Engine rebuild required on a B8 @68k

At least the seat dealer wasn't aware of the problem. You might wanna give an idea of what the car looked like so nobody on here buys one that looks similar,

Has everyone got the aux input under the armrest to connect an iPod? Mine just hisses though the music comes through the hissing spoils it.... Any thoughts

Guys I have just read some of this thread. It makes very disappointing reading.it seems to me Audi have become so complacent because of their market share.People will only put up with poor service for so long .I would write to what car and other mags creating as much negative publicity as possible.
I have moved from Audi after 10 years, having owned 4 a4s albeit one only stayed a month due to poor paint. My B8 had new front wings a new rear shock, engine mount, and was on its fourth flywheel,it had only done 60000 miles, vorsprung dutch technik-nein.

No sorry, I have ami with an iPod Dock in the glovebox and phone dock in the armrest can't wait to get an iPhone 5s cradle for it

In the end I ended up trading mine in for a brand new Seat Leon. It's quite a bit different to the A4 but it's alot cheaper to run and comes with a 3 year warranty. It's my wife that uses it most of the time anyway so it's ideal for her and its got some decent kit in it.

Audi wern't interested in my car using a litre of oil every 400 - 500 miles Because I didnt buy it from them and one of the services wasn't done by them. No goodwill would be offered at all and I couldn't afford the cost of a potentil rebuild so it left me no choice but to trade it in. It'sa shame because I really did like the car and with its modifications it was a quick car.
Sorry to hear that mate. I feel really gutted for you.

Think im at about 1200miles from having it. Missus reset the odometer, grrrrrr. About half down on MMI, so will need a top up. My make shift dipstick is showing a few mm's down too. Though this is withing audis limits (without checking in the manual) and well above every 400miles. If it stays like this (i really hope so) ill be happy.

I have to say, that since my engine rebuild, the oil consumption is now what it should be and the car has alot more power down low, (probably down to a ecu update) and sounds alot more meatier as well. Plus my tailpipes don't get covered in soot now. It's like a different car now!!!!

An update on my drain in life.... The Audi dealers have had my car for nearly 1 month now and I've had a 2.0Tdi Audi TT courtesy car which is great but has been a bit of a problem with space! Anyway, the pistons have been done, con rod replaced and what ever else, just a few final checks apparently and road test by them and the car will be ready to collect either tomorrow or 2nd Jan.

The reason I wanted the work doing at Audi so much is for the paperwork, 2 year guarantee, and resale value, at least if I have any further problems I can just mither Audi about it, I even rang around and no where could do this repair for any lower than £1900, the lowest price I got was £2500 ex vat. Also if ever it comes to light that Audi do honor these repairs and do them for free, I plan on claiming it back!

I asked Audi if they could change the cam belt whilst carrying out this work but apparently my engine has a chain not a cam belt.

Does anyone know how much it would be to get new chrome tail pipes or if Audi would have replaced them with the repair? I presume they are knackered as they have always been black and I have never seen any chrome bits on them since I owned the car in September. After all they are only knackered because of Audi! ;o/

Can't wait to get it back, I have missed it so much, I just hope this has rectified the problem and I can finally enjoy the car! It seemed ironic that I've just had to buy 6 months road tax whilst not actually having the car and only physically having it on my drive 6 weeks out of 3 months of owning it. I've driven 3 courtesy cars in that duration more than my own car!! Grrrrrr.

That's a long time to wait! But as you said, its guaranteed and you may even be able to claim back one day.

One nice thing I read is that this engine has a cam chain, I was fully expecting a big bill next year to have the cam belt done.

Hope you get her back this week.

Interested to know on the tail pipes too, mine need a good clean or be changed for new.

I purchased a second hand car from a Audi dealership 3 months ago, and since day 1 the car has constantly had to go back to service centre to have various faults repaired.
In the last 3 months I have been to the dealership 8 times (yes 8), one of the visits required me to be without my newly purchased 2nd hand car for up to a month.
On receiving the car, the parts and labour to have car fixed equalled the amount I spent to purchase the car!!!!

The 2,3,4 and 5th visit I had to continually return for one fault which each repair only lasting no more then 2 days.
In order to finally fix the problem, I had to ask the dealer a rhetorical question. (I did not want the dealership thinking I am telling them what to do)- result after the fault finally was fixed properly!!

So by this time, with all parts & labour done, they spent well over the price I purchased the car now.
Then a few days later, I kept monitoring oil consumption and notice on MMI Oil level is dropping at a alarming rate, more then what spec in owners manual state.

Had to bring car again to service centre 7th and 8th time for them to conduct a stage 1 oil consumption test.
results came in failed the test.
Now up to service centre to decide what to do next to repair the fault.
In my short experience with Audi, it has been a calamity of errors, and a pain going back & forth fixing faults. When ever I see a Audi on road, Im thinking nice looking car, but "do you have same problem as me??"

Regarding the oil consumption problem " this is a world wide issue,(USA,Britain,Australia, Europe, South Africa).
Just google the issue and you receive almost a million entries. They even have a Facebook page dedicated to the problem.

Why dont Audi " take responsibility since this fault came straight out of there factory, Audi should repair the problem hassle free & compensate there customer for the time taken to do this...

I hope Audi can step up and make me not regret me purchase.

I've asked Audi that same question and the only thing I can say is, because it is not a safety issue, they will not recall the fault. The guy who is handling my case at Audi uk says that the faults are such a small percentage compared to all the thousands of cars sold it isn't a fault with every car. The cost of repairing all of the cars with this fault would amount to millions of pounds and hundreds of hours labour it is such a major, time consuming repair.

In short, I know very little about cars but have learnt so much about this car in the last 3 months. If you read all the way through is thread and on the net, you'll see the same story's throughout. 2.0T Fsi 2008-2011 ish engines, piston rings crack, one of the fixes seems to be that they have modified the size of the rings so the oil doesn't seep through or they don't crack and mix in with the fuel and burn through the engine. The only way Audi will ever step up is if they get taken to court and lose, then i think I'm right in saying, they would have to repair all vehicles that have this fault FOC. But I don't think Audi would ever let it get to that stage, bad press, risk element of losing etc.

Cheers ScottishS3! Not a bad price really!

Well I collected my car yesterday after a full engine rebuild, new head, pistons and con rod, only done a couple of miles in it so far but so far so good! I'm meant to take it easy in it for a while (can't remember how long they said for so if anyone has any idea what it could be then please let me know!) it feels odd driving it after driving a brand new Audi TT for almost a month but I am loving it being back!

Ah right, the guy told me I needed to run it in but I can't for the life of me remember how many miles he said. Like you say ill take it easy anyway.

Well it's normally around 2,000 miles on a new car (I could be wrong?).
It's hard to do as the exhaust makes such a nice sound now! ;)

I ran mine under 3000 rpm for the first 1000 miles. After the 1000 I slowly introduced hard acceleration through the rev range and let the engine run down ( engine braking). Each to their own, some go all out from the start. My first 5k after the repair was all motorway driving due to work with cruise set at 70. So IMO it had a good break in again with little town driving.

My next bill will be its service in April a year on from the repair and complete brake change disks and pads. (Picked up during its health check at the mot) I know it's routine but this has been quite an expensive car to run during my ownership. Wouldn't change it though as it drives faultlessly and has been the comfiest motorway mile muncher I've owned which is still fun in the twisty a roads.

Thanks for the advice guys on running it in, I am doing just that well under 3000rpm.

Anyway I've had the car back 5 days now. Just did a motorway journey yesterday, I would have thought mpg would be great, especially driving it sensibly an in 6th gear, I was getting 36.7mpg at the most. I also checked the MMI Oil level and to my frustration in around 220miles I have used just over 1/2 litre of oil. Worse than before.

I'll be on the phone to Audi UK on Monday. Any advise on how I should play this to get it sorted is welcome. I am gutted...

Have you done a total of 220 miles since the repair? I have learnt not to trust the mmi as gospel. How many times has the bonnet been up? Reason I ask as each time it's opened the car starts re measuring the oil. I found that when I resisted temptation to open the bonnet the mmi became more consistent over the more miles I covered with the reading. Mine now still has it ups and downs. For example 250 mile trip over Xmas the car got home with only 1/3 showing on the mmi. Drove the car again the next day and it was back up to 2/3?. Audi told me to use the mmi as a guide and to only add oil when the car says it needs it which will be 1L which is the measurement on the mmi.

Either way your work is covered by audis 2 year guarantee so if it's faulty hand it back to them. I will imagine they will ask you to cover a few more miles before they have it back.

All the best.

Thanks A4 for your reply. After today I've now done 280 miles total since the repair. I haven't had the bonnet up since the repair but when the engine warmed up this morning and I checked the reading it was at the 1/2 way point again so it has gone up again since last night.

Either way I'll be phoning the guy at Audi Uk to let him know their fix hasn't fixed it! I do wonder if they are going to tell me I have to run the engine in or something. Pffft, I kind of feel in a sticky situation at the moment, I wonder at what stage they are going to say it needs a new engine?

It's stiries like pebbles that put me off getting mine done. My mate still reckons just run it and keep putting oil in. But I just don't know

Pebble dasher, how did you get on with Audi today?

Hi A4, I never got chance to call them today, work took priority so couldn't make my gazillionth call to Audi. I'll be calling Audi UK tomorrow after a 140 mile round trip on the motorway to go and see a client (fingers crossed the oil lasts!) I'll let you know what they say! I bet I get told this is normal, let the engine run in, blah blah blah!

Jackie, I am so frustrated at it all but in hindsight, I now have a 2 year Audi guarantee for an eventuality like this, hopefully they will get it put right for me and be able to supply me with a new Audi courtesy car whilst they do any work, I also have the Audi paperwork for the resell value of the car to say the work has been done properly. If you don't get it done you might find the same thing that happened to me, you will get a carbon build up on the spark plugs (from the oil running though r engine) and this will cause it to misfire. I have also heard as well, it will effect the emissions for the MOT (can't confirm this) and can eventually damage the CAT converter.

Love the car -100%
Losing the will to live - 98%
Good time to quit smoking - No way, I want to scream!!

Ok, I rang Audi Uk today to update them on the oil loss after the piston change, the guy I spoke to said that he has had this before with other cars that have had the piston change and he has said that this is normal. He popped me on hold and confirmed it with the technical guys. He came back and said, until the engine has ran in it will use more oil, I can expect it to use more oil than normal for anything up to 3000 miles, it will get better and better throughout. I questioned it, 3000miles is a lot of miles to run an engine in but he assures me that it will get better. I mentioned that at £15 a litre of oil it is a lot to expect me to keep filling it up with oil for 3000miles and my concern was that this oil usage may be doing the engine harm, he said he has noted on the system that if I don't see any improvement soon I can call them back and they will investigate further and he said if I do encounter any other issues related to the repair, it will be covered by Audi for them to fix, I'm really happy with that response as long as he wasn't fobbing me off.

In fairness, my first long trip after the repair last week my mpg I struggled to hit 36mpg on the motorway, but today my motorway trip I hit 42mpg which I am well happy with, also on the 30mph drive home from work I hit 36 mpg which is good going. It was a real pleasure driving it today forgetting the oil usage. If Audi uk are right I will grin and bare it a little longer before I start taking it to them to fill my oil up every 500miles or so, I don't see why I should have to keep flushing through top grade engine oil just to run it in, as long as the mpg stays consistent and high end for the car, I'll have to live with it for now.

I guess I'm unlucky that the piston, con rod, engine breather and everything else change hasn't immediately made a massive difference but I'm following their advice right now as I know I'm now covered!

I'm keeping all receipts, a log of all my contacts I've made with Audi etc as I have always done and can honestly say, as annoyed as I am with Audi, I am very happy with where I have got to right now and the way I've been looked after. It has driven me into the ground, drained me of all my pleasure with the car and caused huge issues but I accept every company has problems from time to time, this is no exception but it is how a company deals with a problem that makes it easier to handle. I think they really need to be busted for this fault with the engine and should be liable for everything but until then the minions who work for the Brand have been a good help I suppose.

Quick question (on a different note) - if I have the key fob in the car with the engine running and I get out to open the boot, how on earth do I open the boot? There is no button inside the car to release the boot, only on the key fob thing?

Cheers fellow oily people! ;o)

If you own a Audi a4 B8, on the right hand side door there is a button with a "boot open sign". I feel for you as I have had the same issue with oil consumption. I just recently got a call from my dealership, that they got approval from Audi to go ahead with piston ring replacement.
Yes the car will consume a little more oil when new rings are placed to break in and let the rings settle in properly. With all the issues..the a4 is a very pleasing car to drive, just wished Audi had addressed this issues better knowing this fault came straight out of the factory and the user was not responsible. When they realised this problem they should of called customers have the fault repaired hassle & time free, instead of owners not spotting the problem to save the company money .

Fingers crossed pebble dasher. Looks like its heading in the right direction albeit with hurdles along the way. Keep us updated.

This time last year my head was banging against the wall with what to do. In the long run I believe its the right decision. And with yours it's audis issue now if the piston change hasn't worked.

Regards.

Hi Tony, thanks for that, I have the 2.0TFSi 211bhp B8 Avant, I've just checked again to check I wasn't going mad and there is no release button there, I'm baffled! Maybe mine is the model where when the engine is running I have to fold the back seat down to get into the boot as they ran out of buttons.

It is kind of a cheap tactic of Audi, if the customers complain honor a goodwill repair, if they don't complain charge what you can get away with! I really feel for the earlier generation of Audi owners who actually had to pay the full bill for the work.

Yeah defo, cheers A4! So 1 year on, would you say you are in a good place with your car?

Also, On a different note A4, have you managed to escape the floods where you are?

Yeah wouldn't change the car for anything now. I'll have it at least another year until the guarantee on the engine goes and I expect I'll be on or near 100k then. 20k to go....

Escaped most of the floods mate. Some water run off from the garden has flooded my garage but nothing major. Everything is extremely wet. The fields etc will take some drying out. Roads are coping ok with a few detours with flooding. Pots holes are the biggest issue now! How is has it been up North?

I have the same care as you pebble dasher and I see no boot release button..... But also, how do u open the petrol cap? May be a stupid question but I'm standing at the pump pressing all buttons on my fob for ages before finally and rather randomly it clicks open.

Hi Jackie

I think I can answer the boot release question if yours is like mine! Simply when the engine is off and the door is unlocked, press the petrol cap cover with your hand to release it and when you've filled up simply press it closed again! It wont release if the doors are locked.I know there are a dozen safety and security features on the car.. You can't release the electric handbrake without your seatbelt on or without pressing the footbrake, over 10mph the doors look. But you can play with a lot of these features in the MMI menu options.

Here is a useless feature you may not know about Jackie, if you press and hold your door open button on your fob, all the windows will open and vice-versa when you press and hold the lock key! (Presuming it is set up on the menu options). I guess you would only use this if there was a swarm of bees in the car on returning to it and you wanted them to leave quickly! Lol!

A4, sounds like you've had a lucky escape with the floods then, I'm pretty lucky here I guess, a few rather wet days and really windy days where a few trees have blown over but nothing too bad! We always seem pretty sheltered here! I imagine the pot holes are a killer, especially if you've got the sports suspension and low profile tyres like mine. Well hopefully the other band of bad weather isn't going to reach us fingers crossed!

Sorted the boot release! MMI > CAR > Central Locking > Boot Release > Off. This means if when you're stationary, engine running, you get out, press the padlock open button on your drivers door and it will allow you to open the boot! Happy days! ;o)

Not sure about petrol cap, one tried that method but it's always still locked

is this B8 2.0T more spevifically then? I just got my B7 2.0T a few days ago...am I to expect this sort of issue

It's stiries like pebbles that put me off getting mine done. My mate still reckons just run it and keep putting oil in. But I just don't know
Definately get it done as your oil consumption will just get worse until damage is finally caused. The work done makes a difference and the ecu update really transforms the car! Read my previous posts for the improvements I got!

It may be the fuel cap solenoid. I believe these are a common fault on B8 from reading other threads. Sometimes the don't unlock or lock with you cars locking system. I think a new solenoid is £15 from Audi.

Also Jackie, my first visit into Audi i was able to view my cars full Audi history on screen and mine was recalled in for something to do with the filler cap, also on my reading up online a while ago, somewhere online I found that a few years ago there was a recall on the filler cap lock not working. I'll try and find the link, it may be your car has slipped through the net and it was never done......

I'll try and find the link for you.

Pfft. I think I dreamt the seeing it online bit but I'm 99% sure I read it on screen in Audi that my car had something done in relation to the filler cap as part of a recall or something. Take a look at this chat about it all...
