Missing Radar detector thingy?

Having found the radar sensor in the Golf section I had another look in the A3 section and found the details. The Golf shows a round one and then a rectangular one but it seems Audi could not be bothered to change the drawings and just changed the part numbers with effect from 16/9/2013. I would assume that if it changed shape on the Golf it also changed shape on the A3.

Good spot - Mystery solved!

Are all the other part numbers the same? Eg the grill, mounting bracket etc. I'm just wondering if the two sensors are directly interchangeable so that those with a strong preference either way could change it if they wanted.

Have you got the diagrams or part numbers of both?

the new one looks awful in my opinion, what a horrible looking bit of plastic. That's going to look PANTS on the front of my New S3, build week 1.

Is the 'camera' only needed for reading speed limit signs when you have Tech pack + Active lane assist?

Bring back the round one, I say! The rectangular one just looks like an after thought :(

I have to agree. I'm glad I got the old type. In fact, if the rectangular one is to be the norm from now on I think they should hide it behind the grille.

Just driven 40 miles home & cruise seems fine. Only comment I could make would be it was really hard to get the red warning of "too close" on the dashboard without real tailgating (if it was you in a transit eastbound on the A50 I apologise!)...
I set the distance on the cruise settings to max to no avail but first impression is there's no particular fault, just change of part maybe?
Would still like a dealer to confirm if at all possible.
Thanks.
Stu

Soz that was a late post from 630pm :O
Looks like problem solved anyway!
Thanks all muchly.

I got the red tailgate sign three times today! Need to stop driving like a typical Audi driver I think!

I have the part numbers for both the Golf and the A3 but I'm not sure they will tell you if they are interchangeable.

Golf - old - Radar Unit - 5Q0 907 541 G
Golf - old - Trim - 5G0 907 461

Golf - new - Radar Unit - 5Q0 907 561 A
Golf - new - Trim - 5G0 907 225 B

A3 - old - Radar Unit - 5Q0 907 541 F
A3 - old - Trim - 8V0 807 224

A3 - new - Radar Unit - 5Q0 907 541 H
A3 - new - Trim - 8V0 907 224A

Quite how significant the letter change at the end of the part is I'm not sure, but it does appear that the units used on the Golf and the A3 and the same or very close apart from the trim.

Make sure you are sitting down when you read this next bit.....

Both old and new units on the Golf cost £1,004.56 for the Radar Unit and £2.90 for the trim
For the A3, again the old and new units are the same price - £1,066.97 for the Radar Unit and £3.05 for the trim.
£62 more when you buy it for an Audi than buying the same thing for a Golf.

I wonder then if you get the round one if you also have the camera by the rear view mirror, as doesn't this option make the speed at which ACC operates increase?

So I suppose to prove the theory is there anyone on here who has received their car recently with a build week in October with ACC and lane assist?

do you have the round sensor?

Ahhhh! Sorry!

Didn't realise you'd only just got your car and it was a 'new' build post the date change posted above

So I had my original one on 2nd Sept with round mean looking radar thingy that seemed to work better at warning me about tail gating but now my Dec 2nd one, exactly same spec comes with plastic rectangular chinese bit that doesn't work so well!? All because of original dealer ****-up? :-( :'(
With lane assist & ACC are they right to have given me the rectangular plastic one?
Stu.

Doesn't that only add side assist though when you've already specced lane assist and acc? The front radar won't make any difference with side assist though surely?

side assist is not part of the pack
what you get is ACC high instead of ACC low (you can check on the online configurator)
full description :

High-beam assist
Audi Parking System Plus
Adaptive Cruise Control
Front Assist incl. city automatic emergency braking for ACC high
Lane departure warning
Light / rain sensor
Windscreen with grey tinted strip

Just had a look at the brochure, the way I read it is that it is nothing to do with whether or not you have lane assist but rather that the extended speed range is included as part of the drivers assistance package. So in theory you could spec ACC and lane assist separately and still not get the high speed ACC, that is only part of the DA package. I would love to be wrong on this for your sake so I'm hoping that someone else will pipe up and prove me wrong.

edit: oops, seems I was beaten to it.

this is what I just said. only way to get ACC high I through the driver assistance pack

anyway, who cares ? are you really gonna use the ACC much at more than 100mph ?

That's what I'm thinking. Just ran my spec through as is and then with the assistance pack instead and it's £40 more for the assistance pack configuration. The only thing this would get me is the round sensor extending the acc range up to 124mph, nothing else.

Not sure if I can be bothered to hassle my dealer to change my order AGAIN just for this, I'll never use acc at that speed but do prefer the look of the round sensor.

I ll have to look at configuration tomorrow. Can't understand why it would have changed from Sept to Dec? I didn't spec ACC high specifically as I recall, just the comfort pack?

Did you uncheck the high beam assist when choosing driving assist pack ?

Might as well reconcile yourself to the fact that you will be doing this in the morning! If you at least accept it now you'll get a much better night's sleep. That nice round sensor will be calling to you in your sleep!

I have high beam assist plus acc & active lane assist?
Is it just later cars that have the plastic unit, or all with a particular spec?
Confused again!

Looks like I got it in the nick of time then, long live the round radar!

at least it wont break with stones. that'll be why it's changed. does look ****e though.

Why is bouncing off one bit of plastic any better than bouncing off a different bit of plastic?

The red warning has nothing to do with the distance setting on the ACC, it'll trigger at the same point whatever the setting (depending on your speed). That's part of pre-sense front rather than ACC.

How have we suddenly come to the conclusion that the round one comes with the driver assist pack and the rectangular one otherwise? I thought it was discovered above all cars built after the certain date in September will come with the rectangular one, what's the driver assist pack got to do with it? The drivers assist pack isn't available in combination with the comfort package anyway so couldn't have got that even if I wanted it.

For what it's worth, here is a picture from Silky_S3's new car thread - brand new and with the round version:-

did you read this page ? Did you check my links ? did you read the brochure ? :detective2:

The way I understand it is that the DA pack includes everything from the comfort pack anyway, it's just a comfort pack deluxe/+/high is it not?

Perhaps it was the variable range headlights or something then... there was some reason I couldn't get the driver's assistant pack with something else I had anyway.

Edit: It's Side Assist. You can't have that and the assist pack. Very odd, considering my spec has everything from the assist pack anyway (apart from the extended range on the ACC - but who honestly is going to use that over 100mph?)

Yes I did read this page, hence the question. It states that after a certain September build date the style changed. I still don't see what it has to do with the driver assist pack. For a start, I don't have the assist pack, my ACC goes up to 100mph, and I have the round version.

mine is from end of October as is my co worker's one. built same week and received same day.
Guess what:
I have the round and he has the flat
i have driver assistance pack and he doesn't
I can go up to 200kmh and he can go only to 150

really, I don't see why you're still doubting ?

and, to answer your last post, I also have side assist + driver assistance pack

Have you tried putting it into the configurator? When you select the assist pack the side assist greys out. You don't have variable range lights though... maybe that was it!

Why I'm still doubting? Because as I said, my car doesn't follow your rule! I have the round sensor, no assist pack, and 100mph ACC.
