Failing that just go for a comparison site. Comparethemarket.com is the one I tend to find easiest to use.

For me personally eSure, Admiral and Hastings always seem to be amongst the cheapest providers. But obviously it will change depending on your circumstances.
If there's a more reputable firm you'd prefer to use that don't use Comparison sites (Aviva and Direct Line are two that spring to mind) you could always try getting them to match a cheaper price that you've gotten from a comparison site. No guarantee but you've got nothing to lose.

I have not found a broker who can beat my DIY approach to car insurance. They have to take their cut/make a profit.

I would try LV.com or John Lewis Insurance.

Well as others have suggested - I would go to comparethemarket.

But also go and get a quote directly from the insurer's website - in my case Churchill quote from their website was £60 cheaper than the same quote through comparethemarket. Also use quidco - with a lot of insurers you can get a sizeable cashback (i think it's around £50 with Churchill). Another suggestion is Tesco Bank - I had a write off with them few years ago and they handled it rather well (maybe I was lucky).

I personally wouldn't go with Admiral or any of their affiliate company - they are always by far the cheapest ones, but in all the customer satisfaction rankings they end up at the bottom. If you do have to make a claim you might regret being tight.

How long have you held your driving licence for ?

That's a fair point.
Luckily I (touch wood) never had to make a claim when I was with Admiral so don't have any experience of their Customer Service really.

I also do my own shopping around and so far LV and John Lewis Insurance have also given me the best quotes especially as Motor Legal Assistance can be provided by registering with Audi Ensurance. This cuts the LV quote by £23.65. I am currently insured with LV for my existing A3. As a first time insurer they may want a high Excess value but you can also take out Excess Insurance. I am most probably going to take out GAP Vehicle Replacement insurance with ALA and they offer to cover a £500 excess for £35.00 which will probably be less than a policy with a lower Excess Level.

Don't forget that on a new car Audi offer 7 days free insurance, worth going for...

Sorry to hijack, but I was wondering about this the other day.

To get the main insurance excess paid, do you have to make a claim with the GAP insurer? By this I mean is the excess only covered for a total write off / stolen and not recovered vehicle? Or is the excess a separate cover provided by the GAP insurer?

Hope this makes sense.

That will save you oooooh less than a fiver probably ! A useful service to get you on the road quickly but does anyone actually buy Audi insurance ? They quoted 3 or 4 times the premium we eventually paid for our S 3!

As far as I can see the Excess Insurance is linked to the excess on normal insurance because you can only take out the policy for one year. John Lewis Insurance will include on their policies for an extra £30.

I therefore it covers any excess you may have to pay because of an accident or damage where you cannot claim the excess back from a third party and is not connected directly to the GAP insurance. With ALA they will only sell you the Excess Insurance if you take out GAP Insurance with them but other companies also offer it as a stand alone item.

Its not about saving money PA but about giving Dave more time to shop around. Yes there is no need to buy the expensive audi insurance and all they do is email a quote.
You do jump to the wrong conclussions sometimes...

I've used the complimentary Audi 7-day insurance in the past. It just makes the dealers job a little easier when they register the new car. I will then just phone LV and transfer my existing insurance across to the new car. As the registration number will be the same LV don't even have to issue a new cover note.

As the salesperson didn't know I wanted the 7 day insurance, he didn't ask me, until I told him the day I collected the car, I think insurance isn't needed by the dealership anymore to register the car. I just made the phone call to set it up whilst I was working through the paperwork with him..

So that means you can buy a new car from a dealer with bothering to insure it. Strange.

Some dealers I believe basically use the seven day insurance as a money-making scheme; it would appear they get kick-back from the insurers for each quote given. My Audi dealer said they didn't receive commission though.

Would agree with the comments about Admiral; thankfully I didn't have to claim whilst I was with them but dealing with their customer service was bad enough...

No proof of insurance was requested and as I said the salesperson never offered it either. So not sure about it being money making....

As far as I'm aware the free 7-day insurance was first implemented to make the dealers life easier when needing proof of insurance for registering a new car. Not sure what the current situation is. I will ask next time I visit my dealer, probably with the Registration Number Retention Certificate.

Audi Insurance's initial quote was high but they lowered it as soon as I ummed and then lowered it again a few minutes later and again after "speaking to the manager". They don't insure modifications though which matters to some of us although probably not the OP.

Hi guys, thanks sooo much for the replies. Been very helpful. I'll be sure to post pics of my Audi A3 Saloon as soon as i get it. Cheerioo!

After the 7 day Audi insurance I used Compare the Market and went with Tesco - £203 fully comp with £400 excess and legal cover on my SB S line TDI 184 quattro. I'm 47. Clean licence and no claims history.

£400 excess? mine was £225 with £150 excess, also clean licence, 58 and full no claims with Ensleigh...
