I got a lovely car....










The problem is I'm spending too much on petrol, it's a stark contrast to my old Vauxhall.

These cars aren't designed for short journeys - I am doing around 30-50 miles a week and I worked out I am spending around £25-£30 per week on petrol alone. I worked out that my MPG could be 15 miles per gallon - but it's probably a shade more than this.

So far it has been a fantastic, and enjoyable car but very far from efficient in terms of petrol!

Thoughts? Does anyone else have this problem!?
Is it time to get a more economical car?
 
Ive just got the 2.0T S Line and came from a TDI. about 20mpg difference, it does use more fuel but i didnt think it was "that" bad tbh. I do longer journeys at times but i guess if you purely do short trips you will see less mpg out of it.

whats your driving style like :p
 
I see the quattro badge above your glove box that partially explains the thirst is it a 1.8T or 2.0T?

mines a thirsty B***H too MPG range goes from 17 to 35 depending on the driving style as mentioned by Av4nt above.
Also note I do a lot of short trips too , mostly drive just around the town still getting 25+ MPG if i drive normally /sensible.
I'm quite happy with the car and wouldn't change it for nothing.
Well maybe for something else with the 4 rings badge on it.
So if your'e getting under 20 mpg's than You either drive like a lunatic or there's something wrong with the car.

I went from a A4 1.9tdi where i was putting in 10-20 quid a week max in to a 3.2 A3.

Im not putting in 30-40 a week it does annoy me as its costing me money but i actually enjoy driving again.

Im sure im averaging around 16-18MPG on a daily basis!
 
Nice car Matey....and as you now know these cars don't like trundling along at 30mph!.....Has your car had a good recent service.....no dodgy thermostat for example. The temp needle should be bang on 90c. My car was drinking the stuff until I changed that part! It might help if you have the engine running as sweet and healthy as it can, natch.

Hi all,

It is a 2.0T Quattro that I have but my driving style is very conservative and calm
I don't go any harsh acceleration or breaking I am pretty cool on the road too

basically 95% of the time I drive like an OAP lol
so it's definitely not my driving style - these cars aren't designed for stop /start journeys
 
yer it has had a service in August now :)
 
Nice car - realistically though, isn't it something of a "performance car" with resultant expectations? Including fuel consumption? That said, you are driving a quality car, with a sports badge, and it's a Quattro to cap it all - not jealous in any way.

Top Speed152 mph - mmmmmm
Power Output216 bhp - very nice!!

FWIW my standard 2.0 SE (which doesn't do 6.7 to 60, let alone 152 and has somewhat less oomph) s only returning 32 ish overall, and that's mostly on a 15 mile journey, none of which is stop / start driving and is mostly fast d/carriageways taken at 70. Mike.

I had one of them for a week - surprisingly good little car actually, and I did like the fuel consumption! It was small, slow and boring and it certainly didn't have any notable qualities other than being a box on wheels which got me from A to B.

It wasn't an Audi, and it wasn't a 2.0 Audi. Even though my 2.0 Audi isn't a 2.0 Sline Quattro - - -

If you buy a performance car, especially a petrol one, it really isn't reasonable to then whinge about the fuel consumption when it's used in a role better suited to something like a Polo, Micra or Yaris. Or a bus. At 30 miles a week, why not cycle or walk? Even assuming that 30 miles is just the commute to work, that's just 6 miles a day - the thing won't even have warmed up properly by the time it's parked at the end of the 3 mile journey! And I'm guessing much of that time is spent stuck in traffic as well.

Of all the performance cars I've owned, the Audi as standard sure as he'll wasn't the fastest, but it is definitely the most economical performance car I've owned. To make it even better, it's the safest, most well made car I've owned without a shadow of a doubt. Now it's stage 3, it's also one of the quickest.

Dammit that is pretty good in town I average about 18-22 and I drive pretty slow. I have had 2 runs with 24 avg my best in town I got was 27.49. Open road I get 36-38avg.

yer 6 miles a day it is - I am considering taking my bike into work in the summer
makes sense doing that! :)

lol def not warmed up, it's pretty consistent journey not much traffic
just a few traffic lights and annoying buses tbh
 
After owning a 2.0t hot 93 Aero a few years back, I have no complaints with the mpg from my 2.0t fwd bus even with the MTM stage 1 remap....it blows the old GM Aero away in so many ways! As everyone commented there is a pay off for having those 4 wheels spinning.....just a matter of whether your wallet can live with it or not I s'pose medium to long term!

Still a great wee car you have there.

yep exactly - I doubt my wallet can take this damage in the long term.... off to the petrol station I go!

I run mine on v power 99 Ron aswell. I found I got another 40 miles to £40. The car just generally behaves it's self aswell.

Completely unrelated post I know and sorry to go ot but to the op. You see youre steering wheel and gear knob? (And handbrake I'm assuming) the lighter parts are actually alcantara. Mine were smooth like this when I picked up the car but a hot damp cloth and a little bit of aggravation will see it nice and clean and fuzzy again.

My 2.5tdi Q Avant auto never goes below20 even in constant short local trips and it doubles that easily on a run.I would try warming it up quicker by blanking off part of the rad.Also things like those heated seats don't help if you leave them on high

A full major service mate, that would be where I would start. The air filter box on these tend to acquire a ridiculous amount of leaves. If it's not breathing properly this could be the problem. Worth a shot

Craig's right about the air filter box, plus there's a second filter down stream from the main one. It's a small gauze one, sits in the join between the two sections of the air intake trunking between the grill and the airbox. Often forgotten, and so nearly always full of stuff.

I didn't know about the second one, ill be investigating this one tomorrow as it seems I have nothing better do than strip my car at least once a week lol :)

Seens the air box isn't even fitted to the car I guess that screws up my Saturday...

yer tyre pressure is good

I put in £21 of the regular shell fuel on Friday and I've got the exact same amount of miles on my dashboard (110 miles) as I did this day last week

I will see how long this petrol lasts me till... If I can last till saturday with less than more than 15 miles then we'll know that the expensive shell petrol isn't good for short journeys
 
Basically any big petrol engine is poor on fuel on short runs.
Wifes old merc 3.2 v6 auto in the winter through town when cold 12 mpg!, normal 25 and on a run 31 at best.
Her 3.0tdi quattro, averages 30 ish all the time and mid 40s on a run, she is amazed how far it goes on a tank full compared to the merc.
As mentioned above ref the gauze filter, hers was blocked solid

Oh, and if you have left a dead body in the boot, remove it. The extra weight does fuel consumption no favours. :laugh:

Thanks I don't normally keep these bodies in the back, instead I get rid of em as soon as possible to save fuel

nice car, I wish i had a quattro :( mines a 2.0t auto and it costs about £35 to do between 140-160 miles on country driving, so around town your mpg is prob ok. Doing 70mpg i tend to get getting close to 34mpg.
