New RS3 - launch in Spring 2014 and maybe 400bhp ?

75 extra horses would be lot for a 'plus' model. 20-30 seems more likely.

That still suggests that the next gen RS3 would have 360+ bhp, though. One thing to keep in mind - Audi have a habit of engineering their range so that a lower price / positioned model doesn't completely outshine a higher placed one. There is no way the next RS3 will completely out perform the current RS4, for example, as that would threaten sales of the more expensive car. So even if they could make a 400 bhp model, it seems unlikely.

I suspect the 400 figure for the next RS3 is a throw back to the A3 saloon concept which had a 2.5T that developed 400 bhp; I don't think Audi have a history of telegraphing engine power in this way, but someone might know more?

It seems the competition is heating up again in this sector, there is a lot in the press this week about a possible Golf 'Evo' R with 370 bhp - using the same engine as the S3 - to take on the A45 AMG. Even more interesting is claimed kerb weight below 1400kg and lots of performance goodies like carbon parts and even a roll cage.

Golf R Evo on the way - PistonHeads

This raises a couple of questions. Could the 2.0 engine tuned to 370bhp+ also power the next RS3? Dropping the 2.5 in favour of lower emissions etc? Or is the next RS3 with the 2.5 set for over 400bhp standard? With the lower weight of the new S3 platform it will seriously cramp the RS4s style. With 400bhp and say 1500kg weight it should be under 4s to 60 and 10s to 100 standard (and well over £45k price tag is my guess). Now if the next RS4 is also a turbo with say 480+bhp then no problem... I suspect the new TT launch will tell us much more.

Some 10-years ago I/we had to take 6-tubs of Ion-Exchange resin from Burntwood, Staffs, to a Company (AGFA) in Coal Road Leeds: 104-miles away.

Ion-Exchange resin is heavy so 2-vehicles were needed; one was a humble Vauxhall Astra estate and the other a relatively modern Vauxhall Cavalier (our salesman's company car…).

A colleague of mine (George) some 7-years older than I drove the Astra: actually the Astra was the works van/estate that he also used for personal use. George was always a very steady driver attending (boringly) to each and every speed-restriction, etc.

I drove the Cavalier (and was running a Carlton GSI3000, a Lotus Elan, and an MG Metro Turbo at the time).

Now I didn't particularly like this salesman: I don't particularly like salesmen in general, but that is beside the point I am trying to make here; but this one was forever trying to get the last mile, and I mean the very-last mile, out of every tankful of 3-star.

On this particular day, however, I'd a fairly full tank of 'his' petrol.

The run to Leeds was uneventful, however, once empty of our cargo we set off back to Burntwood, George behind driving steadily as was his usual style, and me giving the Cavalier the FULL-beans!

Now the run from Leeds to Burntwood was mixed with city roads to start, then on to the M1 motorway, the A38 around Nottingham, Derby, Burton-on-Trent, to Lichfield; and then onto the urban stuff once again to Burntwood.

A great run, and I'd thoroughly enjoyed it; and the car felt as though it had been properly exercised throughout the run. And very little petrol left in the tank, oh the joy of it…

So, there was I sat in the office tidying up my paper work when through the door, as casual as you like, appears George! No way!!!

How the f***! have you got here in this time? Which way did you come? Did you go to the right or left of the road works on the M1? Have you been givin' it some? How the hell have you made such good time? How? No way George, no way!

But he had, and the lesson my friends was/is clear; and we've all experienced it. George had driven exactly the same route as I and at a more sedate pace, but that momentary traffic for him and/or for me had made the time difference over the 140-miles.

So with all of these forthcoming cars from Audi (or whoever) a nano second here or a nano second there isn't worth a cent in real road terms.

Another 50 or 250bhp is truly inconsequential on today's roads, and it is getting worse.

SAFETY, especially with family or friends in the car, is far more important.

The RS3 with its marriage of a 2.5 litre 5-pot engine, 7-speed DSG, relatively small on-the-road envelope, quattro drive train, and 4-doors, is hugely effective, in ALL weathers. It IS a very SAFE road car.

Whatever else you might get, however good it looks in the magazine and/or in the showroom, however much you spend and/or borrow, you ain't gonna' get much better than what you have now as year-round road car for UK use. The times and roads are now certainly a-changin'.

PS: George is no longer with us but I remember him well as the best pressure vessel 'welder' I have ever come across; he was also a gentleman and a friend…

Yes I think you're right, VW Group poached the A45 AMG engine man from Mercedes  so I guess they need to use his talents to get one over on Mercedes !

New Turbo Four To Feature In S3 Plus Model, Other Hot Audis

Quote :

The insane power figures have been achieved with the use of a custom-built cylinder head, a new ECU, a larger turbocharger and a different exhaust system, though the block, crankcase, crankshaft and conrods of the standard EA888 are retained. Ironically, it's said to have been developed by Friedrich Eichler, who developed Mercedes' own uber-powerful four-cylinder and was poached by VW last year.

At the top of the range, the TT-S will get an all-new 2.0-litre turbo, producing 275bhp and 380Nm of torque. But the TT-RS will stick with a reworked version of its five-cylinder 2.5-litre TFSI, boosted to around 375bhp.

This was today wrt the new TT; Would the 5 pot mentioned be the power plant for the new RS3?

It will need to be 400bhp to compete with the a45, especially the 400bhp black edition that is coming

I assume the next rs4 will be the 500bhp twin turbo v6 that vag have been showing off so no problems with fitting in the range

I just pray they keep the current cars suspension and not the horrible feeling-less playstation dynamic suspension they put in the rs4 golf r etc

RS4 with a V6 - nooooo. That car is illegal without a V8 in it :p lol

The RS3 will be a sport back and also available in the saloon I have been told should be next year sometime. I know which one I'm putting my name down for the saloon be a mini RS4 B7 can't wait.

The V8 is at odds with what a quattro RS car should be IMO, a do anything in any weather hyper real world car

The V8 although glorious on full chat is hopelessly dead below 4k rpm which makes it a very poor real world engine

Now a blown V6 with a zillion torque instantly available (like the RS6) that's an RS4 I would buy

Odds are it won't be a limited run special so they will flood the market with them which will hammer the residuals

I agree with you Dave, I struggled to see what the current V8 RS4 added over the RS3 at the launch. I just got the nagging feeling that they decided to stretch the life of the V8 engine when really they should have got the drop on BMW and gone V6T early. Evo magazine also say the V8 in the R8 doesn't work so well with the S-tronic box. I'm guessing that when the M3/4 win the road tests with the outgoing N/A C63 (remember the E63 has already switched to 5.5l biturbo) and RS4 we will soon see the new V6T motors with improved MPG and low CO2 figures to tempt all the company car buyers back.
