you get this free each time you top up I think, but it only lasts a month), plus the £10 credit will buy 1GB of data.

I've just had a look and I've still got 133MB of the free 150MB remaining (having driven about 400 miles)

On my 321 SIM, I've still got £7.60 left of my £10 top up which was right at the beginning of Jan. Not bad, I say. :)

Ok cheers, so you get the freebie data on topup too..

Might save you having to order a new SIM each time then :)

Don't the pre-loaded SIM's often have an expiry on them? e.g. 1 month, 3 months, etc. The 321 topup doesn't expire (or the website says it doesn't) so in theory, is likely to work out cheaper.

Yeh, depends how much you use I guess.

Hang on, I thought we all had the 321? Don't they all come preloaded regardless of where you get them?

My mistake. Was getting the fact that the 321 comes preloaded with the fact that you can buy a SIM which is a preloaded one.

Cheers.

i better slip down the 3 shop tomorrow and get a preloaded sim ready for saturday AM!

Just been reading you can top up the 321 from cash machines too.

Blurb from the Three site

'Top-up at a cash machine.
You can top-up at any Barclays or HSBC cash machine if you have a card from one of these banks:

Barclays
HSBC
Nationwide
The Coventry
Yorkshire
Clydesdale
Creation
When you’re at the cash machine, you just need to enter your phone number and select the amount you want to top-up with. Your Pay As You Go account will be topped up using the money from your bank account.'

On a side note - anyone that's been stung by OVIVO, get in touch with credit card company (hopefully you paid by ccard) and you can dispute transaction with them and get the initial £20 back.

Edit - I think there may be a 90 day limit for this, from purchase to dispute...?

Cemerson - where do you get 3 month 3gb from and how much??

Amazon I got mine from. £20 or so, so a bit more expensive doing it that way but avoids shelling out £70 at once! They do a 1 month/1GB one as well.

Directly related to the issue of the SIM cards plugged in to our cars.

Pg 61 of the brochure and pages within the MMI Nav System Plus car handbook both describe various features available from the SIM in the car.

Firstly that this SIM can also be used for phone calls and texts. I have a phone/txt/data sim in my car as I dont always want to pair my main phone bluetooth. But so far I have not been able to make any calls or texts from my "car sim". I cannit seem to find any settings on the system that I have missed. I have left my main phone out f the car so it doesnt connect to try and force it to use the car sim but nothing.
Q1. Has anyone actually used their plug in sim for phone calls and texts?

Secondly - when paired with my main phone - I can receive texts in the car and they can be read out, but the text message dictation is not working to enable me to reply. The licence is activated but it keeps saying service is not available. My mobile (5S) has the required message access profile.

Pg 22 of the MMI Nav Plus handbook lists requirements as either an onboard SIM with messaging/data option (which I have) or a bluetooth phone with message access profile which I have. Yet this is not working. Dealer has initially suggested its the iphone 5S issue but the messages should be working anyway through the onboard sim !

Q2 Has anyone used text message dictation via their onboard sim card? or used dicataton with an iphone 5?

Good questions that I'd also like answers to. I've tried to find a way to make calls using the car SIM but no joy as I can't find menu for this.

In mine you just set up the car to use the SIM card instead of the bluetooth connected phone and it'll do it. Was an option somewhere.

Pretty sure I have in the past. I'll try later.

Hate to say it.. but I think the iPhone MAP implementation is incomplete. It supports some parts of the message access profile, but in Apple's usual way, they have their own dodgy interpretation of what following standards means and don't implement it fully or properly.

The service unavailable bit though could be that you don't have a data connection?

I'll try it out with the onboard sim later if I get a chance.

I couldn't see such a setting for looking but it's almost as if I am missing something obvious like that!

Thanks I look forward to hearing what you find out. I can sort of accept the Apple iPhone issue - but that brings using (or not as is currently the case) my onboard sim for calls/messages into focus as an issue!

Whether I have a good enough data connection for the text dictation is possible issue. Screen tells me I have 3 g but signal is little patchy here. I think I need to test that again when parked near to the local phone mast!

I've been wondering the same thing. I've tried calling the sim card's number and you don't even get a ringing tone on the phone that you're calling from, the call just drops straight away. Page 41 of the MMI manual states that it is only poss to call using a BT connected phone. I suspect that this feature has been removed as part of the November 4g equipment upgrade.

Probably right, and was probably only ever available using RSAP I bet.
