Hi guys, my car is the fwd 1.8tfsi and I noticed the oil is at the lower end of the stick , not quite at the lowest mark but kinda close .

The car has done 4700kms and was max when I got it. I am a bit concerned with this amount of consumption.

My car didn't come with a bottle of top up oil and my dealer is no help.

Do you guys know what oil is currently in my engine so I could buy a quart to top up? Brand/viscosity ?

And did any of you guys experience this level of consumption ?

Thanks again for the advice
Karl

The handbook only has a range of grades I can use based on temperature , it doesn't tell me what grade is in the engine neither the brand (the oil cap does have Castrol written on it)

I think you will find the most common oils used by dealers in the UK are as follows, depending on if it is a petrol engine or a diesel engine and if it is set for Longlife services:

Castrol Edge 0w-30 meets VW 502.00 / 503.01 / 505.00

Castrol Edge Turbo Diesel 5W-40 meets VW 505.01

Castrol Edge 5W-30 meets the new VW 504.00 and 507.00

Shell Helix Ultra VX 5w-30 also meets 504.00 and 507.00

According to the chap who was my guide when I had a factory tour of Ingolstadt the cars leave with the engines filled with special 'new engine' synthetic oil which should be left in until the first service and just topped up with the appropriate synthetic oil from the list above.

Hope this helps.

Stealer sold me this , will use some of it if the level gets closer to minimum before I hit 5000kms (service)

I think they were 'pulling your leg' Dave. I had heard that one but apparently it's a little 'story' they tell which now seems to have become folklore!

The chap who took us on the tour was the senior guide who had worked at the factory for many years and he was showing us round all afternoon on a one-to-one basis and not the normal group tour. It was on our second visit to Ingolstadt back in 2007 and things may have changed since then, but he did not seem the type of person to tell lies. I think I would rather believe him than you on this one.

I have also had an Audi Master Tech say to me that the oil in a new engine is different and should not be drained and replaced until at least the first service. He said that people who drain the oil and replace it after the first 5,000 miles are doing more harm than good.

The oil in my eight A3s has always been left in there until their first 'variable service' at around 18-19k with no harm that I'm aware off.

Well if you are leaving it till 18, 19k .. are you topping up? Or you have zero oil burn issues ?

I usually check the oil level once every couple of weeks and only very occasionally do I need add a small amount. Even when I go on holiday doing around 1500 miles in Europe it still does not need any top-up.

What engine have you got in your A3?

I have the 1.8 TFSI. Done 2000 miles now and not needed to top up yet. The dealer told me I shouldn't need to top up if I ran the car in as recommended in the manual, which I did. That said, I don't know if your hot climate may make a difference.

Ok thanks Tim will do another check and pic of the oil level , I feel the oil it came with may be a bit too thin for my climate.

Did you not get any top up oil with your car? Mine was supplied with some in the boot...

Did not get my top up bottle with the car , but it turned out my oil level wasn't that low , it was just hard to see the level on the stick, I checked a few times after and it was fine
