Remapped 2.0 tdi vs remapped 320d?

Recently was having a debate with a colleague about whether a remapped 2.0 tdi will be faster than a remapped 320d e90.

Bhp of audi a3 ~ 180bhp

Bhp of Bmw 320d ~205/210hp

So who'd be quicker in the real world?

Not a lot in it I'd say, skill of the driver would outweigh the performance differences.

Lets say in most situations its going to be dry. Traffic light drag races would be easier in the bm I suppose since its RWD so easier to put power down?

Depends on the torque of both really. More bhp doesn't always mean it's quicker.
Why not put a audi 2.0tdi 170 mapped against the Beemer to make it more interesting

I had a little race with with an 07 320 BMW. I don't think it was mapped iv got an audi a3 sline 140 2007 but mine has Been stage 1 remapped pulling 175-180 bhp i Managed to pull away was quiet happy
I had only got the remap that day too so I was very impressed

If it was on the quarter mile I would put money on the BMW for the better start. Otherwise there probably wouldn't be much in it .

My standard TDI 140 with DSG pulls away from a standard E46 320cd 150bhp with a turbo back but no remap

I've been an Audi man for quite some time now, but a remapped 320d would have it: even standard the 177bhp in the newer BMW diesels are quite superb!

I think it'd have to be one of the newer 170 CR engines that would really take it to the BMW 320d. Off-topic but a re-remapped 123d is out of this world: if only it wasn't so odd looking!

The BMW 2.0TD isn't as punchy as the PD engine and feels less responsive because of this. They never "feel" quick, all of them feel the same on throttle, from 118bhp throuhg 163 to 177bhp that I've driven. Smoother and refined but lacks the kick of the PD engine. That said this is just feel, so might not translate on the road as 177bhp is 177bhp... But I do prefer the 170 engine over a stock BMW 2.0D [for power delivery].

The only 4cy BMW diesel I've driven I like for response and power is the 123d, it was remapped though but very quick!

I had a 2005 320d 163bhp remapped to around 200bhp... it wasn't about the bhp though, the torque was the better mention, especially with the rear wheel drive! I have a 2008 S3 remapped to around 310bhp, really fast car but now looking to go back to bmw after only 18 months!!

Bought an astra 1.9 cdti 150 sri with sports button and its miles faster than the a3. Picks up more freely from lower revs and much less tractor like engine. The old PD engines were soo rough cant believe the difference between common rail and PD.

Yea, that Vauxhall TDI engine isn't bad at all, it revs pretty well and yes, the VAG PD TDI was well behind on NVH. The new CR really addresses many of the noisy issues with the old PD though.

They go well right up until the turbo, EGR, DPF, gearbox etc etc fails!!! Terrible build quality

I don't think they have DPFs but the rest of the stuff turbo, ergs, clutch's all common faults on diesels these days. I would agree on the build quality still not up there with their german rivals but for a overall package they pack a good punch. I was sick of the PD engines and their tractor like characteristics. The CR engines are a massive improvement however and I wouldn't hesitate to buy one in an instance.

Some do, some don't have DPF's. It was pretty much luck of the draw

The concrete mixer noise is one of the least desirable aspects of my A3. The 170 is generally a touch quieter than the 140 too, but it is still noisy in urban driving, especially setting off and in lower gears. It's strange why it gets so noisy under load where most TDs I have driven don't.
