So I've recently got hold of a '93 MR2 for cheap off a mate who was gonna scrap it anyway. It needs a bit of work doing on it and I'm planning on selling up once I've fixed it up (month or two). The exhaust setup is how I got the car. It has a Remus motorcycle silencer hanging at the back and nothing else but pipework prior to that and yes I admit it is pretty damn noisy.

Anyway yesterday I pulled it out the garage and parked it on the driveway as I had to do a bit of work on the Audi, it took me about 5 mins to move the noisy MR2. After I'd finished the work (around 8:30pm) I then proceeded to move the MR2 back into the garage. Now there is a slight issue with the throttle sticking open slightly causing the revs to hold at ~2000rpm when it should be idling. So as I reversed into the garage about (3-5mins of noise all in all), my next door neighbour comes storming out his front door and walks up straight into my driveway shouting and swearing asking me which door I want him to key! I carry on reversing in to my garage where he follows the car in and attempts to remove the key from the ignition whilst continuing to shout abuse about him not moving in to live next door to a garage and me not being a commercial garage etc.

I then switch the car off and kept my cool (I am quite a patient individual). I explained to him that I simply had to move the car (which has it's issues) into the garage and it was only half 8 in the evening not midnight. He then keeps his raised voice and goes on about how I should get a silencer fitted, me not being a mechanic, my garage isn't a commercial property etc. A resident who lives across the road was walking by and asked if we could keep the shouting (not the car) down as his baby is sleeping. So you can imagine how loud he must have been. I explained to the passer by that I wasn't the one raising my voice and my neighbour then told them "P**s off, I don't need a fu**ing audience!". After my mother and girlfriend came out the house with all the shouting going on he lowered his tone slightly and starting telling my mum to sort me out. He didn't let me speak at this point and kept saying he doesn't want to talk to me. Eventually I then told him I'm aware of how noisy it is and I'm not trying to be a nuisance to him, we are neighbours after all and apologised offering a handshake. He reluctantly shook my hand and insisted there'd be no more of it and went back home.

Now just to add, his tolerance for noise must be fairly low as last year I was screwing a frame onto the wall (which is between our houses) on a Sunday afternoon (~4pm) and he came storming round asking how long I'm gonna be drilling into HIS wall for as he can't stand the noise. I then said I'll be done in 30mins or so and he just walked back off grumbling. His youngest child is about 16 years old so he hasn't got any kids to put asleep mid-afternoon or anything like that. I've also heard him drilling/shouting in the past and when he was having his bathroom/kitchen done but never complained once about any of it. Some other residents have accused him of being a racist, but I'm not one to judge people on things I don't know.

I just wanted an outside view on this situation as I'm not sure if I'm being selfish here or if he just has anger management issues. I work in my garage quite a lot due to my interest in cars and my bike etc. Just seems a bit unfair to me that I have to hold back so much to account for other people. Legally speaking I can do so until 11:30pm I think (not that I ever would). I mean I do consider my actions but I just think it's a bit too extreme sometimes.

Any advice or views (against me if you like) are welcome.

Thanks, Az.

I don't see that you have done anything wrong (apart from perhaps buying an MR2). Some people (your neighbour) just don't know how to live with other people or realise that living with neighbours also means that sometimes they (you) are going to do stuff that perhaps irritate you (your neighbour) but they (you) are not being unreasonable. Some people just haters!

Sounds like you got a right one there!!

If you are of asian background, just use the age old, get mum to make him a curry and take it round trick, that will keep him sweet and no more complaints!! LOL

Its worked for lots of people I know, however on a serious note, I try to be a nice person and not try and put people out, but at the same time, wont be made a fool out of, so if its a genuine situation, then you are well within your rights to carry on doing as you wish, as for the drilling, that does take the pee, as you say he has had work done and you could have kicked up a right fuss then, but being the nice neighbour you are, you let it be.

Out of interest, what part of Leicester are you in??

I got it dirt cheap! I'm not really into these noisy exhausts anyway but I don't wanna change it as it came with the car and I don't want it to affect my profit margin. If I was keeping it, I may well think of getting it changed.

Curry! Why didn't I think of that haha!

LOL....give it a try, you never know :)

If you had CCTV set up outside your house your neighbour wouldn't have a leg to stand on with the way he behaved in that instance -

Trespassing on your property?
Attempted car-jacking?
Public order offence?

Sounds like the sort of thing my next neighbour would do - he was the sort that popped footballs if they went over into his garden into his precious flower beds- but it's quiet okay for their cats to walk all over my car scratching my paint work and keeping me up at night fighting in the street!

And I suspect doing their business in your garden

Its a tough one he sounds a nightmare neighbour, but on the other hand its not good to fall out, as things then only esculate,
I would just explain you are not causing a nuisance to upset him in anyway, but you have a hobby that involves engines but will try to keep it at a minimum...

Or the Curry sounds good..:hi:

Yeah most probably....I live in the countryside though so foxes/badgers/rabbits all probably leave there business in there as well

I just listed the things that are important to me though- gardening is not one of them; got another 40 years till that's on my hobbies list! lol

Would witnesses not suffice on this instance?

They would yes mate, but as mentioned above by others you want to make as little fuss about it as possible.

IF this bloke phones the council/police up about that event then there's some ammo to throw back at them - because he most definitely over reacted to your exhaust and physically trying to remove your keys from your car!!

Who does he think he is? I would have gone mental at that point so fair play for you in keeping your cool.

The nights will be getting lighter soon so that will also help with the matter as it doesn't feel as late when it's still light come 8pm

I had a proper, proper loud exhaust on my old Subaru and then on my GTR.
Which I kept garaged so when starting up, it was pretty loud and vibrated my house and the neighbours.
I always let her know when I was going to be taking the car out. And always let her know if I was going on a track day the night before so she was at least aware.
I don't think your neighbour would care if you gave him notice to be honest as he just wants a "quiet" street.
Next time you are going to move the car, let him know with an apology. You're not using the car on a regular basis so might, just might placate him if the noise is not too much for too long

Haters guna hate. When I lived in a block of flats I used to get my elderly neighbour complaining about my TV being too loud, I couldn't actually hear it If I turned it down any further and I have pretty good hearing, some people just have to complain.

Got to admit after reading this, I have amazing neighbors!, despite living down a quiet road. The old couple to my left are a long retired couple, but if I attempt any noisy car work outside the house, I will inform the, but they said it's ok, so long as it's not in the middle of the night! Their drive is quite long also, they said I can park my cars there if space is tight. Neighbors to my right are hardly in, but they said I'm welcome to use their block paved drive anytime, so it looks active!, which I did today, as I had to manouver 4 different cars to swop cars in my garage. :)
I've had Ferrari's and GTRs come visit me in the day, no issues at all. The neighbors only comment is, is that your new motor?, my reply is, I ****** wish!

At the point he went for your keys I would of inserted them keys in one of his facial holes. If your a bit more patient than me, then I would of Waited until he started ranting at me and then counted to 3 outloud , then proceeded to protect myself, family and property to how I deemed fit.
And that is in all seriousness, your house is where you are meant to do as you please and feel safe , no one has the right to take that away from you mate.

It sounds like he's bang out of order to me. My neighbours are alright, a bit annoying but could be worse. In turn I try to be ok with them with my cars and music etc.

I can just imagine him telling me where to go and causing a nuisance again not letting me move it anywhere etc. even if I asked him nicely.

No curries for anyone I'm afraid Jeff, unless I owe them a favour ofcourse. ;)

I wouldn't say I felt threatened by him personally, but I think alot of people may have felt that way in that situation. I did have a 1/2" Halfords Professional torque wrench lying on the other side of the garage however...:uhm:

Couldn't of kept my calm like that so well done really!

Yea I've always been the most patient one in my entire family, but that doesn't necessarily make it a good thing.

I don't know how you managed to keep your cool especially when he threatened to key your car.

I wasn't too fussed about the car as it wasn't the Audi, but the principal still stands I suppose.

Next time your moving your MR2 get a good few of your mates around, that way he will see if he starts again you could quite easy have a load of mates round sharpish to give you back up, he might think twice next time instead of overreacting! shame mate i feel for you, ive moved once before because of neighbours and barking blooming dogs. Hope it all blows over.

This thread is amazing.

I don't get how things like this happen to people.

The words f**k and off would have been swiftly used with him getting frog marched off my drive I'm afraid. Unfortunately it sounds like you've got the gob ****e village idiot as a neighbour.
I don't have patients for people like that, you haven't done a thing wrong but I'd fight fire with fire. Get round there whenever he is doing anything you can hear and give him a taste of his own medicine.

You did the right thing by not getting involved and you took the moral high ground. The next time he behaves like this, phone the police and report him for threatening you.

The last thing you want to do is get involved as it could end up with both of you being charged with a public order offence.

I can totally relate to your situation as I have a bellend for a next door neighbour as well who behaved in a similar fashion last August (in front of my kids I might add). He threatened to drag me over my car and do all sorts to me. I laughed in his face and walked away as I wasn't going to get involved.

9 times out of 10 these people are all mouth and no trousers:lmfao:

i get the same from my neighbours
yesterday they called the local plod on me again
reason was id parked a 44 ft lorry on the road in front of my house
they dont have a drive so didnt block anything.
police turned up and told them theres nothing they can do as i was parked legaly.
they have reported me to the local council saying im always fixing cars on the drive i dont my cars go to the garage
they did take pictures twice of the window tinter doing his job on the drive tho.
i just ignore them and let them get on with it.

tbh if he comes on to your property kicking off been aggressive your well with in your right to put him on his back...

we had chew with neighbors for years, both sides! it took my dad and i to give them loads of verbal now they just stay quiet and don't have anything to say any more.

just run him over anyway, while hes walking down the street with his back turned!

Next time, just 'blip' the throttle, and say to him 'I'm sorry, I can't hear a word you are saying!?'

Your neighbour sounds like the bellend that lives next door to me who doesn't like our gardener cutting out lawn at the rear of the house before 9am.

He tried complaining to the council so he reckoned but this was a load of bullshy, after many times of him complaining we rang the council to see where we stood. Basically, they laughed at this tosser. As the lady their has a gardener who starts at 7:30. My neighbour was complaining as Saturday was the only day he gets to have a lie in which I would have thought every man & his dog normally would do this on a Sunday?
So he was expecting us not to have our Gardener start until after 9am, but he has other house he has to fit in which in the winter is not possible to start that late!

One Saturday we had to report him to the police as he had a shouting match just before 9am which went on for 15mins & during this his wife joined in screaming like a banshee & one of his sons threw a banana at the gardener (who is Spanish).
My neighbour has not got on well with my gardener since he used to work for my neighbour, as my neighbour reckons he dismissed my gardener as he kept turning up late, but my gardener said he quit due to him not liking their dog.

The Police said if my neighbour or his kids, or whoever from that family throws a banana at our gardener again we have to report them as it can be classed a a race/hate crime.
Apparently their had been previous complaints made either about my neighbour or his wife & it has been commented that the is a bit of a nutter, so if you want East Yorkshire Council to do you a swap with my neighbours. I would rather have A4_Majik next door to me than my current a*holes despite them being quite for the past 4/5 months.

Sign up to twobrutal. Offer your bike exhaust free to collector or swap for oem silencer. Pretty sure somebody on there will be outing one.

They do tend to idle high when cold. Should have been given a mk1 though I assume yours is a mk2?

Ignore the neighbour he sounds a fool. 11pm is the noise cut off iirc.

Some people have a natural tendency to be miserable, and they find justification and proof all around them to continue to feel this way. My neighbors are the same way. My child can't even play without thumping on the floor, or they will come and yell over it. I can't help how people feel or how they respond. My intention isn't to be rude, or self-centered, and if someone takes my actions that way it is their weight to carry and not mine. I will certainly apologize for having been a burden on someone, but I have long let go of the need to carry the weight for people. It would seem he is a person that will find something to grumble about regardless of what you do, so don't stress the man so much. Continue to smile and be cordial, but don't stress his adult baby fits.

Sounds fine what you do and approached the situation well.

Your neighbour just sounds like a right nob.

My neighbours are pretty good although the one joined to us seemed immune to there alarm. The alarm woudl start from anywhere as early from 4am and would be going off for upto 40mins. Now I get up early anyway so didn't bother me too much but disturbed my few month old son in the next room! So 1 sunday it was going off at 6-15 and at 6-30 I'd had enough, knocked on the door until he got up. Explained that we hear it clear as day and disturbs my son and not heard it since. I think he may of been a little embarrassed by the situation, late 30's man being told off by a mid 20's lad but we still say hello when passing.

There's always a polite way of approaching a situation and your neighbour doesn't seem to know this.
