The cheapest to maintain car you ever had?

Whether it was new or old what is the car that just seemed to look after it's self?
Mine was a 1.9td 306 estate I brought it cheap as a runaround 1 owner and 70k miles never needed anything spending on it outside brakes, Tyres etc. I had it 3 years when it got wrote off by an uninsured driver I reckon it would still be going now. Probably the cheapest most boring car I had but took me everywhere climbing I still miss it!

A mk2 Astra 1.3 , then sold it a year and a quarter later for £200 more than I bought it .

Mine was a 94 toyota landcruiser amazon 80 series, bought it in 2005 sold it in oct last year, in all that time apart from servicing NOTHING went wrong, also I sold it for what I paid for it, I do miss it and think I made a mistake selling it.

Also a mk2 astra, paid £300 for it, can't remember the mileage but it was real high, had it for about 18 months and added another 20k on the clock before the gearbox gave up, didn't spend a penny on maintainance, never even checked the oil on it.

I had a 96 civic with 1000k on it with original cam belt and clutch. Only ever replaced the slave cylinder which was 18 quid! It was serviced though. May I say all my german cars audi amd BMW have cose me a bloomin fortune. Oh amd I had a classic mini 16quid for a full tank of juice!

My old volvo v40 t4 had it 5 yrs all i did was service it. Had 145k on when we got rid last month for a more friendly honda jazz

It is odd my peugeot didn't have any history with it but never missed a beat it's been downhill since then! The minis I've had were pretty reliable and nice and cheap when something did break!

1000k? You sure about that? It covered a million miles?

Anyway, my Mk4 Golf 1.6 covered 180k on the original clutch and gearbox after which I had sold on. Quite impressive I think.

I wouldn't call a gearbox failure due to lack of maintenance 'looking after it's self'

Well with the amount of mileage it had on it it was going pretty well! Was never going to see another owner after me, I bought it so I could save for a better car after having my 106 written off. the bonnet was rusting away and the interior was crap, got £120 for scrap and was happy with that after 18 months of trouble free motoring. My a3 thankfully gets very well looked after, but costs a lot to do so.

Orion 1.4 LX had it about 5 years only changed one oil seal and one bulb. best car ever, drove it like i stole it everyday and was basically a work horse for my show car. lost the MOT and the road tax expired when i was on holiday and my mum ended up scrapping it for me.

The other half has an MG ZR (yes I know!) she has owned it for 5 years now. Headgasket went after a year. Its wanted for nothing bar a few exhaust sections, tyres, brakes.etc
The front brake discs are solid - so you can imagine how cheap they are.
It averages 10k a year, I carry out all the work and service every year.

Been wanting her to get something else for the past two years, the thing costs nothing to run, so im reluctant to get rid.

Not a car I directly own but the wifes Toyota Yaris has been extremely reliable. Its a 2005 1.4 diesel and apart from the usual service items and things like pads and discs the only thing I have had to replace is the front anti roll bar bushes and they never really failed, had an advisory on them through the MOT. And they only cost about £12.We have had it nearly 5 years and it's done 60K miles with us.
It's never done less than 60 mpg and only costs £30 a year to tax.
Her next car is likely to be a newer version of the same car.

Bought with 77k on it... Sold with 167k on it. replaced brakes and tyres!
Never serviced, Never had an oil change, Never had a cam belt change.

Its safe to say i was completely broke when i was young Great car though.

Honda Civic EJ4. The only thing it cost me was tax, test, insurance, servicing and fuel.

My MG used to break it's self out of spite.

My current A4. It gets driven hard and taken on track days and in the 100,000 miles I've done in it the only breakdowns have been.

Broken wiring to MAF - Brother towed me and we repaired the wiring - £0
Waterpump failed - £45 pump and an afternoon on my back

Everything else has been bog standard wear and tear or bits I've upgraded.
