poll to see if necessary or luxury :)

please vote.

There is no poll... But I'd say no to them. I'd rather someone hit my wing mirror which is easily replaceable than taking out the whole door

How would they take out your whole door?

The folding mirrors also fold when hit by the way.

Sorry I meant in a supermarket car park for example. I always try to align my car so if someone opens their door wide it will more than likely hit the wing mirror and not the car door. To avoid any dings etc if you get me? As they stick out further etc

I don't think they are necessary. We have ordered them though. As you say - a little luxury.

The automatic ones are good for knowing that the car is definitely locked.

I have to manually control the folding mirrors on the Golf. Rarely use them.

Folding mirrors are a definite necessity down here in Cornwall, especially around the country lanes.

During the holidays ('silly season' as it's known), the place is full of tourists who either have no idea of their own car width, or cannot reverse when meeting on a narrow lane.
I'm forever folding my mirrors in to help some holidaymaker squeeze past (except for the dozy woman last year who firstly refused to reverse into a gateway she had just passed and then when the traffic behind me began getting impatient, she reversed flat out into and up a hedge!)

Don't need folding personally, but would love auto dip! I don't know if that's available or not.

Why aren't they automatic? When you unlock the car the fold out and when you lock the car they fold in?
I have so many times forgot to fold them out when I'm driving away :D suddenly I notice that I can't see anything in the mirrors :D

With single track roads near where I live I wouldn't be without them. However I found out to my cost when I got the car they don't retract until you drop <10mph. On my old car they folded in at any speed.

Likewise my garage is too narrow so I use it every time I park.

I've spent some time sat in the car waiting when my wife goes to pick something up from a shop in town. The way people mindlessly walk between cars in car parks is another reasoning glad they told in, particularly in very tight spaces, but I'm tempted to try the suggested method of leaving them out as a 'door stop' as suggested above.

they do there's a setting in the menu to make them auto.

Do they unfold on remote unlock?

Or only on ignition?
I have the keyless entry system and when you open the door the mirrors stay folded until you turn the ignition on.on touching the door from the outside to lock the car the mirrors fold. not tried the keyfob but assume it will be the same.

What? I don't have that...or I need to check that again. Tried to find it before but I didn't :D
Maybe I just missed it.

Mine fold when I lock the car and unfold with the ignition.

in the drive select screen go to menu....car...systems...vehicle settings...central locking.....fold mirrors ON
the mirrors work the same with the key as with the keyless.

Shame.

I'd quite like the mirrors to unfold with the remote unlock.

Luxury!!

To be honest the mirrors are tiny and folding doesn't make much if a difference in my opinion

I think they are really useful, but not essential.

I was wondering why it wasn't working on mine then followed this and it now works!!, cheers

It would be annoying to lock the car and leave it, return to get something in the glove compartment and watch the mirrors fold out and in again, I think. I like the way it is done: fold on lock, fold out on ignition.

How did I miss that :D Thanx!
It seems to be working now.

This is one of those things that if you don't have it you don't miss it. I love it, confirms that the car is locked, looks cool too!

Agree, while you walk away from your car doubting whether you locked it, you don´t have to press the key again, one look is enough.

My guess is somewhere between the two options; they are not a necessity but neither are they a luxury especially @ £150, so I will obstain.

I am good with my choice to have them.

Not got folders on mine and after getting it in and out of the garage for 4 months I wish the ****** hell I had them

While they really should be standard on S-line and even Sport, £150 is a steal compared to the price of having it done afterwards.

I find that having the mirrors in their normal position is essential to getting the car through my narrow garage door without damaging the sides of the car; after all, if the mirrors go through so will the rest of the car!

I have folding mirrors in my 2010 A3 Sline , but only on adjustment switch in drivers door panel ?
I have the Audi Nav plus in it ? But can't find central locking in dash display or in head unit ? Am I doing something wrong or does it not have it ?
Confused.com lol

Almost didn't bother... But like rain sensing wipers, now I've got them I wouldn't be without them - very useful, especially the near side dipping function on reverse...

I've had two cars need replacement mirrors... once something must have driven to close and knocked it off. The other time someone had kicked if off. I don't know why but when mirrors are folded in the just look more difficult to remove.

Just out of interest can the mirrors go out of sync? Could one fold faster than the other?

Yeah, I have them on my A1 and one of the mirrors folds ever so slightly quicker than the other... but they always fold to the correct place. That's the main thing.

my big garage at home has 2 daft 2M door entries, hence the need for folding mirrors. it fits without folding but it's tight.

yeh same here 2 stupid 2m wide garages designed for a1 sized cars and nothing else

it baffles me why builders don't make single garages that fit an average sized car like the a3 and made after 2000. instead garages are designed for a small car made in the 1970s!!

Because of money of course. A small garage is cheaper, and a large proportion of people never park more than the lawnmower in there.

Hi folks, first post, I ordered an S3 saloon last week, specced the Comfort Pack, DSG and ACC but forgot to spec the electric folding mirrors.

I noticed on the configurator it says they're body coloured mirrors, I presume on the S3 they'll still come in aluminium colour, is this right?

Just wanted to double check before I amend my order.
