Okay so i spent today de chroming the front grill and getting it a nice matte black colour. Completely changes the front end IMO, but yeah here is the guide:

Tools
1 x Can of black Plastidip (£16 off eBay)
2 x Small flat head screwdrivers
1 x 100mm masking tape (didn't have any to hand to i used 24mm and 100mm clear low tack packing paint)
1 x Microfibre Cloth
1 x Glass Cleaner

Step 1:

Removing the 4 rings badge. Okay so i didn't get any photos of this actual process but what i did was prise the left side out with one screwdriver then insert the other to hold it out more then use the first driver to push the clip up and it should disengage. Its a very fiddly job but doesn't take long. I moved along doing all the bottom ones first then I did the two side ones. For the top 4 clips i didn't use the driver to prise simply pull down and out and then use a driver to push the clip and continue until all 4 are out and your rings are free! Leave the S3/S-Line badge on

Step 2:

Clean! to be fair it depends how dirty it is but my surround and center was pretty cleans so i just cleaned it all with a glass cleaner (fast drying/no smear) but you do have to make sure it is all clean and dry!

Step 3:

Tape Up! okay so i used 25mm tape for the close stuff then used a low tack 100mm tape for the surrounding areas. Here's the key part when you tape close to the edge DO NOT tape right up to the edge. This is because when Plastidip hardens it comes off as one and if you do it right to the edge your going to pull off the dip on the chrome as well. The gap also acts as a seam and the dip will actually tear in this seam. Don't worry plastidip comes straight off so its not going to affect your paintwork. For taping the S3 Badge just put a piece of tape over it youll find the backing plate is black anyway!

Step 4:

First coat! Okay so the first coat is going to be a really light coat at about 50% transparency. When spraying this stuff make sure your about 15 cm away, spraying on a horizontal axis with the can aimed slightly down (prevents overspray onto the radiator) and never stop on the areas your spraying always over spray and stop and go back on the tape. I made the mistake of stopping and i got a textured result on my first coat but hey ho its only the first one. Also i only did one pass over one area on this coat being as its more of a bonding coat. Now wait half an hour and go to step 5

Step 5:

Apply your second coat! Using the same method, horizontal action slightly tilted and only one pass over. Wait another 30 mins.

Step 6:

Apply your 3rd coat! Again same method. Wait another 30 mins.

Step 7:

Apply 4th coat! Now the coats should have really started to build so this time were going to do 2 passes over the whole thing. I would do one pass and cover it all then start again and do another pass. Again wait 30 mins

Step 8:

Apply your 5th coat! Same as 4th coat two passes over the entire grill. Now wait 45 mins - 1 hour.

Result:

Step 9:

Remove Tape! Okay so start to remove the tape very slowly ensuring that the plastidip is coming up from in the seam/gap and off the paint work it should come off quite easily seems we have given it plenty of coats!

here you can see where the tape ends and the plastidip starts, it almost acts like a tape itself!
Step 10:

Refit the 4 rings (very easy just push on, however make sure they are the right way up!) Clean off any excess but dont try to clean the plastidip just yet, and then stand back and admire your results!

If you get any runs:
This was my first go at it and i'm really impressed with the results. It wasn't perfect i did get a small run however if you wait the 30 mins till the run is touch dry then use your finger (with a glove on) dip in some thinners and rub the run until it is gone and then wait for it to dry and respray the entire thing again.

This guide can be applied to any plastidipping, i used about 3/4 of a can for this i wanted there to be lots of coats for protection and it makes it easier to take off. I did it today in the shadow of my house but air temp was at about 13 degrees. I only waited 30 mins because i wanted to ensure it had ample time to dry. But it does take 4 hours to completely dry so try to avoid touching it for that amount of time. I wasn't worried about overspray onto the radiator because its distance from the grill ensures that the plastidip is well dispersed and it shouldn't cause any problems anyway as its still flexible up to 93 degrees!

Anyway i hope this helps anyone that wants to spray their grill!

Looks boss mate. Really considering but think I would ruin it no matter how instructed this guide is ha

I personally would remove the grill if I was to go down this route as overspray gets everywhere!

But FairPlay fella looks to be a great job!

Cheers for the comments guys. I thought about taking off the grill and i was abit worried about doing it but plastidip isn't like spray paint its very very easy to use and its quite targeted if that makes sense i.e when it comes out the can it doesn't disperse nearly as much as paint does. And the great thing is if it does go wrong you can just peel it off!

Did you just do a thread on the instructions on the tin!? Also you have forgotten to glossify the surround....

Good results for a temporary solution... Will look tired after 6months but fair play!

There's always 1 that has to put a downer on things I personally think uv done a fantastic job the glossify from plasti dip is crap and pointless it does give it a slight gloss affect but personally I'd use lacquer All in all brilliant job mate

Yeah thats right... Use lacquer over plasti-dip!? I rest my case with that 1... Yeah fair job, but to do a how to thread is slightly over the top for plasti-dip when if you done a search on the forum theres 100's of threads on the same thing!

I'm not quick to critisise...but to do a 'how to' thread without even taking the grill off the car, and doing the procedure correctly 100% slightly pushed my buttons a bit!! Lift that bonnet to a chrome top will look terrible in my opinion

But fair play as I said to the attempt!

1000's?? find me one on an S3 grill..

Also why take the grill off when you don't actually need to?

You're right the instructions are on the can however some people that aren't as giftedly minded as you clearly are.. and need a bit more instruction plus some little tips on how to do it.

As for the clear coat i didn't want a shiny finish i wanted a matte finish.

Why bother criticising when it has clearly worked and i have taken my knowledge of this from a professional that does entire cars in plastidip with exactly the same method!

I only bother critisicing 'as you put it' as its not the correct procedure to do your grill properly... If you titled a thread 'i've just plastidipped my grill' and gave advise rather than passing it off as a 'how to' thread then I wouldnt have bothered.. But to claim a 'how to' thread your method has to be 100% correct and if it isnt then prepare for some criticism off someone who knows how to do it properly!

It as simple as that... Show me a pic of your edges after 2 months and you'll see exacltly what i'm talking about... And it doesnt specifically have to be a S3 grill.. A grill is a grill... Put platidipped grill in the search bar and see how many threads it returns!

and I did give you kudos for the attempt!!

Nice job m8, but poor radiator lol?

Also clear laqure can be used over plasti dip to give a gloss finish^^ i have done a set of Focus RS alloys in blue then laqured them and they looked mint! Will upload pics tomorow, and before people say it wont come off? Of course it will because the base coat of Plasti Dip is already there,

I'm not saying lacquer cant be used... Of course it can.. But the whole point in plastidip is for a temporary colour change... And to laquer on plastidip, of course the base layer is plastidip.. But lacquer is lacquer and if done correctly will need to be chisled off rather than peeled....and will also make a right mess...

Again I state that this was a fair attempt to be used by anyone as guidance... Shouldnt be passed off as a 'how to' thread tho.. Thats where my problem lies! And was only stating my opinion as what the forums are all about no!?

Correct. However just because you "know how" doesnt give you the right to say this isnt a how to thread. Does it show how to do what i have achieved in the results pictured? You'll find the answer is yes and therefore it is a how to

Have you plastidipped your full grill... No..! Youve just de-chromed it... And that hasnt even been done properly! So your title is wrong for a start!

I'm not getting into a war of words with you cause i'll rip you to shreds... It was only my opinion and sorry that your ego cant handle that, but threads are open to positive and negative comments thats the beauty of forums...

So I apologise for ******* on your bonfire on this thread but what I said is fact! If you dont like it then thats your problem... I was looking at your other thread aswell thinking you had some good ideas when others were criticising that also... So good luck to you...!

How haven't I done the full grill?

Clearly it's not me getting wound up by this :) apparently you need to be a rocket scientist to post a how to guide on this forum so I won't bother in future.

Needless to say I think it's done the job I haven't stated this is the perfect guide and the best way I simply offered my advice to achieve the results I have got. Not surprising this forum lacks how to's nowadays

If someone wants to see a quick way to temporarily matt out their grill then this is a fine 'how to', the results look pretty decent man good job, although I also did wonder about the rad.

I'm looking at the slats in your picture and they still look grey to me... So hence my comment about the full grill... And trust me im not wound up by this either... I just stated that your how to thread was inaccurate... Yes it may be accurate to the way youve done it, its its by far the wrong way of doing it.... And you jumped down my throat with your defensive comment instead of taking critisism on the chin..

1.. Plastidip is not as directional as you quoted.. Yes its different from paint with the way it settles but its still a spray and there is overspray...

2. To achieve plastidipping the full grill as you know, you have to change direction of your spray to achieve the hard spots.. Therefore your radiator will be full of overspray plastidip... Not very good guidance for anyone wanting to do this..!?

If you want to look up youtube and look at the makers of plastidips 'how to' there should always be some sort of cover behind your grill to stop overspray going onto your radiator...

So your 'how to' guidance thread is wrong and therefore instructing people who do it 'your way' incorrectly... That was just my original issue, but since you couldnt take that on the chin.. I thought id explain in more depth

So i think i'll leave that there... Been taken far too far anyway!

Plenty of experience of using plastidip.. So if my opinion is Billy big ******** to you then thanks for the compliment haha ;)

Okay so you avoided the question and then took me calling you billy big ******** as a compliment? Clearly you spend far to much time behind a computer or messing with your car to recognise basic human phrases. Don't worry though mister oracle I'm sure your right and I never said you weren't but that doesn't make me wrong :)

Also I clearly stated in my OP that this was my first time plastidipping. Just a tip but maybe you should send me the how to in your 1st response instead of going off on one about how its not a how to because it's not perfect. I'm open to critisims otherwise why would I have out this was my first go?

Yeah clearly I do eh!? I was obviously being sarcastic, so whos taking phrases the wrong way!

I wasnt being critical about your 1st time doing it.. I even said you done a fair job! Did I not!? But on forums to claim a 'how to' means to me that its 100% correctly done as its a guide for all to follow to do it properly! Look at all my previous comments and see how many threads I actually cristicise on!? 0.... I just took exception as to how you went about posting this thread and couldnt bite my lip this time sorry!!!

Again i'll state... That this was a fair attempt, but the way you are explaining it means that numerous people will be getting overspray on their radiators if they were to follow you... And again as you said it is a good guide and the majority of people wouldnt be able to tell the difference... I didnt wanna go down this road

I really can't be ***** to carry on with this AFAIK a how to guide is a guide on how to achieve the results posted in said how to. That's it end of discussion if this isn't perfect enough for you then don't use it!

P.s Ill add a little disclaimer for you so none can get confused into thinking this is suppose to be a perfect guide to. If that will make you happy this evening

N I think you need to tone down the sarcastic comments in future... Thats what set the the thing off if you read back! Grow up a little and take some critisism on the chin!

Great guide SamA3 you've done a good job mate, especially for a first attempt!

I'm very tempted to do this myself as I'm not keen on buying an RS6 grill for £200, to then hack it to pieces to make it fit my pre-facelift 8P S3! I'd keep the Audi rings and surround chrome but Plasti Dip the grill black.

How long/well has it lasted for you? Do you reckon it's worth using primer first?
