Engine Oil Top-up - Advice needed

Hi,
So my 1.6 Petrol was on Long life oil (personally not a fan but that is besides the point).

Driving back home and low engine oil light came on and needs topping up. Service is not due for another 3 months and MOT is around that time too.

So my question is:
- Should I top up Now and wait for service or should I just go for Full service?
- If its top up, can you recommend good oil and how much I should top up (1 ltr?)

if the oil light is on, it needs topping up regardless of time to the next service or risk it running out altogether, simple as. Top up should be however much it needs to get to the max mark on the dipstick!

Add some top oil then allow it to drain through to the sump for a few minutes before wiping the dip stick clean then check the level. Repeat this until the level is correct and do not overfill. Check the manual to confirm where full is on the dip stick.

As above, top up now or just go for your service early.

With regards to how to... run the engine for a few minutes idling on a flat surface. Turn off and let the engine cool for two minutes and then check the dipstick level by removing it, cleaning it and then plunging it and checking.
If it's showing low then top up by no more than 500ml at a time and repeat the above to check the new level before adding anymore.

What happens if you go past the max mark about 3mm

I bought a TT 2.0 3 weeks ago and the oil was past the max by about 5mm. The car was booked in for a service and cam belt and I asked about it. The view was that with this amount over there was nothing to worry about. Just the week before they had had to drain a sump where the oil level sensor had broken and the elderly owner had over filled by about 3.0 litres as the sensor kept on indicating more oil was needed.
Once drained out and sensor fixed there were no apparent lasting problems

Ended up buying from Lloyds motor spares for £35 4l (Only place close by). Didn't want to risk taking it out for a long drive!
