Some extraordinary memories there. The first two, strictly speaking, belonged to my mum, but I drove them far more than she ever did. I learned to drive in the Viva and, for a brief period, took it to university with me in Edinburgh. The little Sunbeam had a tiny little 875cc engine, but it was all-alloy, overhead cam (still quite rare at the time) and revved to about 8000rpm. It wa also mounted at the back, setting the car up as a mini 911. The Opel was the first car I can genuinely say was mine.
The Fiesta was a massive error of judgement (it was bought in a very hot summer because it had sunroof, I seem to recall) that lasted only three months before I discovered the full extend of the rust. After that, I settled into a long period of rather dreary Vauxhalls, mainly because the endemic over-supply to the fleet markets throughout the 80s and 90s meant they could be picked up nearly new for about 60% of their new price.
The only interruption to that trend was the Montego. This was a bit of a reaction to the fact that the Astra that preceded it was horribly under-powered and under-equipped. The Montego offered a lot of power (by the standards I was used to) and a lot of kit for very little money (I conveniently ignored why that might be) and I gave in to the temptation. It lasted eleven months, during which I could actually hear it disintegrating in the garage at night.
The V6 Cavalier was a peach of a car, but the Vectra that followed it was so awful, I realised it was time to get away from the General, and head to the Four Rings. I've never regretted it and have never looked back, although I have to say the first A4 (a non-turbo 1.8 Automatic) was not a great drive, even if it was nice place to be.

Would think about trading up, but I can't think of anything a newer car could offer me (other than heated seats) that I don't get from my current B7? Would love to add a BMW 850 to the list at some point though

Not a secret, bad memory, bought it for £150 quid, needed a litte bodywork sprayed it black in smoothrite.... can't actually remember what model, some two door coupe I think, but it broke down a lot, got to know all of the AA men working the M2 at the time...

Got to admit other than a bm or merc I don't think I'd ever buy a lesser car again if I'm lucky enough to have the choice.
