So I've recently got hold of a '93 MR2 for cheap off a mate who was gonna scrap it anyway. It needs a bit of work doing on it and I'm planning on selling up once I've fixed it up (month or two). The exhaust setup is how I got the car. It has a Remus motorcycle silencer hanging at the back and nothing else but pipework prior to that and yes I admit it is pretty damn noisy.
Anyway yesterday I pulled it out the garage and parked it on the driveway as I had to do a bit of work on the Audi, it took me about 5 mins to move the noisy MR2. After I'd finished the work (around 8:30pm) I then proceeded to move the MR2 back into the garage. Now there is a slight issue with the throttle sticking open slightly causing the revs to hold at ~2000rpm when it should be idling. So as I reversed into the garage about (3-5mins of noise all in all), my next door neighbour comes storming out his front door and walks up straight into my driveway shouting and swearing asking me which door I want him to key! I carry on reversing in to my garage where he follows the car in and attempts to remove the key from the ignition whilst continuing to shout abuse about him not moving in to live next door to a garage and me not being a commercial garage etc.
I then switch the car off and kept my cool (I am quite a patient individual). I explained to him that I simply had to move the car (which has it's issues) into the garage and it was only half 8 in the evening not midnight. He then keeps his raised voice and goes on about how I should get a silencer fitted, me not being a mechanic, my garage isn't a commercial property etc. A resident who lives across the road was walking by and asked if we could keep the shouting (not the car) down as his baby is sleeping. So you can imagine how loud he must have been. I explained to the passer by that I wasn't the one raising my voice and my neighbour then told them "P**s off, I don't need a fu**ing audience!". After my mother and girlfriend came out the house with all the shouting going on he lowered his tone slightly and starting telling my mum to sort me out. He didn't let me speak at this point and kept saying he doesn't want to talk to me. Eventually I then told him I'm aware of how noisy it is and I'm not trying to be a nuisance to him, we are neighbours after all and apologised offering a handshake. He reluctantly shook my hand and insisted there'd be no more of it and went back home.
Now just to add, his tolerance for noise must be fairly low as last year I was screwing a frame onto the wall (which is between our houses) on a Sunday afternoon (~4pm) and he came storming round asking how long I'm gonna be drilling into HIS wall for as he can't stand the noise. I then said I'll be done in 30mins or so and he just walked back off grumbling. His youngest child is about 16 years old so he hasn't got any kids to put asleep mid-afternoon or anything like that. I've also heard him drilling/shouting in the past and when he was having his bathroom/kitchen done but never complained once about any of it. Some other residents have accused him of being a racist, but I'm not one to judge people on things I don't know.
I just wanted an outside view on this situation as I'm not sure if I'm being selfish here or if he just has anger management issues. I work in my garage quite a lot due to my interest in cars and my bike etc. Just seems a bit unfair to me that I have to hold back so much to account for other people. Legally speaking I can do so until 11:30pm I think (not that I ever would). I mean I do consider my actions but I just think it's a bit too extreme sometimes.
Any advice or views (against me if you like) are welcome.
Thanks, Az.
