Currently looking to change the wife's 07 plate 1.9 tdi sport (highly spec'ed) with 80k on the clock.

Have been having a little search around and was thinking either another A3 either 1.6 tdi / 2.0tdi or a 1.4 tsi petrol as she only does 8000 miles a year.

Was also thinking of a Golf GT with either the 1.4 tsi or a 2.0 tdi lump. Strangely enough the Audis seem a little bit cheaper. I have been looking at sport spec again as a comparison.

Anyone with a 1.6 tdi or TSI who would care to comment as a comparison. I.e,problems, mpg etc

I have around 6k in cash to spend plus the value of my old car which what car suggests I would get 5.8k for as it's not in the best condition ( kerbed alloys, small dent in bonnet, scratched door and scuff on rear bumper) however great mechanical condition and full history with lots of toys. I just don't know whether to sell private and risk it not selling or just trade it in.

Any comments appreciated peeps

I must admit they just look a bit more modern but the a3 is still good

I had a mk5 golf and the build quality was just not up to scratch when compared with the Audi.

I'd look at a mk6 Golf too, and in petrol. 8000miles a year not worth getting a diesel, and the petrol will likely be cheaper to buy too, along with better refinement.

Mmmm being looking at GT spec with 160 BHP but not sure about the reliability. However coming from a 1.9'tdi which is bombproof I suppose anything else is always going to be less reliable

I wished that I kept my golf gt tdi over the a3.

Mk6 gt tdi is a lovely car to drive and the mk5 for that matter.

I loved my MK5 GTi for it's raw power, sound and those figure hugging leather seats...
Having said that, my current A3 Quattro TSFi is as fast, quieter, smoother and, in grey colour more covert on the road.

I just think the golf feels like a hot hatch so to speak ( even the gt tdi ) and the audi just doesn't IMO , I find the a3 quite boring.

I've done the opposite and changed from a mk6 gtd to my S3 and in terms of quality and sporty feel the Audi wins hands down in every way.
Interior quality of the golf is poor creaks rattles etc.
I ended up removing the door trims and packing them with foam to kill some of the road noise.
Wouldn't have another or recommend one.

It's pot luck with interior rattles, my golf was silent and so was the road noise , maybe with a suspension change the audi would feel better but out the box I find the golf has a more sportier feel without a doubt .

But that's me comparing a diesel audi to a diesel golf sport models

I just find the power delivery borin in a3 and s3's

I'm sure with some engine work that it would improve greatly and give more of a thrill .

Which do I go for ?

Only been offered over the phone 5k for mine on a trade in which is a bit disheartening.

I was expecting a bit more than this. Looks like I will have to dig deeper into my pockets for a car I won't even drive.

I would go for the Golf, newer model

Only 5k on trade-in? Sell private then pal, you'll be sure to get more than that on a 07 model, especially if it's spec'd up!

It's a bit of a risk as we need a car. So do I buy a car then try and sell and risk being stuck with it or just trade and have no aggro. Mechanically it's top top but as it's the wife's she has no respect for it. Therefore it's not as mint as I would like. Parking scrape on rear bumper, scratch on door, small bud dent in bonnet and all 4 wheels kerbed. I jut think it might put buyers off. What do you think.

The problem is that I bet any money that the dealer offers you less when you get there and they've gone round it properly.

Probably right Alex. I don't know whether to just get the body work sorted or take a hit. I reckon I am looking around 6 to 700 hundred to get the bumper, door and bonnet done and then another 200 for refurbing the wheels. I was offered 5 (tentative meaning I really need about 6 to break even.

Doesn't seem worth the aggro.

I might have to just look for a cheaper replacement car, maybe an 09 plate or 58 plate golf.

just had a quick peek at the Autotrader and there is a huge variance in price on these things. They are going from anywhere between £ 5.5K to well over 7K.

I think I might just stick it in the classifieds, trader and pistonheads at £6300 ono and see if I get a nibble.

Might be better of comparing the prices to the private ads rather than the trade ads , trade ads will prob be more appealing because they offer warranty and finance etc so there prices tend to be higher

good point, thanks for the advice Alex.

If I can get around £ 5800 for it I would be more than happy.

I went from a 2010 mk6 GT to 2012 8P s-line + xenons. (which ive now made more or less a black edition outside)

I think the A3 wins hands down on looks. However as mentioned above the mk6 is miles ahead interior and a much comfier ride.

I've got my current A3 for another 12 months on lease, if I had the chance to have the mk6 back for 12 months I'd take it.

Ive always thought the a3 looks nicer but A specced up mk6 looks decent , especially on the grey colour , I think they look more modern .

I wish I kept my golf, got bored of the a3 within weeks of buying it.

I've had both an 8P A3 and a Mk6 Golf (albeit a GTI). I would say go for the Mk6, it's a newer car (ok still based on the 8P/Mk5 chassis) but the 8P interior hasn't changed much since it was first released

just went to have a look at this
2010 10 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF 2.0 GT TDI DIESEL 5DR DIESEL | eBay

a little bit at the top of my price range but if they offered me 5700 for mine I could have had a deal.

What a dog ! 6" crease in the middle of the drivers door !

How do these dealers expect to sell cars of this value with significant damage to them.

God I hate looking for a new car !

to be honest I also have a 2012 a3 8P black edition and I LOVE the interior. Really nice place to be. The 8P for me is pretty timeless inside especially when you compare to the likes of a button overload in say a focus or astra. The golf interior looks okay but compared to my black edition it looks a little bit bare and sparse. However I think an RNS510 retrofit would be on the cards if I bought a car without it.

I think these look lovely and more modern, would have to be all black , not keen on the red bits.

I'd put it on trader, you'll get interest. I'd personally accept a few scrapes here and there as long as it's been maintained under the bonnet and yours sounds like it has.

Out of curiousity, was that the price quoted to you by Ashbrow? I bought my a3 off them...

Ashbrow was where I bought it from 3 1/2 years ago. It was just over 3 years old with 58k on it and I paid a smidge over 10k for it.

Another garage just got back to me and offered similar on a trade which was 4700 to 5300 depending on condition. Sounds like I only gonna get about 5 k for it. So I am now looking at a replacement car around the 10.5k mark which leaves me 500 for the extra on insurance, tax and if it needs the odd thing doing to it

I am tempted by the trader to sell private but can't be without the car for any length of time. That then means if I sell it I am under pressure to buy and with that many dogs out there I may panic buy and get a bad one.

What a dilemma ! I hate buying cars

Chopped it in this afternoon for 5200 meaning the cost to change is 5250

Pick up new car when the plates are changed and I have ran a full tank of diesel down which will take a few weeks ImageUploadedByTapatalk1391205423763462
