What that all about? They had all the comparable hatchbacks but no s3.

Ridiculous! No idea why they didn't test it as it's a direct competitor to the M135i! I'd say the Golf is a competitor to the Megane and Astra VXR. Clarkson does bum the Golf GTi.

I was also wondering but i think it's because they hate Audis... Remember they call us *****?

I noticed that too . I was waiting for the S3 to make an appearance and blow the other two hatches away!
Did they review it on the previous series?

Indeed, whilst generally speaking I like Top Gear they like to say that Audi drivers are the new BMW drivers. Funny how since I've become an Audi driver I've noticed that when cars tailgate me, cut me up etc. they are very often BMWs...

Again I don't see why no S3, if they had the Golf it should be the R.

It would have been interesting to see what the drag race would have been like with the S3 and how fast the Stig could put it round their circuit!

Hahha was all over this. Even me 9yr lad asked “dad where is the audi?” typical topgear always favoring the golf gti!!!!

Saves the S3 from being rated behind the Golf GTi, which is what would have happened.

Funny that i always find it's a berk in a merc!

I said exactly the same to my Mrs about no S3. She just rolled her eyes. Haha.

Clarkson always likes a Golfs.
It was very, very similar to a 135 v R32 feature years ago. Exact same same criticism of BMW (boot space, rear legroom etc). Mirror image review....... Just 10 has years later.
And to dismiss the AMG A45 as costing 47k - so therefore irrelevant?? When I was looking to buy, they cost about 38k..... with plenty of standard kit.
Then not including an S3, Golf R.
And if I remember that Astra VXR won last year's hot hatch feature.

Ah well. Probably better the S3 didn't feature. He would have made a single benign comment about it and dismissed it like the AMG.

To be honest, that review would have made me favour the BMW over the GTi.

Well 5th Gear is back tonight 8pm on Discovery perhaps they may feature an unbiased feature on hot hatches with the inclusion of the S3?

Probably will - I remember they have done RWD vs 4WD before where they tested a v6 TT Quattro vs something else (can't remember what).

Tiff will love the BMW but Jason will get the most out of an S3 for sure on a hot lap

Yup, they hate Audi as a brand but as none of them drive one they have no common interest

Notice how Clarkson regularly plugs the fact he drove his Mercedes down, and they even showed him driving it this week.

A raft of wonderful hot hatches out there at the moment and what did we really learn about any of them last night. FA.

That's why Im glad 5th gear is back. Top Gear is MoR light entertainment show, it will be the exception when you find out anything useful about cars. They are 3 old boys living out their own dreams under the shroud of a common interest in cars. Bet they're having a ball.

Interesting as I remember Hammond wrote an article in a newspaper comparing the new s3 to an old Ferrari. He loved it!

From memory Clarkson doesn't rate the s3 at all.

Well many don't rate Clarkson . Pompous Tory **** IMHO . Call me old but what happened to proper car programmes rather than the current Top Gear inane rubbish.

For Mr Eight A definition - an ultraconservative or reactionary

And yet again, you introduce your political views into a thread.

Just can't help yourself, can you!

edit for PilotAudi: It won't wash. For a start you used a capital T. Secondly, in the context above you used it as a pejorative. Thirdly, you have previous.

Fifth gear, new series starts tonight.

Yeah I just noticed this whilst flicking through the TV guide last night.
it is not very well advertised, particularly hidden away on Discovery.
Looking forward to it anyway.

As for Top Gear last night ......

jeeeeeeeeees, the moment Clarkson had in that BMW was very scary.
He is lucky it didn't roll.
Wonder how many sales that cost BMW :)

I know my little session pushing on yesterday in a very wet north wales would have been scary in a m135i. High power wet RWD fun is great if you are Tiff but not if you are an average joe like me!

For me Top Gear is a comedy show rather than some serious car show. With some political statements thrown in (clarkson is close to the likes of Cameron and Brooks, that's not a secret).

but I still like watching it for the shear entertainment value. In fact, I even watch the repeats.

The show is more about them than the cars they attempt to review ,the show is like Last of the Summer Wine with a few cars thrown in just to class it as a motoring programme.:jester:

Totally agree.

The scene where Clarkson said in a rear wheel drive car you can do this.
And he gets the back end out going round the corner in the Bimmer.
Erm yeah that may be fine for hooning around on track, but for driving on roads (in all weather conditions) I will stick with the much more safe and stable 4 wheel drive thank you ... even front wheel drive !

Totally reminded my why I will not buy another rear wheel drive car.
Fine for totally dry warm days, but not for me now having sampled quattro !

The S3 was an obvious omission, but Top Gear hardly ever mention Audi, so I wasn't surprised. The show is entertainment, and not to be taken at all seriously. I used to be a daily cyclist and I still laughed at the anti-cycling piece last night.

Fifth gear is much better for car reviews, but still has an element of entertainment to it. I'd also be wary of listening to Tiff, as he has far more driving talent than me.

The OP made the mistake of thinking Top Gear is a serious car program. I'm glad it wasn't mentioned, keep the morons who take TG seriously away from the brand :p

They used to like Audis a long time ago, then switched their 'alliance' to BMWs... I wonder if there was some change in sponsorship of the TG production company at the time :p After all, they always put electric cars down and make up problems with them, and they are sponsored by Shell oil... not dodgy at all, oh no.

Top Gear reached its peak when they did the space shuttle, and even that had some obviously staged gags and issues (The thing never would have flown, I reckon they made it not release on purpose, knowing it didn't stand a chance).

It's been downhill from there basically.

They must have limits on how many cars they can compare.

And who will let them test their vehicles, some manufacturers, like Audi, might not have agreed...

I must be bottom of the pile of Clarkson et al dislikes, cycle everywhere, drive an Audi , and tow an Eriba puck 230 gt (sort of a caravan).

I wasnt to please either when I didn't see the Audi on Top Gear!

I was waiting for it to be announced but never came!

The only time I have ever seen them give good comments on a Audi was the R8 but even then they chose the Ferrari as the car the would prefer to own even though it did loose every challenge to Audi lol
