I have been driving an Audi for 10 years now and really do like the build and reliability so when it came to car change time I picked up another Audi A4 but this time I have gone for my first Tdi, apart from it driving completely differently im not sure im getting the power I should be so I have a few questions ...

1 How do I know weather I am getting what I should be ?
2 What improvements can I make without major surgery ?
3 Will a remap affect engine life span ?
4 Will Audi see the a remap when it goes in for a service ?
5 Are any of the things that are done as part of a remap ie DPF Delete etc an MOT requirement ?

Hi Anthony566,

I’ve just seen your post. We offer a full custom in-house remap service along with a digital multi-channel tuning box for your vehicle. I appreciate you left your post a while ago but just in case you are still looking for some advice, here are some answers to your questions –

1 How do I know weather I am getting what I should be?

Every car is different and it’s common for cars to produce more or less power than quoted. The most accurate way to measure this is to arrange for your vehicle to be tested on a dyno. There are companies around that this will do this and the cost may be around £60 for a full report. However, I appreciate this is not necessarily an ideal solution.

There should be a sticker in the boot (spare wheel well) that will confirm the power and kw rating of your vehicle or there may be a label in your service book.

2 What improvements can I make without major surgery ?

There’s lots you can do with your vehicle to improve its power, torque and fuel economy.
You’ve mentioned a remap. Your vehicle has a Bosch EDC17 Tri-core ECU which will require you to have the ECU removed and opened. It can be done but it is an invasive change and will be timely, more costly and is not adjustable.

Alternatively, you could obviously consider a tuning system. For instance we provide a CRTD2® TWIN Channel Diesel Tuning Box for your vehicle. They are custom-mapped to fit our customers’ specific requirements and can easily be re-programmed for future vehicles.

Another option you could consider is complementing a remap or tuning box with a performance panel air filter such as Pipercross or K&N.

3 Will a remap affect engine life span ?

A re-map from a reputable tuner will not affect your engine life span and will work within the manufactures tolerance on engine components.

4 Will Audi see the a remap when it goes in for a service ?

If the vehicle goes back to Audi, they may see the file and this may affect any warranty that you have on the car. Also, if they carry out a software update, this could cause the car to go back to its standard settings, causing you to have to go through the remap process again and will cost you more money to put your modified file back on.

A tuning box on the other hand is traceless and can be easily installed and removed by you personally.

5 Are any of the things that are done as part of a remap ie DPF Delete etc an MOT requirement?

As ElliotB has mentioned, a DPF delete could cause an MOT failure. If you decided to go for the tuning box option, clearly your DPF would stay intact. A tuning box will never make any permanent changes and will work in conjunction with the engine.

We are always happy to help with any questions you may have with regards to tuning. Please feel free to give us a call on 01245 924 400 or if you are ever local to us and wish to try out a tuning system, you are welcome to drop into our office for a free trial and a chat.

Regards,

Steve

Question for TDI-Tunning: Why are you so unwilling to provide any type of manuals to the boxes you sell prior to purchase?

"Thanks for your prompt reply. Although we don’t disclose our instruction manual prior purchase, I have attached a document to help you locate the sensor on your engine which will enable to see how easy is the fitting."

No amount of begging helped

Why?

what are you hoping to get from the manual Elliot ?

How easy is it to adjust various parameters etc.
So I instead went for a different box, see a thread nearby.

Haha...so now I got an email from you guys :) Very quick

Well on the DTUK box I tested ( that you linked ) at the weekend ( as it took a few weeks for me to get there ) they hold 4 maps that you can change on the box and there was a big improvement and you could feel the difference between the maps depending on what you are looking to get from the car :)

I have DTUK box :) I'm experimenting with others now. You might have seen my video where I accelerate to 60 in about 6 seconds using DTUK box. I think it was set to 3+2 at the time

I haven't seen the video ... ill go have a look at it now :)

Elliot, that's a little odd and a little worrying. As I just bought the twin channel option from TDI, goes on the car tomorrow. When opened up, looks incredibly similar to what you bought from TDUK, with the jumper that you can move either way. The manual seems informative enough of what the positions do, really odd he never sent you it.

I can't even think of a reasonable motive for not providing me with the documentation.

Hi BigGreg and ElliotB, unfortunately we have recently had to deal with a couple of cases where our images and technical information have been taken by competitors who have attempted to pass it off as their own. With this in mind we have tried to minimise this happening again but can appreciate your concerns.

We are still very happy to answer any technical questions from potential and current customers here on the forum or by phone on (01245) 924400

Your competitors could simply purchase one device if they wanted to. And to add my email was sent from my work address which ends with @ubs.com

DTUK don't seem to have that issue. They have all their manuals together with photos of the device on their website. They even have dyno graphs!

It is very common that manufacturers of various hardware have the manuals readily available on their websites.

Speaking to someone on the phone is very different from reading documentation to begin with

Hi Elliot, yes our competitors could do that, and we know that they have done that.

It is not an ideal measure to stop less reputable sources of tuning products from passing off our property as their own work, but, we have invested time and money in creating images and technical information and have needed to do something. We are looking at ways of improving this situation.

Your argument just doesn't make any sense. I know you sell a decent piece of hardware, but your practises are a "little" strange

Elliott if you're bored this weekend feel free to pop up north as we're taking 2 new S3s as well as the octavia back to the dyno..

I was hoping Anthony was free so we could see how well the recent software updates to the 2.0 177ps fair on the dyno but he's not available..

As part of our continued development program, TDI Tuning regularly undertakes testing sessions at a number of non-affiliated dyno centres in order to constantly improve and measure the outputs produced by our tuning boxes.

We thought you would be interested to see some of this occurring and have recently dyno’ed both a 170PS Audi TT Quattro and a Euro 6 184PS Golf GTD DSG.

The full write up and results can be found on our blog, but we also produced a video on the TT for you to watch which includes the before and after graphs to show how power and torque has increased.
