Hi guys and girls.

In 2 minds which to go for; tracker or GAP.
Anyone else had this thought and which did you go for in the end?
Tried a few insurance companies and they don't seem to pass on a discount for trackers now plus do I want the car back if some low life half inches it. Is GAP giving up too easy on your pride and joy if it is stolen.

Don't forget about 'gps jammers' which make trackers useless.

Well if there is jammers and they are effective then I think the GAP is the easy to go. Damn site cheaper too

I had the same debate when I was looking at buying my A3.

Phoned the dealer of the car I was looking at, asked a few questions, showed no interest in road side assistance/GAP etc, said I'd get back to them.

Few days later the salesman phoned me back and offered me GAP f.o.c to sweeten the deal, along with a couple other things. I had already decided it was the car for me, just had a busy few days and wasn't able to phone him! Lucky I didn't!

I got GAP for free from Audi, supposedly £500's worth for 36 months of cover. Thought it was alright to be honest!

Yeah I mean GAP is good if you have to use it. If you got it free then it's even better. Think I'll probably go down that route to be honest. Thanks for the comments

I think fitting trackers is old tech now, insurance companies don't seem bothered and like a few people have said its useless once a jammer sets in or if it gets put into a container/big warehouse!

Yeah the insurance companies don't seem too warrant them now. The tracker locate has a feature where it can still be tracked in containers and underground car parks. Does your average Joe thief carry a tracker jammer, I'm not sure but swaying off the idea now anyway.

I've just got gap cover for £500 which covers me for 4 years. Not to scare you Andy but I had my java green s3 stolen last year and I wish I had Gap cover then. IMO a tracker is not bad but as you say would you want your raped car back afterwards that is a big IF they find it.

That bad thing is mate if they want your car they will get it the c**ts. They went as far as entering my property.
Save your money on a tracker and just get a big ugly steering lock just to delay them.. Just an idea lol

Im am fully prepared incase something was to happen again.
Be safe fellow peeps

£500, that's steep.

I'm looking at return to invoice GAP just now with 5 years cover for £200 on a £20,000 S3.

I agree £500 is very pricey!!

Try ALA on t'interweb as I got a return to invoice cost on my brand new 2012 S3(£31K) for 4 years for just under £200.

Ok so I have had GAP Insurance on both my cars as it was always part of the deal. I told them I did want it but would walk away if it wasn't included...

It's nice to have that life-line in the event something happens, especially if you're in the first year or two of a Finance Plan when you're usually in negative equity (If you put down a low deposit). basically if the car is a write off your finance company usually makes you cough up the remainder of the car within a certain time as there is now no asset. If your insurance doesn't pay full value then you have to pay up.

Little bit different if you own the car outright but still, you don't want to worry about losing money!

Every car I have / have owned has always had a decent reliable tracker. I want to know where my car is at all times, if it moves without my keys being inserted etc. If it does get stolen it will get recovered and hopefully not trash my insurance premiums until i'm 90. It gives you that real piece of mind!

Jammers - Most decent systems nowadays have a revolving signal as well as GSM communication so that if it something like that happens it can kick out an instant alarm which would trigger a Police call out depending on the call centre.

We have always used Scorpion. British brand, well made and does pretty much all the above! Fit loads of them nowadays on certain vehicles you have to have them to be insured.

My insurance company didn't give me a reduction as I'm still under 25 but to be honest, I drive a Premium brand vehicle so just have to expect that Im gonna be paying a bit for insurance. Having a tracker is piece of mind.

On a side note, all our vehicles here use Scorpion Fleet Management!

Just been on the website. £208 for 4 years. Will wait till they ring me later and see if they can do it a bit cheaper as I may have got some cheaper quotes by then

I contemplated a tracker system and decided against.

Would I really want my car back after someone stole it?

I opted for gap insurance with ala. Think it was £140 as opposed to £350 MINI wanted!

I know this is Audi forum but same principle

Trackers are a waste of money and can generally be disabled in minutes by the pros.

Spending the money improving your home security would be my first priority.

I agree. Live in a top floor apartment though so home security isn't really an option for me.

I have GAP and a Cobra Tracker fitted by Audi. If I'm honest, if it gets stolen they can keep it. Trying to sell a stolen and recovered car would be a pain plus is reduces the value.

Far rather have the amount I paid for the car back from the insurance company and move on...

Thanks for the ALA advice. Only down the road from me. £128 for 3 years so I'd highly recommend them.

Insurance companies will only insure certain motors if you have a Tracker device installed

If I could afford one of those certain cars I wouldn't be worrying about which to go for lol
