Hi Guys, A little guidance is needed TESCO fuel ruined my beautiful a4 v6 2.5 tdi

hi guys

Thanks in advance for any help!!


I filled up my tank with tesco diesel , i drove for about 5 mile and car became sluggish then died

i contacted RAC who after transporting me home told me he though it was the fuel pump and that the diesel didnt smell right?

i spent months trying to sue tesco but to no avail ,

All that happened 9 months ago and i have left the car unrepaired but now is time to get my baby back lol

the tank was drained within 1 week of it happening


i believe i will need to get pump reconditioned or purchase second hand unit


can anyone tell me , can i get pump from any 2005 2.5 tdi v6 or is there numbers i need to match?


also is there anything else that might have been effected?

And some people would have you believe all fuel is the same quality.. Sorry to hear this mate hope you get it sorted. How did you go about suing them btw?

I found out out from various sources that supermarket diesel doesn't carry some the adaptive that are present in normal diesel from normal filling stations and sued on grounds that this should be clearly advertised and Audi diesels are more likely to suffer problems I have found 50 cases in last 12 months


so please don't use supermarket diesel in your car

Tesco advertising there fuel as car killing wouldn't be good promotion, just like the messed up lungs on cigarette packets. Fully understand that you're upset (rightfully so; would of gone nuts personally), but this is not a winning court case and the majority of car enthusiasts would have advised other fueling stations.

Hope it all works out and the car is restored to full glory :icon_thumright:

This is what I try to tell people but a lot of them put their fingers in their ears! Supermarket fuel is ****!

9 months of no use...a new battery is surely on the shopping list lol
 
yeah i was just so annoyed with there attitude , so decided to have my day in court lol got some local publicity and free fill up from tesco
lol lol i wont be using it
 
did you send a sample away to be checked
has a garage said its the diesel that broke the car

So I now have a dilemma. A few weeks ago, I bought new tyres and was given a form to send away for £40 worth of free fuel vouchers. The vouchers have just arrived, and they're for Tesco fuel. I've always run the car on Shell V-Power Diesel.

Dare I risk it?
 
i deliver petrol diesel etc england scotland and wales
i deliver to esso shell murco asda morrisons and tesco and a few more.
i can deliver from one tanker to tesco shell murco asda from the same tank.
unless anything is added at the site its all the same.
i have run my diesel B8 for 160k on local tesco and not a problem.
our lass runs hes 09 ST3 on supermarket petrol not a problem.
untill i see 100% proof IE his diesel was sent away to be tested or anyone elses then ill carry on useing what ever is at the petrol station.

I quite regularly work at the refinery, and have seen shell tankers and tesco tankers both filling up with the same fuels.
I was always under the impression that they both used the same raw fuel, but additives were added at the tanker fill point, but if you drive the tanker, I guess thats not the case either
 
iv never seen anything else added after the fuel
unless its done at site after iv tipped it at the station

I don't think a one-off Tesco fill up will ruin your car. I've used Tesco diesel for the last 2 years but always add 100ml of Millers Eco Max at every fill up to increase the fuel cetane.

Diesel doesn;t have an octane rating.

Edit: just in case anyone wants to be fussy, it does have an octane rating, but you don;t want to increase it

You're right, of course, but having just looked again at the Tesco vouchers, I don't they're restricted to paying for fuel I think I can just spend them in the store on the weekly shop. :thumbsup:
 
Super market fuel is inferior that is the opinion of my car mechanic he has dealt with breakdowns and the majority who had fuel problems they were using fuel from super markets.

and your mech has sent samples away of each car he thinks the fuel has caused the problem ?
 
So are you saying that Tesco regular fuel is exactly the same as Shell's Fuelsave fuel?! Obviously V-Power is different (which is what I always use).

i didnt say that at all
the tankers have diffrent parts
i know what im filling up with weather it been derv derv super etc
the regular i carry i tip at all diffrent stations so i know what im filling and where
like last friday i was in sheffield with only regular petrol i delivered to esso morrisons tesco and sainsburys and a murco
all from the same tank

I think the OP has been unlucky with a contaminated batch of fuel - at best.

No way supermarket fuel is worse than 'normal' fuel in BP/Shell etc.

I've ran my S8 on their fuel for years and never had any issues.
I run my Jeep on their fuel with no issues
I have a fleet of 26 drivers in work, most of them use super market diesel and not once, in over nearly 500,000 miles A YEAR has supermarket fuel caused our VAG fleet (mostly vw passats mind you) any issues.

So I think, whilst I feel for the OP, and I hope he gets the car sorted, everyone needs to calm down with the "supermarket fuel is evil" BS.
 
Mine's always on the posh stuff, an extra couple of pence is worth peace of mind regardless of theories. If people want to cheap out on running costs and don't care about cars why not pick up an old 306 and run it on chip fat oil.

Since getting my A3 (petrol) I have always used Esso so I get my clubcard points and I lessen the risk of poor fuel. I have read this argument on numerous forums and there is never a clear-cut answer, here we have people who work in the business saying it's the same but elsewhere you have people claiming to be in the business saying otherwise. On a long trip I will usually use the premium stuff.

One thing I do wonder though, when there was that batch of bad fuel a couple of years ago which damaged cars wasn't it only Tesco/supermarket fuel stations that were affected?
 
If you actually did try to sue them surely their first question would be "please send us a sample for testing". Then you'd get a sample tested yourself.
 
I have experience of this before with fuel from Tescos at Ingleby Barwick in Stockton on Tees.
The car in question was a Mercedes diesel and after a few days of complaints and several phone calls it transpired there were forty some cars affected with contaminated diesel fuel. Tesco paid for Mercedes to fix the problem which was just as well as the final bill was just over £8000.
Good luck and if Tesco are to blame keep at them and they will pay up.

Its like this. If I had a nice diesel motor and I thought for a second there was the chance of damaging it in some way using Supermarket fuel (and lets just be honest, there ARE MANY stories of this. No I am not going to post links but I have read them and talked to those affected) I would choose fuel from a proper filling station. Why take the gamble for the sake of a few pence? If you have a nice motor you should pay what it takes to run the thing right. I suppose it comes down to pride in your motor really.
 
Its a tough one but plenty mechanics do state that supermarket fuel is crap. Most are probably sat on the fence with it but i personally without a doubt noticed a difference in my previous car which was a TDCI mondeo 130ps, On Shell diesel it ran and sounded pefect but on Asda diesel it was a clunky roughy noisey running, i used to run for ages on shell then the odd occasion i was caught out and forgot to fuel up (nearest shell is 30 miles away) i would use Asda and it really was night and day............ For the sake of a few pence and piece of mind Shell wins for me in the Audi thankyouverymuch lol
 
To the OP try Chris Adams adams24 on here, Drop him a PM what he doesn't know about the 2.5 V6 isn't worth knowing. He lives in North London if you are anywhere near that part of the world. Regarding the issue you had if you could have proved that other people had suffered issues with contaminated fuel, and that you hadn't miss fuelled it yourself then you might have got some where.

Bloke at work had that, stuffed both his cats and his sensors up, tesco paid for the lot.
I reckon tesco fuel is pretty much like their food, poor!
Just had a look see, turns out we both run our cars on Shell.
 
I've mostly run my cars on Shell but my neighbour, who worked at Grangemouth refinery, insists that all fuels are the same, ie unleaded from Tescos is the same as everywhere else. Shell isn't that much more expensive now anyway so I usually stick with it. Not noticed anything untoward on the odd occasion I've filled up my Audi or VWs at a supermarket.
Only exceptions were my previous Subarus, Tesco 99 or Vmax were fine, they hated anything else, who knows!
 
You took Tesco to court because your fuel pump died and a recovery guy said the fuel smelled funny, and you lost, right?

Do you have a fuel analysis you'd like to share?
You drained the tank, but left the car for 9 months, why was that?

2 weeks ago I had to go to court in Swindon, ran low on fuel so filled a£20 at a BP petrol station, as soon as i left, the car started acting funny with limp mode like symptoms ! Did not have a choice but to run it like that due to being late to court. Got to a Shell petrol station and filled up the tank but no change, the car acted funny all the way to london. Took it to the garage a day later and changed the fuel filter- i found some strange emulsion and cloudy bits which clogged the filter no doubt ! My car was very susceptible to fuel contamination as it's heavily tweaked- was a 300 Bhp diesel engine ! I never, ever fill at supermarket fuel stations, the fuel there is no better + it gets contaminated very, very easy !
 
why would supermarket fuel get contaminated anymore that say an esso station
and quite a few stations at supermarkets dont belong to them the morrisons at carcliffe in sheffield is run buy esso
i drop my fuel at any station i visit the same way as i would anywhere so unless someone after or before me drops something in the tanks i cant se how.

If you ran your tank right down there is a possibility that it's sucked up some residue from the bottom of the tank and clogged the filter.

Its most likely water contamination or miss bunkering,where the delivery has messed up and mixed petrol with diesel.
My uncle had this with a truck and the diesel smelled of petrol,the fuel company came and collected the contaminated fuel and replaced with proper 100% diesel,as the truck wouldn't run on it.
Have you got the receipt and does it have the correct fuel on it?
 
Yes mate, allways get a receipt as i need to keep taxman busy and happy ! It was mostly biodiesel with some strange rust like emulsion on the bottom of the bottle, the thing is the vp44 fuel pump is not fussy- i run my other allroad on a mixture of petrol, diesel, engine oil, gearbox oil and brake fluid, pretty much if it can be pulverized then it will run on it ! Supermarket fuel is crap, i feel it everytime my missus is using the 5p off offer from tesco !
