Ok.Here I go.My a3 lacks power from first through to third gear.No limp mode at all. When I bought the car a month ago, there was a leak and a massive air/whooshing noise.found leak on the n/s intercooler flange, and I sorted this.hasnt improved problem at all really.powers uphill no probs now. When the car is cold, there is generally no low power and pulling off is sluggish.is this the case now I have a 6 speed?my old 1.9 awx engine could kick the **** out this car,so why going from a 1.9 to a 2.0 is worse. There is also juddering under load. Fuel economy looks about 45-50,where my awx could achieve 60-65 at best. The car used to struggle to get passed 3k revs until warm as well.now its a little better. When pulling off,the car does feel like its in limp mode in 1st and 2nd actually.no confidence in over taking, but done the off/on approach and no improvement ever. So,i changed the fuel filter today,as the old one was black and tar like.No improvement, but needs testing to see if the juddering has gone. I too have whooshing when cold when releasing throttle over 2.5k revs. I have unplugged maf sensor, and no power at all. if intercooler leak was right next to boost sensor, could this be something? HELP ME PLEASE GAV

has your car had a replacement turbo put on it ? it could be a poor rebuilt turbo as i have seen them cause all sorts of problems although they work they arnt set up 100% and they should only be repalced with brand new genuine garret turbos to get the most out of them , cannot say thats what it is as it could be loads of things ! but its one thing to look at when you have exhausted all the other avenues

also if you fuel filter was black , was the fuel black ? as it could be that you have a leaking tandem pump also

Diesel was wasnt black.filter change helped a little, but still limited to 3k when cold.why is temp a factor.also got the whistle and dump valve noises and ail

Sounds like turbo to me ! Mad you should not be governed by power when cold I mean they are often a little bit slower more sluggish but they should still rev to the governor !

I think its a turbo problem but quote me as I can't tell without being their i would get a specialist to diagnose it and it it is the turbo only buy a genuine one from somewhere like turbo dynamics as they donf make parts to rebuild them and don't give specs on how to set up vnt and I'v not seen anywhere that can set then up! And if they say they can don't listen

What changes between cold and hot?something is stopping actuator till it reaches temp.maybe coolant sensor or actuator stiff.it deffo feels limited in general.boost seems pretty strong but no limpmode from boost leak.can a turbo operate slightly with a vacuum leak in actuator.

Its hard to say I would start will a full system can and some logging with vagcom to start that will give you a better idea then go from their

I wouldn't rev it past 2k when cold. Have you scanned it with VCDS? Also EGR valve is worth checking as might be clogged up.
Also try BG244 injector cleaner.

I usually let the car idle for a few minutes before setting off.I have purchased a £10 copy of vagcom/software/driver thinking of a cheap deal, but now realise that there isn't much I can buy cable wise.what did you buy and how much.any good?

I have tried the car with maf off,and no power,so it works.tried with egr disconnected and no difference.its the dump valve noises and turbo whistles that concern me.I reckon theres a split in the vacuum hose to turbo.its a soft limp mode that doesn't improve with switching ignition on and off.its got 75% grunt compared to my awx 1.9 tdi sport.

people say its an ingection loom that's known to be faulty.its true that I need to check the egr/intake pipe to manifold.it doesn't smoke under load or nuthin.thanks for your replies.

You could surely buy the cable either from eBay Germany and use the Google Translate or Aliexpress or DHgate... they are roughly sold for 30 quid... depends if you're after high quality cable, OEM ones or fake Chines...

You can't find OEMs that easily but you could find high quality ones, seen people use high quality cables and works absolutely fine!

I'll buy one for myself, if anybody interested let me know I order more and then once arrived I ship them to your end :)

But you won't get any help from us on here if you're using a fake cable

There are a few on here that sell genuine Ross Tech VCDS and are well worth the asking price IMO

It really needs scanning to be sure and a physical look, feel, see of the pipes for leaks

My 2.0tdi is useless this time of year, front wheel drive and far too much torque in wet conditions never mind ice ect!

Something is sure amiss

Hi,sorry for the delayed reply.I have aseen a vcds today on amazon.some say the micro can is ideal for a single car maintenance.others say the hexcan is the best.the amazon one is £27 and its a hex can.any advise?

I did however today do the Italian and set off on the motorway slip road from 3rd gear 1.5k revs and floored it to 4.5k revs.I think the result has slightly improved driving all round.hmmm.no limp mode and the usual judder in 6th at 2k revs has delayed to 2.4k revs now before the wobble.

hmmm.im starting to think that my usual dump valve noise and whistle could just be baked on carbon on turbo exhaust side.i will do more but Christmas means less driving overall.oh and some chick just dented the driver door and wing in one hit!!!!

Hmmm.maybe this Italian tune up does actually heat the exhaust to its hottest causing the carbon to heat up and dislodge.redex didn't do much really even two bottles over 20-30l.

oh and reverse and first/sometimes second hard to get in and first suffers from stuck in gear.when stationary with foot on clutch in first, the clutch engages making the change out of first impossible only when stationary.i believe this to be the slave cylinder fault, but no obvious leaks on the driveway as under tray removed.

If you are still looking for VAG.com cable, ask Nigel (NHN). He is an authorized dealer for Rosstech and will sort you out. Don't buy a fake/cheap cable as it could damage the car.

Gazza, did you find out what the problem was in the end? I seem to have similar symptoms, prodominantly the whining when i take my foot off the accelerator and lack of boost. I also get smoke out of the back, i dont seem to lose a great deal of power because the car compensates with more revs. Turbo was replaced less than a year and a half ago with a garratt refurbished so praying it's not that. :confounded:

Same 2.0 tdi bkd engine.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
