Audi Sound system vs B&O System

Thanks very much Vertigo - that'd be great! Though any chance you could stick it on a CD instead of a DVD, or even just send across the files if that's easier? I went without the Tech Pack so I don't have a DVD drive.

I'm picking it up this afternoon - colour me excited! :D

Afraid not. Whilst I could possibly rip the audio from it and convert it into a format for CD, it would just be basic stereo. The B&O will do 5.1 DTS and DD surround but only from an actual DVD I'm afraid.

So I suppose this means that if you buy a B&O sound system and no tech pack, you are paying for 5.1 that you will never use?

Cheers,

Karl.

Yes .. but people with B&O and no tech pack, have confirmed the sound is still superb on this basis, so a worthy upgrade with or without tech pack.

Looks like we posted at the same time - I'd second this. I got goosebumps the first time I heard Bohemian Rhapsody with the bass and the sub both turned up to about 75% :D and that was over bluetooth streaming!

Disclaimer: I'm a noob at audio tech. Can't you get 5.1 files on SD cards? If you Google "5.1 test file" the first page you'll find is a link to a WMA, which you've said is supported, Vertigo1.

I can certainly test the file but, from what I can gather, it will only decode AC3 and DTS from DVDs, no other source. I did try creating a CD with DTS audio on it but it didn't want to know.

I have B&O and I listen to all my music from an iPod. The files are all in AAC lossless which eats up storage but is worth it. I would prefer FLAC but not supported. I find the sound quality to be excellent much better than the Harmon Kardon I had in my 3 series. The detail is impressive

Interesting to see that the new VW Dynaudio SubWoofer for the MK7 Golf looks suspiciously identical to the B&O in the boot of my A3:

Dynaudio - All there is.

VW have also said the Golf isn't available with a Spare Wheel if you choose Dynaudio - think the A3 gets the better deal there! Starting to wonder what we get extra on B&O (£750) compared to the Dynaudio (£500) if the components are near enough identical!

Do you have the same number of speakers in the golf?

The Audi Sound System sub also looks identical and that's only £250! I thinks this sits between Audi Sound and B&O. No doubt we're probably paying for the name a bit with B&O though.

Hi all. New to the forum so hope I'm posting in the correct area but just wondered if anyone can help with a B&O sound problem I think I have!!! In my previous A4 I had the B&O sound system and thought it sounded amazing. Great clarity and terrific high quality bass. So, when purchasing my new 2013 A3 hatchback I had no hesitation in having the B&O system installed. Oh My!!!...to say I am disappointed would be a massive understatement!!!. It sounds good when the car is not moving!! but in motion it just sounds like a cheap car system!!! Bass all but completely disappears appears from the "THUD, THUD" of the sub in the boot....where is the bass!!!! This lack of hardly any audible bass just makes for a very "middy, tinny" sounding system. I was so convinced that this was a problem with the system that I returned the car to Audi and was given a courtesy car that had the Audi system fitted. FAR, FAR BETTER. Bass is defined (and most of all, audible!!!). On collection of my car I was told there is no problem with the sound system so I am back to the inferior sounding B&O system. Anyone else experiencing this with the B&O or has anyone any ideas of what the problem may be or how I might rectify it.?? I know this only an audio problem and I love my A3 but I have now resorted to the sound system being PERMANANTLEY TURNED OFF on my many long mileage Journeys!!!!

I assume it's a stupid question to ask if you've fiddled with the equalizers?

No bass on the B&O?! That's definitely a fault. I would ask to try another car with B&O at the dealer and do a comparison. What source are you using to play the music?

The bass in the B&O makes the Audi Sound System pale into insignificance, so if you noticed it in the Audi Sound System then you should definitely notice it in the B&O.

I'd second that, it's either an issue with the media you're playing (try a CD instead of an ipod or SD card) or an issue with your B&O as mine is really bassy even on the move, to the point where I feel like i have to turn it down a little as I'm quite self conscious of sounding like a total boy racer ...

All in all, the bass on B&O is very powerful to say the least.

The first time I took mine out on the open road and listened to Bohemian Rhapsody the bass made my seats shake!

I tend to turn down the subwoofer and turn up the bass since I get self-conscious about the thud too (unless I've got on the 1812 overture).

That was my thought as well; to my ears the B&O doesn't sound great "out of the box," you need to do a bit of tweaking to get the best out of it. For me that's treble down a few notches, sub up a few notches and bass near the top, although obviously we all have our own personal preference.

With regard to the Audi/B&O/Dynaudio subs I wonder if VAG just produce a standard case that fits all three? I can't imagine B&O or Dynaudio would put their name to something they hadn't developed?

Thanks to all for your comments on this. I'm gonna go to Audi and see if I can test drive another A3 with B&O fitted. I defo think there is a problem somewhere . My Eq settings are as follows:-
Sub woofer - flat
Bass - Full
Treble - flat
Gala +2

Even friends who have been in car with me comment on the poor quality of the A3 B&O audio system!!! Just think it can't be right for B&O!!...will let you know the ultimate outcome guys when I have tried another vehicle.
Thanks again for your posts.
best
Charlie

i'm pretty sure that they have resolved this issue now and you can have both. I had a listen to the Dynaudio system in a Golf GTD (whilst parked only) and was very impressed by the sound, so much so that I went and spec'd it for my wife's car. I had the B&O system in my A5 (58 plate) but was never particularly impressed by it, always considered B&O to be a triumph of style over function. However when trying the S3 I drove two cars, a manual and an S-tropic. The former had the Audi speaker package and the latter the B&O. Having got used to B&O in the A5 I felt that the Audi package sounded muddy in comparison. However, when I turned up the B&O system in the second S3 it sounded cleaner but not terribly powerful. Admittedly we were only listening to the radio at the time though and hadn't exactly taken the time to set the system up.

The B&O in the A5 according to the spec isn't as powerful as in the A3 500 vs 705 watt I think . Loved B&O in 2 Audis previously hence a vital option. Really don't think Audi sound system compares and the base system is really poor. Just my 2p

So so so glad ive chosen this on my car, literally went from looking at the car one day being completely standard, to adding many options including the B&O system.

Part of the LED interior light pack. The B&O logo as well as the strip is illuminated.

Really? I understood it is the interior light pack that lights even the speakers.

You don't get the speaker lights unless you have b&o, they talk specifically about the lights when reading sections about b&o too. I'm quite sure it's that option you need to select!

Yes, my understanding was that they came with the B&O speakers, not the interior light pack. Would still recommend speccing both though! :)

I can confirm B&O lights are with the B&O option.
i don't have interior light pack, but do have front speakers lit up.
Didn't realise they lit up until I got the car, welcome surprise.

Thanks for clearing that up, sorry for sticking up the wrong info.

I was listening to Donna Summer / "I Feel Love" on the Radio with my Bang & Olufsen. I had goosebumps from the pure quality and the loudness of it all. I was in quite a hurry but in fact I was so impressed that I had to listen to the whole song.

Needless to say, I find B&O incredible !

Ok i ordered my 3doors S3 3 weeks ago with Audi SoundSystem but i hope I can change it into B&O.... I'm a audio freak!
Question: I only ordered the MMI radio without connectivity pack & GPS. Can I play nice music through my Iphone (Spotify)?? Via AUX? (where is it located in the car?)

Can you really stream it without connectivity pack? Or without phone option? So you can also see the track name / artist/ on MMI?

yep standard MMI does stream and displays track info on the MMI, unless I got an upgrade that I did not pay for

Find it strange.... Can anyone else confirm this please & thx for your reply Dave!

There's no such thing as a connectivity package in the UK, bluetooth is standard on all models, and it does show all this info yes.
