Hi Guys,

I finally picked up my A3 - In the end went for a 2012 A3 2.0 TDI Black Ed 3dr in Ibis White. Brill car and even better than my Scirocco which I wasn't expecting after deciding to go for a more family friendly car. ha

I have since purchased an RNS-E L.E.D Nav and had it fitted last night by Dannyk9 - Highly recommend him, great price to do the job and happy with the work he did including swapping the interior bulbs for the L.E.D. supplied by T8ups.

I will post pictures once I have given the car a clean, ha

Anyway I have put my SD Card in which I was using on my VW RNS-510 and I have a slight issue ? On the VW Nav the music appeared perfectly - Artist > Album and you could then choose the tracks etc.
On the RNS-E when I put my card this is not displaying correctly, pretty much all my songs aren't in the files (I simply copied and pasted the files from iTunes > ITunes Media > Music on my to my SD Card - Sandisk 32gb Class 10).
Also getting a number of files duplicated on screen or showing as corrupt ?

Thanks

I copy mine in as mp3s just into root/artist/album/track format. The RNS interface is crap compared to the RCD510 I had in my passat. I miss doing a shuffle on all tracks which you can't seem to do in RNS.

Sorry what do you mean root / artist / album track format ?

Im using a MBP so need to find a way to do this as easily as possible, ha

Im making some progress now - created a new folder for each artist on the SD Card and put the files in. All my Music is there now however:

For a lot of the songs getting a 2nd version also displaying - file corrupt but the original works
File called Trashes is also displayed

On the RNS-510 you could physically delete these corrupt files from the head unit can this be done on the RNS-E or can someone advise on how to sort this as its for quite a lot of my songs.

Thanks

I am haven some trouble getting my system to read my card mp3 format is on the card but still not haven any joy

The second file you are getting is either a data file or the album cover, I had this issue when using a mac. I ended up having to do the following:

1) covert library to 320kbps MP3 files
2) download an app called BlueHarvest (it's a pay app but you can get a trial version)
3) run app and then copy files from iTunes into relevant folders on your FAT32 formatted cards

What does BlueHarvest do? It removes all the guff /extras and just leaves the plain music file in the transfer process. Therefore the RNSE won't be hunting past files that don't read/look like duplicates.

I'm not sure if it also works in Windows but might be worth going to site & checking.

I was having problems until someone told me that only letters and numbers can be read.
I connected my card to my pc and altered the folder names removing any - / : etc and they all work now.

Also check for any hidden files and remove them.

Ok so what I have done is

1. Empty trash can on Mac to get rid of file trashes
2. Format SD Card
3. Effectively rebuilt my entire iTunes as MP3 (Couldn't find 320kbps)
4. Copied Files from iTunes > iTunes Media > Music > Copied and passed as current format (Folder for each artist and then the album within each one). Hopefully this will work ! If not going to have to re-create all the folders again
5. Downloaded the recommended programme - BlueHarvester
6. Run the Clean up on the SD Card once all the music has been copied

Hope this will fix the issue if not I'm kinda stuck. Wasn't this much trouble on my A1 or on the Scirocco

On a Mac when you delete files on an external drive they're not actually deleted unless you empty the trash. They're put in a hidden folder which the RNS-E is still reading I guess.

I use an app from the Mac App Store (CleanMyDrive: Clean Up Mac Hard Drives for Free. External Hard Drive Cleaner) which detects these hidden files and deletes them before you remove the disc. Even when you eject the drive from Finder it still works, very handy.

Ok think I have fixed it at last - took forever. ha ha

Thanks for all your help guys

I couldn't believe what a ball ache it would end up being; glad you go it sorted.

Yes it was a ball ache

Now my next question the knob seems to turn anti-clockwise to move up/down the tracks can this be changed ?

Thanks

Not as far as I'm aware, I've had to live with that quirk for 7 years.

Might be worth PM'ing forum member NHN on here as he should be able to give you a definitive answer on anything coding related.

the RNS-E really is a piece of crap.

the RNS-E really is a piece of crap.

The HD facelift on the later models didn't really add much to the mix, the system was well past it's sell by date by the time it ended it's life. It always felt like half a job to me, the GALA with Bose was terrible, the menu interface was clunky, the volume ramping is awful, the menus aren't great, the sound adjustment is poor, the steering controls are a mess, you don't get iPod data on screen, it's not touch screen like the VW Nav units..... I could go on forever! I did like the temporary S3 splash screen, other than that....

I'm sure Audi use a very similar unit in R8's and Lambo's as it looks near identical to the A3 / TT unit. Gobsmacking. Did I say how easy it is to nick ;-)

I upgraded to the 2012 one and while a good improvement its still pretty pish. The RCD510 I had in my 06 passat was much better.

and no full postcode mapping? ***.

Another query - Is the volume level (like a bar as you would get on your TV etc) meant to display as you adjust the level ?

Not aware on mine that it does, do you have Bose?

Ive got the older version of the RNSE and i must admit once i worked out how to format my tunes for the older style SD cards, i haven't had a problem at all with it & won't be bothering to upgrade to the newer one. The nag, radio and mp3 systems work fine.

I find that it is a little slow loading tunes off a card but i have a few 3 disc albums on them with all the songs in one file rather than splitting them up into discs, once i do this the loading times should reduce significantly :)

Emailed NHN and he messaged me back saying he doesn't offer support for units that haven't come from him, lol
