I've noticed that there are a lot more views and posts and threads about the A3 class than all the others combined, it seems to be the most popular Audi topic but why? Why did the owners pick an Audi instead of a Golf which is not only cheaper, but better handling, roomier and ( not including the RS3) faster?
Are most A3 owners young (under 30) males so like the idea of owning an Audi more appealing than a VW?
Is the A3 series more tunable?
Or is it the image of young spotty lads pimping the *** of the golfs that puts people of?
mmm?

Well for the S3, its 200+ bhp as standard, recaros, xenons, quattro, the list goes on.

Whats the equivalent out there ??

I didnt think there was one really, with the Golf, the only similar car of that spec would have been the Anniversary Golf or the R32, the R32 was out of the question for me as its a 3.2 V6, which wasnt great on fuel for me and the Anniversary, didnt have creature comforts.

I did look at the BM 3 series coupe at the time I went to look at the S3, but they were so underspecced and to get one of the same spec, I was looking to pay a whole lot more.

So there you go :)

The only decent hatchback VAG car at the time (2005),I had been driving a V6 so wanted different from that so no R32.
The flared arches, the stance and the interior, not to mention the very tuneable 1.8t engine made it the ideal package.
Now and again when returning to the parked Ess,I would see it and think woooh look at that then realise its my ride.
Now I drive a boring auto box Golf with no pimped out bits.

Remind me which golf is faster than an S3?

The GTi golf uses the same engine as an A3 2.0TFSI. Ive had both a golf & and the Audi wins hands down on refinement and class. My golf was a workhorse. (it wasnt a Gti) The only golf that tends to divide opinion is the ED30 GTi (ive not heard many mention the R which is effectivly an S3) due to it having the K04 turbo (same as an S3) But finding a decent ED30 is hard work.

As others have said, for a premium badged fast ~5sec's 0 to 60 250-300BHP AWD car there isnt that much to choose from, and even a standard specced S3 is pretty well sorted.

I sold my Clio200 for something that saved me finance payments. For the money i was looking at spending, the S3 and the 330ci were the ones that caught my eye. The beemers are well specced and look good but im a hatch kinda guy. Love the noggy blue with the blue interior....much nicer place to be than the mk4 golf tdi i was also considering!!

However, will the S3 turn into more of a money pit than the clio? Ive already spent over a months finance payment on it with a clutch bill coming also!

I take it your question is audi-sport specific right? This forum, whilst covering anything Audi related, has more users that own A3/S3/A4/S4 and it's why those two model specific forums are the busiest! Of course the A3/S3 sold more in numbers I presume, so there are more about, it's only natural there are more threads and questions for this range/model.

Regarding info on S/RS models, I think Audi owners have other options with more info on them on the internet.

Because Audi sounds so much better than Volkswagen, skoda or Seat. Obviously.

And I'm 21, my a3's *** also isn't "pimped" as you say, maybe OEM+?

Not really, Audi is one of the most popular out there. The quality is better than any other affordable alternative. Not to mention safe, and built like a tank.

So it's not badge snobbery?

Is this a troll thread? Other users have already gave you valid reasons to your original post and you reply asking if its brand snobbery? ...

Edit: Ive re read your original post and I really dont like the tone of it at all.

I've got a Mk5 golf, and the build quality ****** awful compared to the Audi. It's going at the end of the week thank god.

I bought my car just after the golf got updated, and just before the A3 did. So actually there was a big discount on the Black Edition and very little difference in the price. I've got a suspicion the A3 actually worked out cheaper once I added Quattro, as 4Motion or whatever it's called seemed to carry a bigger premium on the Golf, and the Golf wasn't being discounted much being new while I got nearly 15% off List on the A3, even after the Black Edition pack being discounted.

The A3's interior is definitely better quality and more refined, so for roughly the same money (certainly not enough to notice, on a relatively expensive car either way) I got essentially a better looking, top spec Golf with a more prestigious badge. The fact I liked the A3's design more than the Golf at the time helped: right now I'd probably go for the newest Golf over the newest A3 on looks alone.

Of course there's a bit of badge snobbery - but it's not just about the neighbours: Audi depreciation is better than VW's. If I sold my A3 now, I'd get more of my money back. There's little doubt that the quality of the Audi is better, and overall I've found that the dealerships are much better. The fact that I've got an Audi out of it wasn't the main point, but I'm not going to complain.

Why settle for a girl when you can have her slightly more attractive sister, even if you have to take her on a more expensive date first? And besides, why is it Badge snobbery when I buy a better car than someone else, but not if they have a more expensive house than me? Or own a horse? Or are going to Jamaica on holiday while I go to Pontins?

Can we not just all buy the things we want with our own money without worrying what everyone else is doing with theirs?

Now get out of my way, peasants, I've got my DRLs on and more torques than you.

i have a 2.0 ltr tdi as a daily.if i bought a s3 in the same colour etc none of my neighbours would ever know ive changed the car.imo a car that is well made but not a car that turns heads

It's all down to cost and quality. Pay that bit more for an a3/s3 but you get a great car.
Why settle for a cigar when you can smoke a cohiba

Right then, firstly my question wasn't a ' Troll ' , a word I hear my kids use and I don't like, secondly, I wanted to know why the A3/S3 was so popular and people chose it over a Golf. I can appreciate what people are saying as I've recently joined the Audi fraternity with an A4, the quality is great, it makes me feel great and there is nothing else like it in the VAG group.
A couple of months ago, a friend of mine picked up a new mk7 golf and I thought it was brilliant inside and to drive, it cost him over £27,000 and that's when it got me thinking, why pay more for an Audi?
So there you have it, not a Troll, ogre, hobbit or tooth fairy, but a genuine question.

p.s. Audi = The tits

You have answered your own question in your reply

You just need to ask yourself why you went for an Audi over a VW/Skoda/Seat in the first place. So why did you?

One of my main reasons was there was no equivalent VAG car I could buy at the time some 6 years ago....and there's still not much to directly replace it with....plus you can only get nogaro blue on an Audi really :)

The only VAG cars that were equivalents were the EOS or Golf convertible and neither looked as good or felt as good to drive as the A4 Cab.
You know what, I get it now, I just wanted to know why the A3 is so popular when Autocar etc say to save your money and get a golf or Skoda, now I know.
I didn't want to offend but I probably did, sorry.

That proves my point entirely, then... I paid £27k for my A3 Black Edition Quattro with all the trimmings. My car is almost the top spec A3 possible short of the S3/RS3. (I think I didn't tick 2 options: Heated rear seats and the sunroof)

So my question to you: Why pay more for a Golf? ;-)
