Engine rebuild required on a B8 @68k

Yeah and the dealer will tell you it is not up to them!!
My exhaust are tips bought from Audi designed for the A8, but fit very nicely!

Just spoke to Audi dealer, they said to get the car to them, they will do the first part of the oil consumption test, replace the engine breather, crank seal and do a software update, I will then have to drive it (if I can) for 621 miles as you say, then return it for them to weigh the oil, he is calling me back later with the cost, I said is this going to cost me around £600? He very kindly said he should be able to get it done for a lot less than that. Sounds promising.

I asked him if I'm allowed to change the spark plugs so I can drive it back to them and they are happy for me to do this, which is good! I feel like progress is being made somehow!?!

If they are doing just the crank seal then it will be cheaper but they should need to fit the crank pump as well which is the expensive bit as it takes ages.
But yes does sound good, good luck.

Cheers AJM, if I ever get the car back on the road, I may look at the chrome pipes like yours, if you look at the pic of my car, it has the chrome kit on it.

Update, I've just spoken with the garage I bought the car from, I have updated them and asked if when I have the price I pass it on to them would they be willing to cover the costs, they are going to compare the costs with their mechanic, I have explained that the 2 year guarantee I can get with Audi is important to me and the Audi work alone and I don't want to be having to go back to them in 12 months if anything goes wrong, they're 50 miles away.

Went to my local Audi dealership and said to them i would be interested in getting the car serviced in the future there to make it sound like i meant business in the future but also said the car was using ALOT of oil. So the car is booked in on Tuesday for them to give it a once over and look for oil leaks etc (which i know it doesn't) and then go from there. No doubt it will cost me for this first work to be done but at least its on the books then.

So an update on my car, its been back into Audi main dealer after the check up as they ordered a crank seal and new PCV. All fitted and guessing an ECU update too for the grand sum of £181.

The car was down on power and now pulls properly again and the engine has just come up with an oil refill warning after 1150 miles. Bearing in mind it was consistently 430 miles every top up I'm quite happy with the result and can live with that kind of usage if I'm honest.

Update following Oil Consumption Piston Job
500 miles and the bar is full! :arco:

Only problem is fuel consumption is up, but I assume this is because the engine is still tight.
Before piston job fuel and oil was costing me about 15p per mile
After piston job fuel and no oil is costing me about 20p per mile :wtf:

Guess its a good job I don't do many miles! Just fast ones!! :racer:

Update.

After all the work and the bills to date, oil light on after 350 miles (and improvement of 150 miles) but still not very good. So looks like I will be getting the pistons etc etc now then!

I hope my fuel economy does not get worse as the best I have had over the last 4000 mile is 26mpg (worked out properly, not from the dis) and the last tank was 19!!!!!!! My Forester STI did 20 and that had 400bhp!

That's not good. The master tech at Audi didn't bother with the first fix on mine. In fact the pistons were ordered before I'd finished the consumption test just based on what I'd told him.

The figures quoted by me above are based on 43mpg actual and current 29.6mpg on dis. To be fair I never expected 43mpg from this engine so I can't complain too much, especially not when the missus 2.4l petrol Jeep just scrapes in 23mpg on a run! :scared2:

Maybe not 43 but I bought this car as I wanted at least in the late 30's on a run. 26mpg on 400 miles of motorway is poor for almost any car!!

Update on my A4, Audi came back with the price of £400 inc VAT for the first part of the oil consumption test, I need to drop the car off tomorrow, I asked them to give me a ball park for stage 2, they have told me that worst case scenario it will cost £1900 inc VAT Max. Which is great from an original quote of £5000 but still a lot of money.

The garage I bought the car from have said that they will cover the costs of oil consumption test stage 1 (£400) which is great and much appreciated. They haven't yet confirmed if they will cover stage 2 (£1900) I hope so as it will save me a lot of grief.

I asked the person I am dealing with at Audi, how they had come to the conclusion that it is the pistons on their advisory note I got from my diagnostics check? He answered that the car is showing all of the symptoms of this fault, I said (as I have said before) as this is a known fault, why are Audi not repairing this as a warranty repair / recall on the cars, he said it isn't a recall because it isn't a safety issue, which is fair enough, but I said Audi US cover the cost of these repairs, why are the UK not doing the same to which he couldn't answer, but the important thing here is, should I get to stage 2, which I think I will, I am going to bring that little conversation up with Audi UK to see if anything else can be done.

The only reason I have managed to get this far is because of the full Audi Service History and threads like this, giving me knowledge on the car issues, without that, I think I would be in a pickle.:keule:

Does anyone know of anyone that has ever had the issue resolved from Stage one of the oil consumption test, or anyone who has just had stage 2 done straight away without Stage one being carried out?

I had the oil consumption test, went back early as oil light was on after 200 odd miles, then straight to a complete new engine. I think they'll want to review the results from the oil consumption test and decide how they proceed from there

Just as an update on mine, I used 1 litre of oil in about 1300 miles on the new engine. Since topping up again, I've now done 650 miles and the MMI is only down to about 3/4 so looking like it's using much less now that at first. No improvement on fuel as yet though, still only averaging 28-29 mpg compared to 34-35 mpg on the old engine

I would be concerned that Stage 2 is not the crank modification that cost me £600. Or if not it could be that the £1900 is what they are going to charge you as the actual cost will be much higher, as everyone else has had bills in the several thousands and mine is going to cost over £6K (although Audi are paying).
Just waiting for Audi to decide if they are going to do just the pistons or complete new block as well.....

Ill ask them that very question, I picked my Audi up from my garage last night to take it to the Audi dealers this morning. I was told that the £1900 was the worst case scenario so if they sprung another expense in there or didn't do exactly what should be done I would have something to say. He did say that they never do pistons etc for that low a price, I'm due to call Audi UK later to log everything with them. I'm all over this like a man possessed.

My total came to just over £9k with the complete new block although Audi footed most of the bill

Mine had oil consumption test and the results required the car to go straight to the pistons. No breather was fitted to mine.

Story so far with my Oil Consumption test, I've done approx. 300 miles in 1 week and am now just below 1/2 a bar on the oil level indicator on the MMI. I don't think I'll quite make the 621miles. Fed up with all of this to be honest! .........And it's not over yet.:sign_unfair:

I'm going to ask for a detailed break down of the fault and find out why each part is required. Car is smoking heavy though under load so oil is def getting past something.

As far as I'm aware the mmi graph only represents 1litre of oil like a dip stick would. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi

I was just reading back through the forum and was wondering if that is correct, the oil level on the MMI represents only 1 litre of oil? Well I never

Update.
I now have to go through the oil consumption test AGAIN. I mean, really! This is the 7th trip to the dealer that is a 60 mile round trip and another day off wasted sat in the waiting room.
Really starting to consider setting the car on fire now.

7th trip? Wow, why are they making you go through the oil consumption test again? Do they keep doing a little bit more each time? Is that your expense or theirs AJM?

They say because they have modified the engine with the software update and crank pressure thing, that the consumption test previously done is now not valid. Cost wise they have said they will cover the costs of all future repairs but I am waiting for a 'but'....

Oh dear. Sorry to hear that AJM, it's great isn't it, we buy a great car and brand and there are nothing but these issues. I've tried to ignore the stress of it all this week and crack on with normal life as I spent so much time and effort on it at the start. Ill be back to square one in a week!! I wish watchdog would get their teeth into this or something!

I know it sounds ridiculous Jimmy, It was partly a comical comment about watchdog but why is there no investigation anywhere in to this ongoing issue for Audi owners. It is clearly a malfunction on the piston rings on the 2.0TFSi engines 2008-2009-10. The bottom line is, it is the same fault for everyone, massive oil consumption, piston rings, engine breather. Why should the UK owners be subject to these bills when so I believe and forgive me if I'm wrong, the US get their Audis fixed at their expense for this fault? I know people look after their cars differently but I bought my car, as it was in excellent condition, full Audi service history, 60000 miles and after all it is an Audi, quality car, great brand. We're not talking a wear and tear part, we're talking a major part of the engine that shouldn't deteriorate this early on in a cars life. It is ridiculous to hear how people can pay anything from nothing to £7000+ to have it put right when it is nothing to do with how they have looked after it, driven it or cared for it. It should have been down to Audi to recall (although not a safety issue) to have it corrected, to save all the time and money wasted by the Audi drivers who only in the end get to the same point as each other... New Pistons, engine breather, crank shaft etc. it would be better customer service at the end of the day.

Yes that is correct. Think of the MMI as a dipstick (although less accurate !). A dipstick has a min and max, same as the MMI, but is the minimum and maximum of the safe oil level range. In essence, if the engine holds 4.5l of oil for example (can't remember the exact figure), when the MMI shows minimum, the engine would have 3.5l of oil

i completely agree with you Pebble dasher, but I guess the question is how many cars does this affect? My local Audi dealer said that mine was the 5th 2.0T FSI they'd had in for this repair, 1 was fixed with new breather, 3 with pistons and mine with a new block. But in terms of how many 2.0T fsi engined cars they've dealt with over 4-5 years, what kind of percentage is this? Very low i would guess, perhaps 2-3%. Then take into accout, out of that small percentage, how many cars are outside of warranty (mine was over 120k for example) - I'd imagine you end up with a very small number of cars - It's a major problem for owners when it happens, but for Audi it's a very very small number of their customers that are affected

This has been a very interesting read ... I have just replaced my 54 plate A4 1.8T that has 267,000 + miles on it ( my wife now drives this ) and uses about a ltr of oil every 5000 miles to a new 2013 A4 2.0 ltr TDi 177 Quattro Black Edition I really hope this car turns out to be as reliable as my 1.8T or I will be kicking Audi's door down.........

You are right Rudders, it is definitely an owners problem once they buy the car. But we all know it is a manufacturing issue from Audi though, the piston rings both crack and allow oil to mix with the fuel which burns the oil away at a rapid rate, (something like that) One guy I dealt with at the Audi near me, tried to explain Audi are always upgrading parts and improving their engines etc... It annoyed me as this is nothing to do with better improving an existing engine, it is to do with getting an engine that has a fault with its pistons and is already in existence to work, their solution to this is to replace the piston/piston rings and a collection of other bits and charge lots of money for it and hope we don't complain.

I guess there is a percentage that go unreported, either they go to a normal local garage and get it sorted and think nothing of it, there will be the percentage who never come on here and there will be a percentage who never have any fault. It's those percentages that Audi rely on. Before I joined here, I went on several other forums and read a lot and American Audi just seem so helpful over there, whether it is just the law suits out there or what but they seem to get it done. Saying that, I had an email earlier to say I'd had a reply on a post of mine, it was from an American lawyer saying they have a case against the 2.0T Audi oil issue with their email address for me. Lol! But this really stretches worldwide, South Africa, Australia, America, Canada and the rest of Europe!

i rang Audi before to say I'll be back in a few days to bring my Audi in, I've done 360 ish miles now on my 1st stage oil compression test and on the MMI it is showing 1/4 litre left. That will be gone in a day or two. I have no idea what will happen now but I am just praying that the garage I bought the car from pay for the 2nd stage and they let Audi do it. Got to stay strong! Grrrrr.

Anthony 566 I'm sure that Audi will be fine! And wow, that is a lot of mileage on your wife's Audi!! ;o) that is the quality I'd expect from Audi! Not pistons going after 60000 miles.(

Thought I'd check in with another oil consumption report after the piston job.

1000 miles and zero oil consumption. Looks like the gallons of castrol edge I bought will only be used for oil changes!

Fuel consumption is now settling into mid to high 30s. I can probably get 40s, but i'm having to much fun!

Mine had just the pistons and conrods replaced. Bores were inspected and OK. Car has only covered 55K. I suspect those with high mileage borderline bores may still see some oil consumption as reported by others with 100k plus on them.

Had a scare with the MMI the other day, parked on the street to top up the screen wash, two wheels on the curb. Slammed the bonnet and the MMI said half full......drove it turned off thinking it would reset, still only half. Got home parked on the drive, opened the bonnet and closed it, MMI full again!

Needless to say, dipstick has been ordered! F*CK YOU MMI!!

Wow! Well I've done 404 miles and have just under 1/4 litre of oil left on the MMI so I expect it to fail stage 1, they have told me that they will do the pistons and Con rods on stage 2. So fingers crossed. Car in total has 66k miles.

Its nice to hear some good news for someone though! ;o)

Yours sounds just like mine. Limped into audi with light on at around 450-500 miles on consumption test. Similar miles too so it should be plain sailing once you've got it sorted.

Just don't take any sh*t from them and you'll be fine! :haudrauf:

Yeah I hope so! I know no two are the same but I'm really hopeful now! I just need to convince the garage I bought the car from to pay for it and ill be well happy!

I've hit 8000miles since the repair and I'm between half and 2/3 full on the mmi. Quite happy with that. Mine gets an oil change every 10k so mine shouldn't any top offs.

Does this happen to all of the Audi Tdi's ?? I am really concerned about this have just for the fist time gone for a Tdi after only driving petrol cars before.... :(

I thought this was for petrols not Tdis? I better re read

Not to my knowledge, most of us on this forum are 2.0TFSi petrol owners, not diesel! I'm sure your diesel will be fine mate!

Hi guys ,

so glad I found this thread.... I bought a A4 avant 2.0 tfsi quattro in June , private sale though.... After a While we realised something was up with oil consumption, it has 49k on clock now with full history. 3 stamps from Audi one from an Audi specialist.... I've had it into wearside audi for oil consumption test, and it's burning 3.1 litre per 1000km.
theyve told me I need new pistons and con rods. Audi uk have said they will cover all parts and dealer is reducing labour by 30%.
This still leaves me with a bill of £2400 of I get the work done....

are audi being generous here or should they pay the full lot. Spoke to audi uk but they said since I didn't buy it from audi, this is their best offer

cheers guys. Hope you can help
