Well only had the S3 a couple of months but I've decided to downgrade down to a new shape A3 1.6TDI.
I know this is a massive downgrade power wise but that's what I want, really loved the S3 but the fuel consumption is shockingly bad, don't get me wrong I knew it would be but hopefully looking at selling my current property and buying somewhere new soon too so all the £ help.
Obviously I'll still be on the site which is a bonus cause there is some great members.

Wow, that is a change.

Is it really that bad. I have stage 2 and I'm seeing 30mpg unless I do intensive round town driving.

I've known a few folk change cars over MPG and unless they do big miles they never seem to really save the money they were hoping, but if it's what you want then you've chosen a decent next car so hopefully you won't miss it too much.

I'm seeing between 15-25MPG, putting £50-70 a week in the tank which over a year is obviously a fair amount.
I'm sure I will miss it a hell of a lot but like you say I'm moving to a decent car still so it's not all loss at all and other than the power and colour ill still be smiling.

Hmmm, I'm obviously not trying nearly hard enough as I'm getting 340-360 miles to a tank ATM! Best of luck with it chap, hope it delivers the savings / satisfaction you're after

Same here to be honest.

Stg4 and still averaging 28 mpg.

I need to try harder.

If I was getting that much I'd be most probably keeping it.
Savings I think will be a yes, satisfaction will most probably be a no lol
Still though, when I move I'll also get less earache off the other half so that's a bonus

Again I'd like that myself but don't think stage 4 would be cheap for me lol

Not cheap I admit but the bonus is its loud enough for you not to hear any complaints.

Ha ha Alex are you guaranteeing me that stage 4 will drowned the noise of my other half out when in the car? Might have to cancel my downgrade and upgrade the S3 lol

It works in two ways.

Either the noise drowns out the sound of the complaints or it's so damned fast that the passenger is too scared to complain.

Ha ha I can see the benefit of both results. Would remind me of me when I use to sit my **** on a 176BHP motorbike

I love watching bikes but you won't catch me on one!

Not many things compare with the power/weight of a good bike though.

No they really don't, was a Suzuki GSXR1000 moto gp replica and with me only been 5"5 was pretty much like a small child climbing aboard and not surprisingly when i did I had the mentality of a small child too.
Needless to say I racked up 11 points so thought it was maybe best to give that hobby up for a few years.

Sad times, but surely the depreciation over 2 months must of been massive, could that not have balanced off the idea of downgrading, for at least a year or so? Its such a lovely car and very exquisite, a 1.6 tdi won't be :( Plus if its the 8V shape? They're horrid inside and out i had a 2.0 tdi as a courtesy for a few days whilst they had my S3 in for a few bits and pieces and couldn't wait to get back in the cabin of my 8P, cheap and tacky is an understatement!

I see 25mpg+ average on my commute to work it would be more if i had further to go and could keep a constant speed for longer rather than stopping/starting at traffic lights etc.

To be honest the depreciation wasn't bad, I don't want to disclose on the open forum but what they offered me for it in the end I was happy with.
Yeah the cabin in the 8V is completely different, few things I do prefer though, nav screen hid away in the dash, location of the AMI, decent cup holders. I do find it a more simple and clean looking
It is still sad times though, might get it wrapped java green just so I don't lose that rare colour lol

Fair enough, i just hope you don't come to regret it! not thought about the 2.0 tdi instead of the 1.6?

I regret it already and would no matter what I was getting.
It's going to lead to me moving too though and you can't put a price on been happy in your home
Yeah I did, we're planning on selling a car and just running the one so I wanted the smaller engine for the other half too.

No i totally agree mate, plus in the long run investing cash into a house is going to see you a big payback, you'l never get the same out of a car! Happy house hunting anyway, just in the process of buying our second (and final) home now, but all the mods i wanted to do to my S3 will have to wait now, in favour of kitchens and carpets lol.

I'm not trying to change your mind, but you only live once and must make the most of it...

I know money matters in life but you shouldn't scarify your enjoyments for money in life...

I know most of you might laugh at me but once you're 50 you won't enjoy any car as much as you do now...

Beside how much money you think you'll save as opposed to 1.6 TDI?

Believe me it won't be that much... You must also consider the car value... S3s holds their values better than any other cars... So practically it would end up the same...

Hope it helps :)

I agree with Warren i'm seeing 34 mpg all be it standard from my S3! But it's better than the new dog carrier that is our brand-new passat LOL!

.

I 100% agree with you Farzad, you make a good point about an S3's value, especially an exclusive one thats a little different from the norm.

If it was me, id probably be looking at freeing up some cash out of the S3 and "downgrading" if you like to an older one, the pre 58 plates are still holding their value pretty well and probably will for a while yet, its just harder finding a low miler.

Personally I think it's a false economy, especially if you end up wrapping the new one green.

Are you sure there isn't something else driving the decision...

It is a false economy, because when you look at doing things like this, you look at the initial cost savings, rather than the long run i.e its cheaper to run and its cost nothing/very little to swap over, but as has already been said about the depreciation side of things a 1.6tdi will lose value quicker (especially if its new or fairly new) against an exclusive S3 black edition thats already a year or two old.

If I'm honest, you'd probably get more mpg from your S3 with a stage 1 remap.. *Runs away*

If your minds made up then fine, it is your decision at the end of the day, were only here to try & change your mind and provide alternative ideas :p

I was only joking about the wrapping.
I do completely agree with some things that are been said.
I'm going to be saving between £150 -£200 a month from swapping and more if we GR one car and unfortunately when going for a mortgage or a one for considerably more than I'm paying now money really has a big outcome on the answer. York isn't a cheap place to live, 2 bedroom semi where we want to live is going to cost roughly £160-£180k so I can't really be thinking of the cars depreciation and how it might affect me in 3 years time.
Unless you all want to club together and lend me £500 a month then I can keep it, stage 4 it and smile a **** load more lol.

Lol, I didn't meant you wouldn't enjoy it at all, I said not as much you do now... You are right, you could be 50, 60, 70 and still enjoying it...

Sorry if I been rude to some people here...

:)

Ok.
Here's my 5ps worth as well.

I'd had a selection of rather crappy cars until I hit 30 when I could at last afford a few goodies.

Had a 450bhp Cosworth followed by an ex-rally Escort Cosworth and a bit later on by the 500bhp S3.

Guess my age and tell me I'm not enjoying the car even more than the previous ones.
And if you doubt it you're welcome to a ride.

The Green Goblin is going again..........gutted to see your getting rid mate. Was so happy for you as you acquired a car that was adored by Jen and was bought at the same time as my S3....we bought almost on the same day. Hope everything works out for you. Did you manage to get hold of the STS with the Stage 1 off of Andrew? As this would of made a difference.

I've been asked when Im going to grow up.......well Im too old to care and too young to change.

hi mark, I spoke to him about the but never actually got the off him. Had loads of outgoings in January so just wasn't going to be am option at the time. I agree it is sad to see it go again but I hope it goes to someone who wants and will keep it for a long time

Let's see!

Seriously though I don't care for all that stuff about not enjoying cars/life in general as you get older.

I'm enjoying this car as much as any I've had bar the Escort but that was too far to truly use as a daily although I did just that.

At some point we should make a thread where we could all list our ages... That would be a thread of the year... :)

I'm 27 myself

Right!

Close.

I had the Sierra when I was in my early 30s.

The GpN Escort in my 40s.

And now this thing.
