How did you end up at an S3?

Ford Escort 1.6GL (Y-1984)
- first car kept for a year

Ford Fiesta XR2 (B-1985)
- kept for 1 week as it was rubbish and slow for a not so hot hatch

Golf GTI Mk2 (A -1984)
- kept for 8 years

Peugeot 205 1.9 (H-1990)-
- kept it for 8 years. great fun but as robust as a newspaper in a bath full of water. nice and sensible stereo this time

Peugeot 1.4L (M-1995)
- wifes car, bought new. Then bought her the merc in 2005 it became the tip run car, then gave it to parents in 2007ish as their car packed up

Merc A class 1.4 elegance LWB (04-2004)
- wife likes it, I hate it. bought it at 10 months old

Peugeot 307xsi (52-2002)
-still have it, bought new
-been good, nice to drive, sporty but pretty slow, decent spec at the time (better std spec than audi a3 or vw golf gti at the time)

Fiesta 1.25 (R-1998)
- bought in feb this year off wifes friend for £300 - excellent condition and only 70K miles as a tip run/spare car

Audi S3 sportback (04-2014)
- I want it now!!

I test drove a few cars:
liked the b class amg sport for different reasons
then looked at the a class (A45 and A250) but felt it was too cramped
tried a jag xf but hated it
sat in the golf gti but hated the cheaper interior
liked the s3 saloon which is what drew me to audi then sat in an a3 saloon but didn't like the rear headroom / space
then sat in / drove the s3 sportback and after 30 secs and all i thought on the test drive was "I WANT THIS CAR!!"

lol, wife now wants an audi - but an audi tt - seen some cracking contract hire deals at the mo at £190ish. if we get that we'll have to have a 3rd car for the family

Won't bore you with all 30+ cars.......highlights are:

Volkswagen Golf Driver (first car)
Fiat Bravo HGT
Ford Probe V6
Vauxhall Vectra GSi
Renaultsport Megane 225
Renaultsport Clio V6 Phase I
Renaultsport Clio 172
Vauxhall Astra VXR Phase I
Ford Focus ST3 Phase I
Daihatsu Copen
Renaultsport Clio 197 Cup
Honda S2000
Renaultsport Clio V6 Phase I (another one)
Renaultsport Megane 250 Cup
Audi S5 Coupe Black Edition 2013 (current daily runner)

Mercedes SLK 55 AMG 2006 (Current garage queen)
Audi S3 Sportback 2013 (collecting on Wednesday and replacing my S5)

How did you find going from the Renaultsports to Audi? I loved my R26 Megane, remapped it to about 270bhp and the handling was sublime. I think the S3 isn't quite as much fun but everything else is miles ahead in terms of an everyday car.
What do you think of the S5?

I've found the S5 completely lacking in driving related areas, other than in snow (when the 4WD made it worthwhile).
Obviously the S5 looks great (in coupe form) and is very well built and specced, but for me the drive is key and that's what lets the S5 down and I won't really miss it.

The quality of the Audi's are a big leap over the Renaultsports, but I'd still likely have gone back to a Megane platform Renaultsport if they offered 4WD and 5 door.
Renaultsport know how to create a car with character and driver focus. The Megane 265 is, in my opinion, the best hot hatch package available out there just now and had I been looking for a 3 door and not had a baby on the way I'd have been in a 265.
The Megane is faster A to B than many cars with a lot more power.

If I'm honest I don't expect that the S3 will drive as well as the Megane or as you say be as much fun, but will be a good middle ground and be far more manouverable than the S5 (even as a SB).
5 door and 4WD were the reason I went S3.

All IMO incase I offend any sensitive souls.

Do think if I was gonna buy an A5 it would have to be an RS5. They do look and sound amazing.
I considered buying another Renaultsport Megane, but I got sick of the build quality and after you've had something like an Audi it's hard to go back! My last megane had 12k on it when I bought but rattled like it had 120k on it. Great to drive though especially on back roads.
I'm pretty sure the new S3 will be a big step up from the 8P, not even seen a 3 door in the metal yet let alone driven one!

reckon my Mugen M20 would shortfall your Megane in the pointy stakes, sad to see it go, but it'll make way for something more easy to live with in the same way. i must be getting old, LOL.............

I no longer have a Megane and have no doubt that you wouldn't be able to escape one in your modified Civic.

the French know how to make cars with passion, just build quality lets them down. Peugeot lost their way though the new 308gti and r look more like it!

That's way too cheap a day rate for a Barrister.. perhaps s/he drives a Nissan Micra ;-)
