Pentagon Supaglass... Theft prevention... Thoughts!?

Hey guys... Been a few threads on recently about recent thefts and attempted robberys... Between myself and Artimus we came accross this.... It looks ideal to me, the company is still in existance by the looks of it, just checked their website... Might give them a call and find out costs... Could be an alternative to anyone wanting to beef up security without a hefty alarm system... Whats your thoughts!?

I know of someone that had strengthened glass, and over time I think it was the clips that hold the window in broke causing it to fall out all the time.

Might be worth asking if they are heavier than normal glass.

Trouble is also, they'll only ruin the rest of the car trying to get in.

Yeah very true... But its just that little extra time thats needed to realise they are there and do something about it... Most guys wouldnt hang about if they'd tried to break the glass... I'd imagine, youd only need to do the front 2 as 9 times outta 10 its always the windows they try... Hit that 1 and it doesnt break, i'd asume they wouldnt try the rest for fear of making anymore noise...

Even if they were to crawl in through the back... It would be a bat to the head when they tried to get back out again!

all depends on where the car is and how determined they are right enough!

See you say you think it's be the front windows but I remember watching the cop programs years ago and the thieves used to hit the rear windows because they were smaller and break easier. They were saying it only takes a tap with a screwdriver handle in the corner, not the centre, of the glass to smash it. Seems the windows are weaker in the corners.

Glass is more structurally rigid in the corners of the pane due the support of the frame so it doesn't flex as much as when it's hit in the centre (greater the flex the greater it absorbs the impact shock).

You sure it's not just a film that goes on the std glass, similar to a tint? I looked into this for my RS4.

FWIW,Lexan racing windows are very expensvie,prone to scratch damage,and AFAIK aren't exactly road legal.

I posted about this stuff some time back and was challenged as to how you'd be able to break out of the car if the worst happened and you were in a crash where the doors wouldn't open. I'm sure it bags and is one way (e.g. can be kicked out, not in), but I'd seriously consider it at the moment given the recent sludge of light fingered thieving scumbags doing the rounds at present.

I looked into this stuff a while back when Black Editions and RNSE units were disappearing from Leeds like hot cakes... it's not cheap!!

I read somewhere (pretty sure it was on here but I could be wrong) that someone had recently had his RNSE stolen even though he had Pentagon security film installed. The thieves basically shoved a screwdriver or something behind the glass and popped the window out like it was nothing. The result was needing a new RNSE unit, new glass but also a new frame (not sure if that's the correct term??) because it had been bent and damaged when they pried the window out.

I decided against it after I read that because it's very expensive stuff and is clearly no deterrent to determined thieves!

Just a heads up because I was sold on the idea of this stuff until I read that.

Thats a very good point... If they were to pierce a hole in it and then hook the whole window out... Thats a question i'll be directing at pentagon when I speak to them...

I cant imagine its going to be cheap at all... Made to measure glass... Might be an alternative to those who are thinking of spending a few £££'s on an uprated alarm system.. What does that do at the end of the day... A louder siren!?

Personally I think that all manufacturers should be looking into security a bit more... Audis alarm siren is a joke... I can hardly hear it when i'm in the house and its on the driveway...

does anybody know the price of a normal side window!?

Just saw this thread! But as said I'm sure it's a film stuck to the inside of the glass, rather than replacement windows. I wouldn't expect it to be more than £3-400 for side & rear fitting.

Good point Jameze makes though. Let us know how you get on with Pentagon Jacko.

I read its £400 for a five door,its only laminate so cannot see it being massively heavier.

Hmm id be interested in this. Pros and cons though. I mean its only a deterrent, its not infallible, but it might just be the difference between loosing something valuable. Do you just fit it yourself I wonder? Cause that would be a bit of a ball ache!

Yep. Plus the fact it demonstrates this in the video posted in the OPs post so safety doesnt seem to be an issue with it at least.

Fitting the fronts wouldnt be too difficult... I've done a few window regs on these.. Its a bit of a faff yeah.. But not that bad... Although you would need to be handy....

Yes! That's what it is... A film... Just several times thicker than tint films... I use 100micron film for public buildings/schools/MOD

Not tried to fit it to convex windows, often thought about it but would think the stuff I use is too thick and wouldn't take the shape

back in the 90's my mate had a pimped Cav that had an alarm fitted and when armed and you stood to close would sound "Step away from the car" fun for 2mins then became annoying lol.

Just dug out the quote I got in 2012 from my nearest place to give you an idea of price. I was quoted £200 for the fronts and an additional £450 for the rears. The actually said on the email "We have had a increase in A3 due to the multimedia unit fitted at the front." which says it all really!

From what I recall you drop off your car and they then take your windows out in order to fit the film right up to the edge of the glass.

Definitely good stuff for keeping the opportunists out and if I was fearful of car jackings I'd probably invest. Maybe when my Aventador gets delivered!

All this is is a thick clear film (like a very thick clear window tint).

Just search for security film on the net.

Yes thats very true, all depends on how badly they want your car, but the majority of criminals out there are idiots and the smash n grab type.... This at least helps from your rns-e, buckets or valuables from being smashed and grabbed... (Although valuables shouldnt be on display anyway) . But unfortunately if you are to meet 'super criminal' then that would be up to you on how you handle that... Glass isnt gonna help any... But thats not what we're talking about here... Its not theft of the whole car... Again its to aid smash and grab prevention!

I'd like it if it guaranteed me against theft but let's be honest it's going to slow them down. If they have time they will F your car up even more to get in really won't they. Or if they decide they are annoyed by your attempt to stop them so think, why don't we smash all there windows and slash there tyres. I'd prefer to spend money on better home security, of course I understand your car isn't always at home but it's seems to be where the majority of break ins happen

Yeah totally agree... I have the sensor lamps and cctv and the car is parked on a driveway... Its more the multistorey carpark scenario that i'm thinking of, might give someone more time to react to it... Especially if it was on my driveway and got smashed... The extra time taken would be enough time to react to the situation and believe me i'd make an example so no 1 would try it again...

I have theiving scumbags... My crosser got stolen out my shed... Got it back a cpl hrs later though!

Yeah a guy at work has a proximity alarm on his Renault 5 haha. I think it's a pretty good idea actually, obviously dependent on various factors just like everything but it could deter someone from even looking inside your car to see what's worth stealing if the alarm is going off just because they're stood next to it.

Yeah a guy at work has a proximity alarm on his Renault 5 haha. I think it's a pretty good idea actually, obviously dependent on various factors just like everything but it could deter someone from even looking inside your car to see what's worth stealing if the alarm is going off just because they're stood next to it

Procimity alarms used to be a big thing years ago... I think everybody got a bit fed up with the alarm going off constant with people walking by and cars driving past it... Surely must be able to adjust the radius on it though in this day and age
