Hello,

New to the forum and Audi, just got myself a lovely A4 S-Line 2.0 T FSI Automatic, really nice car but I'm only getting 10-15MPG according to the average MPG on the DIS. Only done 100Miles and used half a tank, I'm pretty sure it should be a little higher than this, small amount of town driving but mainly Dual Carriageway. I'm not driving like a racing driver, gentle acceleration is used, car isn't doing anymore than 2000RPM, so very gentle driving.

I'm not the best with cars so have no idea really what could be causing it, any ideas on things I should check before I take it to a garage and try and get them to diagnose the problem. I had someone scan the car and the only faults I could find are the following:

Code:
3 Faults Found:012423 - Voltage Supply Relay for Engine Components
               P3087 - 004 - Electrical Malfunction - Intermittent

Any ideas?

Hej Terry and welcome to the Forum. I would say that you should be getting a lot more mpg for half a tank Matey. Am sure someone with more diagnostic knowledge will be able to shed some light on your poor mpg. How's the car running.....is temp needle bang on 90c mark, have you had it serviced recently......has the diverter valve been changed?

Give us more info Mucker!

Cheers

Hey Terry

Welcome to the forums. Its always disappointing when purchasing a vehicle you want and when you get it there always seems to be something not correct. Any how let me try help you with the above information supplied.

Firstly were abouts are you based?

Are you getting any warnings on the dash?

With regards to the faults:

012423 - Voltage Supply Relay for Engine Components
P3087 - 004 - Electrical Malfunction - Intermittent

This just means either the car has been standing for a long period of time and the alternator has not had a chance to charge the battery. Otherwise it means you battery is very weak or low on voltage hence "Voltage: 10.414 V" . You could try driving the car a bit and when you stop and have the car idling put a voltmeter on the car and see if the voltage is over 14v then you know the alternator is doing its job by charging the car. Then turn the vehicle off and wait 2 mins then put the voltmeter on the car again and check the voltage if its below 11.5-11.7 the battery is on its way out.

This 005634 - Power Supply Terminal 30
P1602 - 002 - Voltage too Low - Intermittent

Again relates to the above, either the contacts on the battery are not making a clear contact or the battery is weak or the alternator is not charging the car.

Now considering the 2 faults are linked ill advise on the following: If multiple Control Module have Power Supply Faults stored, it's most likely to be one common Problem like the ones mentioned above.

Terminal 30 means unswitched battery power that is supplied even when the ignition is off. This is not referring to any physical terminal numbered 30.

Now for the last one : 008801 - Boost Pressure Control Valve (N249) P2261 - 008 - Mechanical Malfunction - Intermittent

This is also known as a diverter valve.

This one is quite vital for you car to be working correctly.

Thou straight forward either you N249 is faulty or the wires or connectors connecting to it are split or arent making proper contact. They have been known to split. Especially the earlier models. I am guessing yours has split considering I dont know the year of your car if its a later model yours most likely will have the previous version that split. They have uprated model which is 06H145710D.

Refer to the image in this link and you wil understand what I am talking about - http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/audi-s4-a4-a4-cab-b7-chassis/192131-b7-diverter-valve.html

Even if you drive like a granny under 2000rpm if you putting your foot down you will either hear a whishing noise or notice the car feels underpowered after 3000rpm. Then you know for sure its your diverter valve.

As for the DIS if you battery is not running correctly it could be throwing it off you can reset your DIS. Try and work out your fuel consumption manually.

Hope this helps.

Car seems to be running really nice, no strange noises stand out, car reaches and maintains 90c temp, really smooth gear changes. The previous owner had a service done in June 2013, I think it was just an oil change though at an Audi Specialist. I have no paperwork for any of the work thats been carried out, I would of thought so as the car has hit 65k Miles / 7 Years and again from looking at the service book, no ATF Change or Cambelt change which I would of thought it would of had done, just had the Cambelt changed and at the same time had the car scanned for any faults thats why I have the log and error codes. He said all the sensors are showing normal readings apart from one, I think it was the Boost Pressure, not too sure I think he said its a little low, but he only come down to change the cam belt and advised to bring it into the garage for diagnosis.

I just experienced something odd, the other MPG display, I think its the current MPG (Sorry only had the car a few days still getting used to all the buttons) is fluctuating drastically again not sure if this is normal. DIS is showing 185Miles left on half a tank of petrol which Im guessing is what I should be getting, not 100miles! I just took the car around the block to show you what I mean and before anyone asks, yes I had someone film it :)

Hi, I did just post a reply however I think it said a MOD had to approve the post, was a long message and then it went to another page, didn't get time to read it all, it may be because I put a link in the post with a video of the DIS!

Thanks for the replies, Ill have to have a look at the Diverter Valve and see if I can see any signs.

The car is a 2007. Chassis Type: 8H (8H - Audi Cabrio B6/B7 (2003 > 2009))

I just took the car for a test drive, and managed to get it to 15.6MPG! Haha, although when I changed the DIS to I think its the live MPG calculation it was fluctuating between 10MPG to well over 100MPG which seemed very odd. Says I have about 185miles left till i need to refuel and I have about half a tank of petrol in it, however it said I had just over 420miles left 100 miles ago when I had a full tank.

EDIT: Also forgot to mention every now and then when I was viewing the live MPG display it sometimes diddnt show a reading and just had ---- displayed on the screen.

EDIT 2: Sorry I'm in Essex within the M25 and no warnings on the dash.

Yes most likely will be because you had done under 10 posts if I remember correctly.

The diverter has to be removed in order to see any signs of damage and is a bit of a pain to get too unless you have small hands.

Best way to get to it is take off the belly pan and then unscrew the 3 screws holding it in.

Mine does fluctuate between 10-200 mpg it all depends how you drive. If you avg mpg is reading low then your fuel tank range will be low as well.

If you can get the car up to 20-25 mpg avg you will see the range will go up from 185 miles left. Probably around 200-220 left.

If your foot is not on the accelerator and you are just coasting you will see --- on the screen. So that is normal.

I see, might be a bit of a pain to get to then. Good to here that the fluctuations are normal, however very odd that my average MPG is low and the fuel tank range is normal =/

Photo 2

I wouldn't say your fuel tank range is normal. Id say over 200 at least.

Just to clarify you do realise that trip 1 on some Audis reset after every drive you do and some dont.

What does your trip 2 say for avg MPG.

Oh right, I would be happy to get 200 miles on half a tank haha.

Ah right, silly question but how do I change to trip 2 and ill have a quick look.

You press the button under your stalk not the one on the side. The one you use to reset it but you just press it this time.

Well that is a bit better. But still not great. I reckon that diverter valve will be throwing the system off a bit. But I don't see it throwing it off that much. But I could be wrong.

Just remember scanning your car doesn't always mean that there isn't something mechanical wrong.

Usally when MPG is that bad its from a bad lambda or MAF sensor. But either usually will flag up when scanning your vehicle.

You should be getting 500 miles a tank driving as you say you do. so full tank at 180 odd miles is not right at all!
I have 2006 TFSI also and get 400 - 550 a tank from full on long runs

500!! Im lucky to get 450 with a manual :( But then again mine is a quattro. Thou I would think the Auto boxes will take a knock to the manual FWD figures.

Yeah mine is Manual FWD so maybe thats the slight difference. However that is very careful driving..as you know its damn easy to take off like a rocket in these and destroy the mpg reading lmao

This man has a point ^^

Well the quoted figures for a sedan 2.0tfsi sline multi tronic:

EC Urban (mpg)25.2
EC Extra Urban (mpg)44.8
EC Combined (mpg)34.9

So ye id say you abit off only 10 mpg more to go

Wow, 500! :) I tend to fill up having done about 380 miles. My average is 30mpg (calculated, not DIS). Then again I don't like playing chicken with the fuel gauge. :)

Yeah, yeah Craig. I saw you on YouTube. :)

Hahaha! I wasn't driving steady then! New video coming soon :) 5000 rpm launch this time haha!
Jokes aside, my morning commute is steady coz it's busy and I refuse to put more than £40 per week in for work, so I make it last. K03 140 miles to £40 all town driving. K04 hybrid 165 miles to £40. Don't ask me why it's better coz I really don't know lol! :)

Thiught I'll give you guys a quick update. Going to get the mechanic to change my ATF and get him to have a look at my DV. I was in halfords the other day and saw a bottle of redex advanced 5 in 1, claimed to increase MPG so done a little research, saw some very good stuff and some very bad reviews on it, I thought for £15 it's worth a shot. Put it in this morning before work and after a few mins my average MPG on trip 1 shot up to 33MPG! Drove it around a bit on my lunch break and was hovering between 29-33MPG so I'm very pleased. No idea what it's done but my DIS is reading a dramatic improvement it's almost doubled my MPG! My question is, what exactly does Redex do? I hope it's cured my problem and not just a temp fix.

Is it the injector cleaner you've used? Could have just cleared a blockage. Have you reset your mileage range aswell? I always reset mine every time I fill up. That way I can compare my driving style to my mileage per £40. I tend not to rely on the DIS as sometimes it's not mega accurate. But once you know your getting roughly what you should be per tank, then you can rely on the DIS :)

the DV will reduse power not take that much MPG away
is your temp sitting at 90 ?
and geting there quick ?

It was redex advanced fuel system cleaner. 5 in 1.

The temp sits at 90 and gets there pretty quick within the first mile I would say. About to leave work so will report back if I'm still getting an improved MPG. I have reset the trip and will see how many miles till half a tank, previously I got 100 so hopefully I'll get 200 this time around.

EDIT: Back from work, average MPG was 25MPG so still an improvement, I hope its done the trick!

I just like to ask, which I should have done in the past replies.

But what fuel do you use? Just out of interest.

My first fill up was using normal Tesco petrol, why do you ask?

I figured as much. Tesco fuel is not the best. And I know a lot of people will argue that point.

But regardless were it be BP, Tesco, Esso what ever.

You should be running the premium stuff in that boi of yours. Which again this might bring an argument that the fuel makes no difference blabla.

Well the reality is, I am not sure if you have ever checked inside your fuel cap but it does state "Recommend the Vehicle to be run on 98RON. It does also state it can run on 95RON but will have decreased performance. But honestly the car much prefers it and you will notice the difference for sure.

Now the best place to get that fuel is from Shell as they have VPower Nitro+ which is 99RON. Which is completely safe.

The best part is the cleaner the fuel the better the burn rate and keeps most of the internals nice and clean were it be injectors fuel lines.

In the long run it will cost you £6 extra to fill up on a tank instead of using normal fuel.

Now getting to my point having said that you run on tesco fuel I doubt it would have caused the issue as im still curious why it ran so poorly. But when adding redex to fuel is just essentially raising the octane. Hence why people buying it say there car runs or performs better because the car has better detonation, the timing advances etc.

Anyway so just some food for thought.

Shell V-Power Nitro all the way. Pays for itself in better fuel economy, and the car runs better.

Interesting. I will check out the Shell VPower Nitro+ on my next fill up, I have a Shell station on the way to work. I haven't checked the fuel cap, I have only had the car a couple of weeks hence why I was a little disappointed when it was performing so badly, If I can consistently get 25-30MPG I'm a happy boy. Service is due in 6 months time, I might push it forward to next month as I'm not too certain the previous place serviced it well, Cambelt wasn't changed, ATF not changed, air filter never changed, spark plugs never changed, you get the picture. Car is 65k on the clock and 7 years old.

And scotty has a FWD just like yours but manual and its been chipped. But to be fair stage 1 audis get better fuel than normal ones.

Well just to comment a bit more on the price. Around my area

Normal fuel is : 128.9
Premiem (vpower) : 136.9

I mean if you think about it logically the car is running in a "detuned" state so it has to use more to get less if that makes sense.

But if you can use all 200/220hp then less input is used to gain more.

Even thou there is a the hype about prem fuel I have seen it used in many cars and even thou you getting less litres for the money spent compared to normal fuel. The joke is I have seen so many cars fuel economy improve ranging from a crappy citreon saxo to some top of the line audis.

Shell V-Power all the way! No need to buy all these extra fuel additives, Shell do plenty of research and their V-Power fuels contain all the additives you'll need to keep you fuel system cleaner. I noticed alot less smoke and about 30-40 miles more per tank on my 3.0TDI.

I always run my B7 2.0 TFSI Quattro Special edition (220) on V POWER Nitro +.
it will return 30mpg if I'm really careful :shutup2: , and that's mostly driving Country lanes.
Also the pick up when you boot it is noticeably stronger than when I've used lesser octane fuel in the past:superman:.
it just sucks that I have to drive 8 miles out of my way to go and get it :( .But its worth the trip every week to know that, in the long run at least , the engine is running cleaner , pulling stronger and there is less chance of the clogging up people see with these direct injected engines. plus its a nice drive :p

For reference the price was 1.42 yesterday

I think the prices he quoted were for petrol not Diesel Jeff. :whistle2:

I'm moving to where you live. V-Power Nitro + is £144.9 round my way.

Yes the prices quoted for petrol but if you must know the diesel price is

Normal diesel - 135.9
Vpower diesel - 143.9

And you would have to move to Berkshire to get these sort of prices thou they not much diff if your diesel is 144.9, there is a house for sale around the corner if you interested lol
