No s3 on top gear!

It has not been on channel for a while now.

No idea why they dropped it.

Yeah on Sky Discovery.

I've only got access to Freeview freesat and a PC tonight so think I'm stuffed.

Last week was Noble M600 vs. Porker Turbo S vs. Nissan GTR; then McLaren at the end and a bit of Mini Cooper Works (Team test) in the middle.

It's a show about cars, most people probably wouldn't get it ;-)

Totally agree.

The scene where Clarkson said in a rear wheel drive car you can do this.
And he gets the back end out going round the corner in the Bimmer.
Erm yeah that may be fine for hooning around on track, but for driving on roads (in all weather conditions) I will stick with the much more safe and stable 4 wheel drive thank you ... even front wheel drive !

Totally reminded my why I will not buy another rear wheel drive car.
Fine for totally dry warm days, but not for me now having sampled quattro !

Rear wheel drive is far better and more fun in the dry.
My garage queen will likely always be RWD as it is so much more involving to drive. My daily will always be AWD.
Running RWD as a daily will possibly sour the experience, I've tried twice and it's okay until the snow and ice hits.

Ahh cool - this is the episode I found after a search on the planner :)

[Thread hijack] Snake, out of interest do you know what the drive split is in the latest S5 - e.g. 50/50 front to rear, 40/60(F/R) ????? [/back on topic - apologies]

I have definitely read this somewhere but can't remember where and can't lay my hands on it right now.
It is not listed in the brochure.
BUT ... I do remember it being biased to the rears and not 50/50

Update ...

Found it :)

It is listed in the on line details of the S5 ...

quattro < S5 Coupé < A5 < Models < Audi

S5 with quattro

In the S5, the power to the front and back wheels is split in a 40:60 ratio – giving the car a sporty, rear-focused driving style that guarantees maximum agility and driving enjoyment

I don't disagree with that at all.
I did run a BMW 330i m sport in 2006/7 and it was an excellent car with a superb straight six engine and ultra slick gearbox.
If I had 2 cars I would love a RWD car for the weekend or summer.
Having sampled quattro it would be hard to give it up - certainly for a daily all year drive car.

You'll be close to getting banned again Warren hi jacking S3 threads but TTBOMK the S5 is rear 60/40 bias ..... But having driven many and owned 2 5s am still well and truly in love with the new S3. Rethink eh??

They do like Audi's, in particular the RS3, RS4, RS6 and they just love the R8.

If you don't like TG, then you have an off button or change the channel, you don't have to sit and watch it all the way through then moan about it.

The GTI was picked for a specific reason, to compare the rear wheel drive BMW with a front wheel drive car, it would not have served their purpose to have had an all wheel drive car, like the Golf R or S3 (even though it's only part time all wheel drive). The GTI is not a direct competitor for the 135i. Particularly on cost or power output.

And that's why I didn't go for a BMW! Jumping out at 120 and sliding backwards for 1/4 mile. That would have been interesting (carnage) on a road! No thanks I'll stick with the Quattro :kissmyrings:

To be fair, he would have had ESP off, so unless you were doing 120 with ESP off, you probably wouldn't have had that misfortune!!

Just watched last night's Top Gear & have to say, I'd rather they skipped the S3 than include it and then lambaste it like he did the Beeeeemer! It makes that Chris whats-his-face's praise of it look all the more biased. lol

Funny enough, my Nephew had a 116i he was planning to sell, a few weeks ago he took it out for one last spin in the rain ...and binned it on the M1. He aquaplaned (just like Jezza, but at a road legal speed) into the central reservation and wrote it off.

A short wheelbase & rear wheel drive do not make for a stable combination.

I do find quite a lot of BMWs backwards or up side down (or both) in ditches, not far from the exits of roundabouts usually. Can't be a good sign.

I have a new F30 320d company car and it has 135bhp less than the M 135i but it's seems to lose traction very easily. The stability control light flashes a lot in this weather. In fact round fast-ish roundabouts you can feel the car go very "floaty" and I personally find it quite un-nerving. The ultimate driving machine it ain't.

I wasn't surprised JC lost it in those conditions knowing how the new bummer stuff drives.

Don't want to burst some people's bubble but i do hope you realise that everything in Top Gear is staged and this crash of his in the beemer is no exception.

Much of it is staged, but I don't think that was. The cameras shot as he went off was inside the cabin. If it was staged I'd have expected an external shot with a stunt driver.

I don't think he'd choose to risk his own life to prove a point, i still think it's staged.

Hence my comment that if it was planned, he wouldn't have been doing the driving. He'd have been replaced by a stunt driver.

Or he was filmed inside the cabin in a controlled crash for a few minutes of filming... You believe what you want to believe.

Hi guys,

I have been an avid fan of all things motoring since I can remember, I despise Clarkson and agree with the fact that Top Gear is an entertainment programme for the masses rather than anything informative about cars. From the reviews online that I have seen, the M135i has been described as completely competent as a road car (atleast) and that the Golf is approaching that level.

Apologies, I am new to the forum (as you can see from my number of posts) but I need some guidance. Bexley Audi is absorbing my A3 1.8T SB due to a raft of issues since owning the vehicle from new in May 2013. I am in the process of upgrading to an S3 and the "preferential" deal offered by dealership is £3,000 off the list of the car. Is this enough? What are we typically seeing as discounts. The preferential deal is being given as a result of the issues I have experienced since purchasing my A3. I get the feeling I could get £3k off the car if I walked in from the street.

Apologies if this is a thread elsewhere, and if so please do link me. This is something that is going down imminently so your assistance in this regard would be really appreciated.

Many Thanks.

Mani

I doubt they could get the realism by staging that off - the grass flying up past the window, Jezza's colour change - he went pale & quiet.

still, as you say - you believe what you want.

Thanks guys, I just feel its not very "preferential" if I am getting £3k which is what could be obtained if I walked in as a new customer looking for an S3. I need to leverage more I think. Certainly looking online sites that are providing cars at a discount (see below link for example) I feel like they could do more.

Place your enquiry with Orangewheels

Thank you BattleKrapz and PilotAudi, assistance appreciated! :)

Audi UK have also said they will help me out with a deal also by way of compensation for the duff A3 I have (ECU melt, replaced entire DSG unit and using my fuel in the car (155 mile range - car given back with less than 10 miles range post work completed) and receiving awful customer service generally)

Thanks again both!

Open airfield, no obstructions, wet ground... hardly risking his life to stage that.

That's the one bit about the S5 where it trumps the S3 in how the two cars drive and the thing that I miss from the S5.

If the S3 Quattro was that from the S5 it would be perfectly set up.
The S3's front bias is detrimental, especially without a decent diff.

Hmmm very interesting - sounds like otherwise though the S3 is working out well for you.

Sounds like our search for the perfect Audi continues then :)

I was set on an RS3 next time round but having now seein pictures and specs on the new TTS, I could be tempted back into one.

I just like having the practicality and option to use back seats again with the 5 and and a 3 would give me that too, the TT would not.

Oh well, nice problems to have eh :)

It was this particular area of the S5's talent that sold it for me, with sports diff it's disarmingly agile for it's size. The S3 is a brilliant car and I'd wanted one for as long as I knew they were due out, but on the day the outcome was an unexpected one. Mix of 3.0T and Quattro / sports diff was the tipping factor.

Yeah now I think about it, you can feel the surge from the rear wheels.
Reminiscent to the momentum I had from the BMW back in the day.
You will love the S5 mate I have no doubt about that and will be good for you to have a car other than an S3 seeing as you had two already back to back.
I had two TT's back to back and I was ready for something different (and use of rear seats).
I could have gone S3 too but very happy with the 5 and with what you have planned, your 5 will be on another planet

I don't think there is one, certainly not for me.
Had a weekend with the new RS4 and didn't find that particularly good either (although fantastic engine).
I will have one more attempt with a "sporty" Audi at some point in the future and that will be the R8 (8 or 10 cylinder depending on budget at the time), but that's for the future.

Wish I could afford an RS4 never mind an R8! I'll just stick to my A3! pushing to try and get an S3 next time, couldnt afford the RS3 which will be coming out soon.

Clarkson always likes a Golfs.
It was very, very similar to a 135 v R32 feature years ago. Exact same same criticism of BMW (boot space, rear legroom etc). Mirror image review....... Just 10 has years later.
And to dismiss the AMG A45 as costing 47k - so therefore irrelevant?? When I was looking to buy, they cost about 38k..... with plenty of standard kit.
Then not including an S3, Golf R.
And if I remember that Astra VXR won last year's hot hatch feature.

Ah well. Probably better the S3 didn't feature. He would have made a single benign comment about it and dismissed it like the AMG.

To be honest, that review would have made me favour the BMW over the GTi.

I looked at the a45 but it wont cost £38K as if you add paint, basic tech like sat nav and a couple of other features then you will struggle to get it under £45K

Well many don't rate Clarkson . Pompous Tory **** IMHO . Call me old but what happened to proper car programmes rather than the current Top Gear inane rubbish.

For Mr Eight A definition - an ultraconservative or reactionary

better being a tory t**t than a miserable old labour loser
