Hi guys, we are going 2 test drive the above car this week and was just wondering if you guys n gals know about anything we should look out for? Its done 125,000 and is on a 2006 plate with full history 1 owner and lots o goodies fitted. Thanks for any help, Karl.

Hi,

The biggest concern about the 3.2 engine wise is the chain rattle. Which is a costly job as the tensioners tend to wear. And if i recall its a engine out job.

IF you familiar with what I am referring to you will spot this easy if not. The best way is to go start the car when its cold preferably before letting the dealer start it and you will hear the chain rattle it naturally will do it for a second or 2 as the oil pressure has to build up if it stops id say thats a good sign but if it continues id walk away unless you have quite some cash to cover the cost.

Also make sure the car gets up to temp easily and quickly should sit at around 90 degrees. When the engine is nice and warm go listen to the engine again and try and listen for the chain rattle as the oil will be thinner than when you started the car so the noise will be more pronounced.

Other things would be good would be to have a full service history is always important.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the advice, it has a full audi history and only one owner from new who has spent a lot o cash on extras so that should be a good sign me thinks lol will have a listen but can it easily be noticed over othet engine noise like injectors?

Well having a full audi history is always good. But I will warn you up front if you dont know this already that even thou its got the full service history there are alot of things audi don't consider to be serviceable that should be done like gearbox fluid changes, rear diff fluid changes as they consider it fluid for life. As for the chain and tensioner again they feel it should last the life of the engine. But this is not the case there is numerous complaints about them on the 3.2 as well as the 2.0t but they don't for see it to be considered a recall.

Having said all the above at the end of the day its your money and by no means am I trying to put you off your purchase.

But to reply about the noises to listen out for yes its quite distinct noise once you have your ear on it. The noise below if you listening to when the guy starts the engine you will hear the noise and when it goes down to idle you will hear it.

2009 Audi A4 3.2 FSI valve roller Noise at start up - YouTube

Like a chain whirling as well as the grinding noise.

Start up around 0.05-0.07.

And the tensioners you can hear around 0.25- onwards.

Also forgot to mention the water pumps are prone to going. So check in the history if that has been done.

Thanks again for the info and time, will have a good look through the history and see whats been done! What sort o mileage do these problems start 2 show up? Any more info guys? Was thinking about some new rubber on all 4 wheels but have read that Goodyear eagles are not recommended for the quattro so what do you guys recommend?

Thinking about the Goodyear Eagle F1 Gsd 3 on all 4 corners?

I am one of the members that said no to the Gd Years AS2 as quattro GMBH strongly are against them even thou it is a brilliant tyre but due to the nature of the asymmetric, soft side wall, outter tread and so on. And how i know all this is last year i was in Germany were i want and visited GMBH were my Audi DTM was built and as I am in the course of getting tyres replaced who better to ask than the people that made the vehicle. They supplied me with a list of tyres they recommend just so you don't think I am making this up as I go along.

Is there any particular you stuck on Goodyear?

Hi, thanks for your reply. I was thinking about the gsd3's not the asymmetric are they still not recommended?
