Audi want about £150-£200 for a new key as I only have 1 for my S3 - what the best plan, could I buy a key and get someone to code it to the car? what's that going to cost.

Make sure it's someone you know or trust if you don't go through the main dealer option. You don't want just any old tom, **** or harry with your key code.

Yep Audi.
I wouldn't trust anyone else to code me another key.
Expensive yes as I had to get myself one last year £180 quid thereabouts.
Half hour labour 55 quid and the key.
At least ul have comeback if the key develops a fault

Did you buy the car from Audi? Once i completed the deal and only realised it only had one key i pretty much just demanded they give me another one or i would walk away there and then!! I got my key anyway

My key was recently destroyed by an envious now ex-work college, audi wanted £235 inc vat, I didn't want to chance it by going to a third party as everyone of them I called told me they couldn't be 100% guaranteed but would give me 99% assurance, third party prices ranged from £100 to £180 but beware of the Chinese replica keys on eBay that don't work, or the ones that have already been programmed to a car as theses cannot be reprogrammed to yours despite what they tell you

there's plenty of trust worthy people that do keys for a living that will come to you & charge less than Audi

You can use a 2nd hand remote but it would need a blank blade & a virgin transponder fitting. Also whoever supplies & programs the key will give exactly the same guarantees that Audi give. What area do you live in?

I can do these. I'll PM my details but with travel to Manchester you'd be looking at a similar price to audi but with less inconvenience, no waiting time, and the same garentee against defects. It would also be a genuine oem key used, as far as I'm aware there are no cheaper aftermarket options for the 8p yet.

I've used some of them before , I bought a van with no key , called one of these guys out who coded me a key and removed any old ones from working on the van, should anyone who might have the old keys just come along and try to steal it, if your not to happy to have them coming to your house arrange to drive to them, that way it's cheaper and it will be cheaper if you have one key already, that way they would need to drive around looking for the car, and they are not going to do that, these guys spend £1000's on there equipment and have to be registered to offer the service, yes there will be some that aren't, but most will,

I had to get one as well, around £200 from Audi, just make sure that whoever does it recodes the original, new key and car so that the missing key will no longer work

whatever equipment is used will automatically delete any keys not present so no need to worry about that. You have to enter how many keys your programming, so if you have 1 original & are wanting 1 new key you'd enter 2, then cycle them both in the ignition once prompted

I can vouch for this guy,
I had lost my spare key and Tom had got my key replaced with a OEM Genuine flip key exactly as the original.
Worked out cheaper and a hell of a lot quicker to get the key. Audi wanted atleast 2 weeks for their key, where Tom had mine done straight away ^^

If you was wanting to meet me in the middle of nowhere away from your house I would ask you for photo id and proof of ownership of the car.
Regarding accreditations, there are currently no regulatory bodies to govern an auto locksmith. As such anybody could jump straight into it with a decent wedge of cash. There are plenty of courses and certificates to choose from though.
CRB checks, again we dont have to have these, but as my second job requires a CRB yearly and a credit license i have this.

The real questions you want to ask IMO: are the keys warrantied, weather oem or aftermarket, and is the guy insured to work on your car in this way. Auto locksmith insurance is quite bespoke and general traders insurance may not cover you. Ive seen several people now using cheap tools leaving cars immobile. I have yet to suffer this problem, but am insured for the worst case scenario.

I know its been said before, but regarding driving off with your car, I have the tools to do this quite easily within a few minutes. However would anybody with a business with prospects, and tens or even hundreds of thousands of pounds and time invested, really want to steal a car for a few quid and massive risk? I wouldnt.

plenty of people do get into keys & go around calling themselves an auto locksmith when they've had no training, got no qualifications & no lock experience. They program a couple of keys then all of a sudden they're an auto locksmith

I had someone today phone me that had got a guy out that was advertising as an auto locksmith to program his existing key to his 2007 Leon which he'd just bought as a non runner with immob fault. He spent about an hour trying to get it to program but couldn't get it to work.

After asking a few questions i found out that the remote was a bit dubious, the case had 3 buttons but on the back of the case it had the part number for a 2 button remote that won't work with mk2 Leon & will only work with 2002-06 mk1 Leon.

I was also told he'd been trying to program a blank transponder with VCDS which isn't going to work because the transponder is precoded on his Leon, easily established because it says "SAFE" where the mileage is displayed in the cluster instead of having the old car with key immob symbol. The supposed auto locksmith said that it said "SAFE" on the dash because the radio needed coding which has got to be the biggest load of crap i've ever heard.

The auto locksmith left & charged him £30 for doing nothing. It ended up with a lock out time on the immob due to all the messing about. He told the customer he would have to come back when he'd bought some new equipment in a couple of weeks & plug his equipment in so it would count down the 82mins of the lockout time, all of which he said he'd have to charge him for.

I don't mind people making a living but i hate people claiming to be something they're not & trying to pull the wool over peoples eyes
