Where to stay in wales for driving weekend?

Hi all

i think we're going to head into Wales on the weekend of our collection of our new s3.

Have only been to wales a few times before and never really to explore driving roads. I keep hearing about the EVO triangle but what else is there?

we'll only be staying one night so any decent suggestions for where to park ourselves up? Don't mind b&b, hotel etc etc all fine.

Where part of Wales is the dealer. I stayed and driven in Wales quite a few times but it depends where you will be starting from.

It's amazing and right near Snowdonia. It'll keep the missus happy and is only a stones throw from the best driving roads in Wales! As an Audi owner I presume you will appreciate a touch of class...

If you fancy North Wales I've stayed at an Inn called The Tanronnen Inn in the village of Beddgelert. It's at the junction of the A4085 and A498 in Snowdonia. It's a good pub with nice rooms and a reasonable restaurant and right in the centre of the village. Their website is Tanronnen Inn, Beddgelert, Snowdonia, Wales

One of my favourite drives in Wales is the A4212 between the A470 at Trawsfyndd and Bala. Good road surface, quite open and with lots a lovely sweeping bends. I always make the point of heading for this particular road whenever I go to Wales. A lot of the roads in the Snowdonia area also very good and fun to drive.

Drove down this road myself in September... get caught in traffic though unfortunately!

Tyddyn Llan in Llandrillo if you're feeling flush. Good food and a stones throw from Snowdonia. The A4212 between Bala and Trawsfynydd should be good fun in an S3...as will most roads around there!

It's a fantastic hotel, been a few times and can't recommend it enough! Here's the view and probably one of the best photos I've ever taken!

Cemerson - Bristol may surprise you - it's in a perfect location (it takes me 20 minutes to get from my home in Bristol across the Severn Bridge and into Wales, plus it's really a lovely city.
For the journey to Bristol - Brecon Beacons has some great small roads, and you can always go west and explore Wiltshire.

I know this area very well, we used to have a place near a small village, Ffarmers near Pumpsaint...

There is a mountain road (sometimes closed so check it out first) that takes you through the forestry between Ffarmers and Llandewi Brefi (Little Britain) then onto Tregaron and Devils Bridge.

Bath has no roads nearby just traffic jams. Full of toffs and Tourists ( nearly typed Tories) too!

I would be looking at Hotel du Vin Bristol ;-)

I have a cousin who lives in Bristol, a brother who lives just north of Bristol and some friends who live in Thornbury and whenever I have visited any of them I have always run into traffic jams around Bristol. I also used to go down to Somerset quite frequently and always ran into huge traffic jams between the M4 and Avonmouth. Now I usually go via the M6, M42 and M5 and The M5 north of Bristol must be the worst surfaced motorway I have ever travelled on in the UK or Europe.

Personally I would stay well clear of Bristol and go into Wales via the M54 and Shrewsbury. It takes you straight into mid-Wales with easy access to North Wales which is a much better and quieter area for driving.

No Dan, pretty much clear... My route would be..

From a Hotel in Bristol...

M32 to M4.. M4 head towards wales then take the new M49 off M4 heading towards SW (Avonmouth).. cracking fairly new piece of Motorway, little in the way of traffic, never seen any police. Took an Audi R8 for a spin on here... wow.. all of course within legal limit ;-0

You could take a few trips up and down the M49 and then either head into Wales (if you like that sort of thing) or maybe head down towards Exeter or Plymouth.. the M5 is a great Motorway and rarely that busy apart from the summer. Talk to KempySue on this forum for recommendations.

The Bristol area is full of culture and arguably the home of one of Britain's greatest Engineers. IK Brunel. You have the Clifton Suspension Bridge, SS Great Britain and a wide number of things to do, including great Restaurants, when you aren't driving.
If you ask you may even be able to sort out a blast around Castle Coombe which isn't far away!
Before anyone asks I'm not in marketing but just reckon Bristol are has a lot to offer.

Bath is nice too but full of MB's,BMW's,PP's and Hunting and Fishing Tory types IMHO.

Bristol may be a nice cultural city but it hasn't got much in the way of proper driving roads. The thread was 'where to stay in Wales' not Bristol.

You never did say where you are collecting your A3 from. Could make a difference which is the best way into Wales.

Better still just miss Bristol all together. Now to get to both my brother's and my friend's I just come down the M5 and turn off at Junction 14 before I get to Bristol.

I think it's very constructive. I can think of far better ways to go in to Wales, especially for the excellent driving roads in North Wales, than to go in via Bristol. From the OP's location it seems he is in Melton Mobray which means he would be better to go into Wales via the M54 and Shrewsbury than to drive south to Bristol only to drive north again to North Wales.

Melton Mowbray is almost level North to South with the M54. Use that way, Shrewsbury, A458 to Dolgellau and then the A470 to Snowdonia. I've driven that way a number of times, some quiet motorway (M54) good A roads, with interesting driving. Just right for trying out a new car. After all I think he is looking for good driving rather than posh hotels, culture and night-life.

If someone was coming from the south of England then I'm sure you information would have been helpful, but assuming the OP is collecting his new car from near where he lives going into Wales via Bristol would not be a good idea.
