A3 2.0 (170) TDi Quattro - prop shaft doughnut

Hi guys, this is my first post on the site, been a lurker for a long time.

I have a 2008 plate Audi A3 2.0 TDi Quattro S-line, the 170 version. I have noticed recently that when I'm mainly in 5/6 gear and I accelerate (starting about 2.2k revs) I get a very obvious and quite loud vibration. It disappears higher up the rev range, probably towards 3k.

I've done a fair bit of research and I believe this is very often attributed to the quattro prop shaft "doughnut" bearings/damper, the rear one specifically in most cases. I've also read that Audi often advice customer they have to replace the whole prop shaft.

Basically to help me quickly sort the problem I was hoping someone would know the code for the front and rear bearings for my car? I've found codes for older plates and for the 140 varieties but want to ensure I buy the right part obviously!

Any help you guys can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Funnily enough my car, same as yours but 2010, has just been to Audi who have diagnosed the exact same fault. ( Identical symptoms to yours ) Thankfully where I got the car from gave me a good warranty. Audi want £1400 for the whole propshaft but the warranty company have sourced just the doughnut. Will be fitted by the Audi dealer later this week hopefully. I was planning to find out where the part came from in case it goes again in the future. I have noticed that someone on ebay is selling them now and ours is listed at £75. When the part comes in on Wednesday I'll find out more info about it.

I've been unable to locate the correct part on ebay unfortunately. There's parts calling themselves a "propshaft flexible joint" for around that price but I'm pretty sure that's not the right thing .

If you do happen to find out let me know please, would be helpful. I believe it's a pretty common problem with Quattro owners so I'm hoping someone with a 2008 or later model will be able to shed some light on the correct part number.

It is the joints that get cracks in them.

I thought the main problem was the rubber in the damper perishing causing vibration to become much more obvious? Below is a link to a similar part for a 2007 car, it was this I believed I needed. Unless the design of the shafts changed of course.

Yeh it is cracks in the rubber causing the shaft to spin slightly out of true or vibrate. I think the one I linked to was for the front actually. I'll find out what I can when I take the car in to be fixed.

Ok cool cheers. Can't believe how much of a faff about it is trying to get one from Audi haha. I've emailed a few places tonight about it, see if I can get anywhere.

Does anyone know if the 2008 part is any different to the 2007 version? Only reason I ask is because the site I linked specifies an age range of 2004-2007.

Well my cars been in for a full service etc today. I had bought a replacement damper for the rear, this was to be fitted at the same time. I took the car to my usual mechanic who's very trustworthy. They've had a look at my current dampers and say they can't see any splits/cracks and that the rubber hasn't perished from what they can tell..

I'm going to have a word with them when I pop back to pick it up later, but does anyone have any other ideas as to what might be causing me this vibration?

I don't get any steering wheel wobble, turbo whines etc and no knocking when turning. The sypmtons I had were so similiar to those described on the internet that I was convinced it must be the damper..

Get them to remove it and check it for stiffness on in/out movement between the two halves, it will be stiff which is what is causing the vibration. You can't tell visually alone.

I would change it anyway as it will be the problem if you are experiencing the vibration at the published points.

Sorry to bring this thread back to life, but where did you get the rear damper from? Mine is shot and audi want to sell me a new prop shaft for 1600 quid... Mine is a 2009 model and I thought that post 2007 models were different to those in the thread above?

Audi but you need to tell them a 2007 reg else they'll try to sell you a complete propshaft as you've found, they part is the same on both versions of the shaft. The part number is in post #5 so just get them to order that or from stoke audi.

The eBay one is the front one the stoke Audi parts link is the one u need.

I hope I'm allowed to put this on but we supply and keep in stock the correct part.
