Just a heads up, i was filling up at Kingston Park Tesco and they had a 25% off offer on the oil - i got a litre of 5W-30 for £9. dunno if it's particular to them, or the filling stations, or if the store itself runs the same deal, but worth checking out if one's close to you.

I was in that exact store this afternoon, but didn't notice it! Might pop back tomorrow :)

it was the rack of oils by the tills, not sure how long they're running the deal for but i didn't see a "today only" or such like on it.

1l of 5w 30 for £9 isn't cheap or worth it anyway

When you can get 5 l of 504 00 507 00 for £17 + vat , now that's a bargain :icon_thumright:

morrisons £5.98 audi vw spec

When TPS has a regular oil bonanza promo on :icon_thumright:

Exactly, plan ahead! I'd reckon that the Tesco oil would beat your TPS supplied oil when used to make chips though!??

Just remember, some of these oils are thought to be "vw spec" as that was what the plan was when the seller/brand were specing it, only a few companies ever submitted oils to get tested and approved.

Surely they all have to submit to achieve a LongLife 504 00 507 00 spec ?

I would have hoped that that you are correct, but that is not the way it works, could be that the wording is slightly different to allow them to make these claims - not good at all. Getting "your" oil accredited, it seems, costs a lot of money, and that is money that these cheapie brands can't justify spending, but will still make these claims - if you don't believe me, contact them directly, I would not expect them to respond! The "cheapie brands are not alone there, there are a few "better" and "credibly" brands that do exactly teh same thing, as I have said, it will be in the wording to describe their product, clever use of language.

What does Trading Standards think of it ?

I've seen all this (manufacturer approval stuff) discussed on other VAG forums and there does seem to be enough leaway in the way the oil's conformance is described to keep trading standards away, but allow mugs to buy it thinking that it is good!

So who's is tested and who's the great pretenders ?

I think in its simplest form, oils from lesser suppliers might get sent for a simple analysis to get compared with a known approved brand's sample, at its worst pure lies and guesses. I'd rather not name any - maybe use Google to get linked to some of these VAG forum threads. Put it this way, Fuchs do supply an oil to VAG engine plants, but don't assume that "VAG approved" Fuchs oils will all be that, similarly, there was a belief that Unipart oils were Fuchs rebranded so Unipart "VAG approved" = Fuchs = Fuchs used at VAG engine plants - not so. I too was rather naïve on this score - remember I am only using the Fuchs example as I remember reading about that and asked Unipart outlet about that, or rather, accidentally asked Fuch to comment on that - which they would not! I do trust Fuchs oils though in older VAG engines.

Similarly, I trust Comma oils, well the Ford Zetec specific oil, but I think that they could not confirm that they had submitted samples for official approval by VAG - doing that costs a fortune and hoping that they have got close enough is good enough for some of the cheaper brands.

Stuff "which oil companies have got vag approval" into www.google.co.uk

I've just checked that it brings some forum stuff up! But, when I went back it was not so interesting, maybe scan through the pages until you find a www.briskoda.net link.

If you value you car at all and plan in keeping the car I always say buy the best you can for it, it wouldn't bother me if the oil was £50 a litre for some good stuff I would pay it all day long.
