Ok, if anyone can shed some light on how this happened it would be brilliant!

Basically last night around 11pm, was on my way home and just pulled onto the driveway when i smelt a bonfire smell. Thought it was a bit strong but presumed it was from outside so off i went into the house. Come back out to get my protein i bought home from work and it was like that scene from scary movie. The smoke was ridiculous!

Scary Movie Shorty Scene's: "Oh ****, It's Shorty!" "Weed-Plant" "BeetleJuice" - YouTube

So yea, if anyone's got any spare boot plastics laying around, or knows of anyone selling some then send them my way please! :(

Oh, and a couple of items in my boot were a fur coat. Some coolant. And a magnet from work.

Uh my question would be, how the hell did it catch fire.

rear wiper motor?

oh nvm, only the lower boot

No PM in my inbox.

Never seen a wiper motor do that & the motor is about a foot higher anyway, only thing in that area is boot lock, but as you can see, the lock latching area isn't really badly damaged, very strange, are the wires twisted around eachother burnt away at all as it looks just like the plastic has melted.

Ahhh the batteries in the boot isn't it, I can see the metal cover now, as it looks like its melted from below upwards, remove the lid & check the battery condition & surrounding areas, be careful as it may have acid come out.

Thanks for that ill check that out! Theres a wire (you can just see it in the pics) any idea what this does as its burnt to a crisp! Everything works tho, rear lights, rear wiper, motor, etc etc so i don't know what it does!

I sent you a message asking if anything has come out recently that would enable me to upgrade my xenon headlights to ones with the DRL strip yet.

Thanks mate!

Can't see any scorch marks, some form of chemical reaction?
Or even that strip of wire that may have got very hot and melted its surroundings as it appears localised to that?
No old amp/sub cables is there by any chance?

Talk to t8ups for drl strips, he is working on a few bits for me atm... :D

Nasty damage, glad you caught it in time.

Have you added any different rear bulbs?

Cars completely standard apart from your MY12 rear lights and i fitted some audi a8 number plate lights a while ago. But no one else reported any problems from them.

Guess i need to investigate it more tomorrow but it all seems so weird how it would just do that. I wonder if i took it back to audi they would sort it FOC?

That would be subject to them finding nothing you have fitted or messed with has caused the problem.

Try and trace where that cable is going... Doesnt look standard, and you wont have a case if its not all oem

The wires are factory.

what that gold plated cable that looks like speaker wire Nige?

i've never actually been under that bit, but i've not seen a standard loom with that style cable before?

What you're seeing from the low res pics, is the cable sheafing colour, not gold plated wiring.

Ahhh im on my phone... Thats what it looks like on this

How bigs the magnet? Had the coolant leaked at all?

Was the fur coat in actual fact a fire breathing fox?

It's definitely standard cable. Its just the outer part of it has melted and come off lol.

Magnet was about 200x200x200mm.
Coolant was brand new and nothing had leaked.

LOL! If it was a "fire breathing Fox" I would just put everything back together and not worry about it. Last thing I want right now tho is for it to happen again and the whole car go up!

Thats a fairly big magnet, im just wondering whether it could have interacted with anything whilst in the boot causing this to happen? It may sound farfetched but who knows.

I'd take it in and have it checked regardless... Chance your arm with them and you never know... N might be able to update us all on exactly what happened

Maybe the magnet created static electricity from the fur coat and sparked against the exposed metal part of the car ??

Ok, update. That wire was the wire to the bose sub in the boot! Got that sorted at a car audio shop. New plastic and boot mat cost a bomb but thats sorted! Now i just need a spare wheel or the tyre to go on one and im done!

Been quoted £65 for just the tyre! Im looking at paying £50 max for the tyre or wheel with tyre if i can get away with it!

I knew that looked like audio cable.... Glad you got it sorted pal.... did they ever determine what could have been the original cause of this?

space saver from ebay or in the local classifieds, see if you can get it any cheaper...

I knew that looked like audio cable....

Yep, i started playing some tunes with nice bass and did not sound right at all, so i figured it was the sub as all the rear lights/wiper and washer were working fine. The car audio shop took a look. £90 for it to be replaced. Not bad i didn't think! :)

Maybe get on flebay and purchase a fire extinguisher for the car just in case

It depends if your handy at doing that sorta stuff yourself or not... I would have fell over if someone quoted me that to replace a sub cable... But out a garage or an audio shop thats only to be expected.... I knew that was the case though, cause when you put up the original pics I was racking my brain to think of what oem wiring would have been run along that section and now its perfectly explanatory with the amp on the right with the sub on the left... cant believe I missed that 1...lol

Yep, i got no idea, and id rather not blow up something else in the car lol! I thought the amp had a built in sub so thought they were both on the same side otherwise i would have guessed what it was sooner!
