8V S3 Tuning Thread

Ok so got the car back... The exhaust looks properly evil, defo sets the back of the car off nicely and looks very aggressive.

The exhaust sounds very deep when just cruising and comes alive when on boost with some loud cracks on gear changes. Does sound totally different to the milltek one.

The exhaust made 29hp over standard. I will be confirming this on statllers dyno at some point as this seems ALOT. Currently just have the cat-back fitted as they needed the 3ins downpipe as a jig as they only have one at the min. But not fussed as there doing us a titanium exhaust shortly once they have finished developing the electronic valve for the cat back.

Pics to follow tomoz and a vid will be on there website soon!

Come on, where's the pics?! :D

Gee funk can you do a vid with launch control

And also one of the speedo with launch to see how quick it rly goes, as there's nothing like watching a speedo whip round with crazy power

Scorpion have the other boost operated valves but this is the first with electronic valves, so its taking a bit of time.

When finished the exhaust should be Titanium valved and resonated with decat.

The gearbox can handle 400hp comfortably and can hold 500hp with HPA's stage 3 software but the durability of the clutchpacks cant be quantified. It says this in the link I posted.

Mine made 301hp and 282ftlbs on statllers dyno.

Ill sort some pics asap

Not HP that is important with gearboxes, it's all about TQ. The 6 speed DSG in the GTI Edition 30 can take 500Nm with an acute curve so 5 years more advanced S3 should be good for a fair bit more than that.

The gearbox is sound im not worried about that at all. Hurdy ran 500ftlbs with nitrous through his on his ed30

Absolutely right.

The accepted torque limit on the DSG after software mapping seems to be around 440+ lbs.

How much more over 440lbs it will take before the clutch pack begins to slip also seems a bit variable, but both HPA and SSP make aftermarket clutch packs to allow a higher torque limit.

Don't get the idea that the thing is unbreakable....it isn't,and the bearings and transfer case are also potential weak spots with very high torque applications.

Wasn't suggesting its unbreakable, but for how far im taking this car, I wont be worrying.

Theres very few planning on putting over 440ftlbs through the box, that would also probably require an aftermarket turbo setup and that's way in the distance yet I would of thought.

Any pics of your exhaust yet Rob? I want to see how evil it looks!!

Hi Rob...it was just the comment about the box being sound and Hurdy having put 500lbs through his.

Put another way,the internals may cope with that,or they may not......at that level it's about how you treat the transmission, and how much you set aside for disasters.

440lbs would easily take you into a big turbo conversion, and the problem there is going to be the ECU,and not just the hardware.

Good vid mate, I like it on the rollers but sounds strange on the road :uhm:

The gear changes sound mental on the rollers!

The Milltek sounds a lot more of a hollow howl in my opinion, like its 6cyl or something. It sounds epic in real life.

Not sure I can explain what I mean but hollow could describe it right enough, not sure about sounding like a 6 cyl but again I would need to hear it in the flesh before parting with my hard earned as I really don't like the sound of it in the video.
I have had several Millteks over the years and I've been looking forward to hearing yours but this may sound weird but it sounds like it's just a straight pipe bolted onto the turbo with nothing inbetween!! I need to hear it properly I think

It doesn't sound too dissimilar to the E46 M3 I had with the howl. I prefer that sound.
It's settled down now from when that video was done, it was only the day after it was finished. Also it's a turbo back with sports cat and non resonated so effectively a racing system.
Everyone is entitled to their opinions and I'm sure there'll be loads of other options soon if you don't like the Milltek.

Yeh your right and the fact that it's a full system might be the problem for me as I normally just go for cat back systems and that might sound totally different, but as long as you like it that's all that matters I guess seen as it's on your car!! Hope your enjoying it mate didn't mean to slate your new toy!!

Yeah I know mate no worries. A resonated might be a bit better for some people. I don't do any miles hardly tho so doesn't bother me plus I wanted maximum power output from it when working with Shark as they're also using it as a development car!

Well be taking our own DSG S3 and GNJs Manual to Motoscope his next weekend to compare the figures achieved recently when their car was used by Forge to developed the FMIC, and also take the opportunity to tweak the software to suit the hardware upgrades made.

I also intend to run our new S3 with and without the box to see what kind of results were seeing on our own car before adding any hardware upgrades ...

can anyone (who has the S3 already) tell me what size of brakes are on the rear please? (disc size and pots per caliper) Is it 4 pots on the front?

where is the best place to get uprated lines/discs/pads?

cheers

Sorry to bump this up. I'm debating pulling the trigger on one of these Shark boxes. Anyone been running one for a while now? How's it all going?

I've never used a piggyback tune before. I've always in the past gone with a flash (I mean always haha...every car I've ever owned!) so I'm a bit hesitant.

I want more power for sure. Heck, I want a boatload of more power! But not sure on these things.

Have also been in contact with Milltek who have mentioned that they start distributing their new S3 TBE system as of next week. I reached out to Supersprint as well. They haven't responded to me at all. It's been over a week. Either way, I'm going resonated. But given that Akrapovic have a system for the new GTI, I may hold out to see if they release a system for the S3. In talking to them, however, they've mentioned they have no plans to do so.

Appreciate any info!

If you read some earlier posts on this thread you'll know I've been running turbo back non res Milltek and Shark stage 2 tuning box for a few weeks. As the 2 have been developed together they obviously compliment each other. No idea what another exhaust system would be like with the tuning box but I'd speak to Shark about it. It has completely transformed what was already a good car into an epic car!

Obviously a flash map would be a lot better as it's more configurable, but while it can't be done at the mo a tuning box is a good choice. +60bhp is serious extra power for these 2 upgrades.

I don't own a vbox so can't really measure accurate times. I'd guess at 4.5secs to 60mph tho and around 10secs to 100mph. To be honest these aren't figures I'm interested in, it's all about 500Nm of midrange torque...

I don't understand why no one of the UK tuners is able to do a tuning via OBD. Somoneit racing, OCT Tuning and in a few weeks APR is able to tune via OBD...

My pref is ODB tuning to be honest. I've been hearing that APR is close to releasing a tune, but I've been hearing that for over a month now.

Siemonit/OCT don't help me haha. I'm in Australia, and unless I physically remove my ECU and mail it to them (which there is no way in hell I am doing), they can't help me.

I'm waiting for this

You'll be waiting longer than a few weeks.

It doesn't really matter too much on the make of the exhaust aslong as it's 3inch and not been done by half wits you won't see much difference I don't think.

I also herd miltek's exhaust is gonna be around £1900 aswell... Bit steep.

You'll be waiting longer than a few weeks.

I'll happily wait as long as it takes because APR will supply the best remap solution and it will be via OBDII. The current tuning box solutions that are available are just a temporary workaround that have been commercialised.

I bet its gonna be 6-12 months untill the big players get a OBD map sorted.

Chuffed to bits with my MTM box.

Yes a 'temporary workaround' that gives you +40bhp isn't too shabby in my opinion.

Not when you could get 60-70 bhp for, I expect, less money just by waiting it out.
