I know it's been covered loads of times in the past but i've never seen anyone come up with a definative answer..... my car is making quite a raquet on tickover but as soon as i touch the loud pedal it goes away... logic is telling me it's the dual mass flywheel starting to let me know it's on it's way out so i'm thinking maybe the time is coming to change the clutch and flywheel.... but what to put in ? Everything seems to be going for a singlemasss conversion as they are a lot cheaper but i've heard rumours they rattle on idle... is this true ??? have you got one fitted ? and can you comment ?... the Engine is an AVF code 1.9TDi and the car an Avant Quattro so it's six speed and a larger flywheel/clutch.... what would be the best way for a home DIY mechanic to do this job ??? from the top taking the engine out or from underneath removing the gearbox... I've done it the later way on and old 2wd coupe and it was damn hard getting the gearbox back on on my own so i'm thinking engine out is going to be easiest ....any comments and tips much apreaciatedregards Mark

Im going to buy a valeo single mass kit from euro car parts for mine (just over 300 quid) . I know people are against it because of idle chatter but i really dont think its as bad as most people make out

What's your power goal ? I had a 240mm single mass flywheel and custom clutch on a FWD 1.9Tdi and it was rattling on iddle but ok on the go, syncros in the gearbox gone after 3k miles so i would stick to DMF if i was in your position. Mine was a 5 speed gearbox which is a 01X, made of cheese and cardboard. Your's should be a 01E variant so a bit more stronger, unless it's not made by Getrag...

The kit im talking about is designed for the replacment of dmf so i doubt they would sell a kit that will chew your gearbox up that quick. Mine isnt a quattro though

Adam... no requirement for more power ... it has a mild map to 160 which is fine by me... do you think your synchro's went because you threw more power at the box or because of the single mass flywheel ?I really don't want it rattling on idle.... the idea is to get rid of a noise not add another lol.... i would go dualmass but there so exspensive it's mad

Would definitely say DMF to stay on the safe side, only advantage to single mass is cost but that could work out allot more expensive judging by reviews. Sachs should easily handle 160 but why not go for more power as the only limiting factor would be if the clutch was slipping but your replacing that haha .

I hope you don't talk about the Valeo SMF conversion... syncro's didn't break because of the power, i am a considerate driver ! I would stay with DMF and organic Sachs SRE clutch, will take everything you throw at it ! Don't try do major jobs on a budget, they will bite back !

Right well that does it for me then,,,, i know you and Jake know your stuff when it comes to the diesels...DMF it will have to be.... how about tackling the job ?? engine out ??

I you do it on a drive then engine out is easier, takes a little longer but it's much easier to have the engine hung by a crane compared with wrestling with a 60-70Kg gearbox under the car on axle stands ! Done it every possible way and it's engine out for me, every time !

To be fair Chris knows his stuff and I just parrot him haha I'm useless with a spanner, only other things I know are from what I read as I'm a bit OCD with forums and car stuff.

Is the hydraulic slave cylinder mounted inside the bellhousing ??? should this be changed at the same time ?? on the A3 it's wise to do this at the same time as a precaution

External slave cylinder, does not require replacing unless faulty !

right thats good then..... just thinking out loud here .. i'm guess most of the ancillories can stay on the engine ... split the exhaust at the turbo ? would i need a new gasket there ? also guessing i'm going to have to break the aircon system apart so that will need regassing afterwards
