Been looking at the progress of the 1.8T(transverse) engine being fitted with the K03/K04 from the 2.0 tfsi and just wondered if anyone has thought about putting one on our 1.8T's eg AJL in my TQS.

Seems to me it would be a good way of getting a reliable and decent BHP boost for a reasonable amount of cash, there are loads of tfsi K03's on Ebay for cheap money.

Saw it in the S3(8L) section, Prawn's car : here . Starts near bottom of the page.

He's using a K04, but the K03 will give 250ish bhp on a remap and it looks to be the right way around unlike the K04-23etc.

All that's needed to mount it is an adaptor plate that appears to be from beachbuggy.

Looks very promising to my eyes for our cars ie no aftermarket manifolds so potential oem reliability.

Ment to be best way to go cost vs bhp, considering it my self but not read in to it. But have belt and clutch ad a priority!!

Also have a ajl a4

Yep I'm very interested based on the bang per buck ratio. These turbos are available from much newer(low mileage) cars, are plentifull on Ebay for little money, have integrated exhaust manifold, so no need for cheap aftermarket manifolds that crack. The hotside faces the right way for our engines, just need an appropriate downpipe. Seems ideal.

if you want to mod your exhaust and tip to fit it' s ideal. But deffo go k04 to make the work worth while

Don't know the model numbers for the K03. Anything off a 2.0T surely. I'm only aiming for 250bhp, so K04 not required, will be more expensive anyway.

Defo should be doable, and i'd imagine the right assortment of standard B7 parts for the TIP and Downpipe should work pretty well.

Why wouldnt you just buy a Genuine new Borg Warner K04-064?

I cant see the FT being cheaper by enough, and its unlikely to be actual genuine BW parts.

I think even the TFSI K03 might well be a good option. It uses a 2080 compressor, which is bigger than the RS4 compressor that older hybrids like mine used, and AFAIK is what FT used on the F4L before he upgraded it to the 2180? wheel. And the other big advantage ofcourse is your getting a manifold and turbine assembly thats sized properly for that wheel, rather than a part designed for 150hp thats being pushed waaay beyond its limits.

sorry yes i had read that previously, i forgot! thing i notice is the actuator bracketed as part of the turbo housing, unless the pictures were at a funny angle. which means its would be hard to spin the housing, would be nice to see what that turbo could do,

It almost certainly doesnt if you use the A4 turbo.

But for instance if you used a K04-064 you might find that the compressor discharge points in the wrong direction, and thus you may need to rotate the compressor housing round to line it up correctly.

I doubt you can spin the housing on the K04-064 as youd be spinning the intake part towards the engine, is there not a K04 on the A4 platform ??

what would the TFSI unit put out on a remapped 1.8T with injectors/maf/fmic etc

from Prawn's thread "As arrived: 295bhp on actuator, 342 on boost.

As mapped: against the brake, really loading it up, 368-372 repeatably over 10+ runs. Flat out run giving everything it'll give gave 380bhp against the brake, 1.7 bar at 7k RPM, hitting some form of flow restriction somewhere, EGT's still good, temps great, just nothing more to come from it there.

As finished, low-370's against the brake, run in intertia mode as most dyno days would be, 378bhp 352lbft. "

Brad: No, the K04 upgrade for TFSI A4's essentially involves making the K04-064 from the S3 fit.

As jimmy says the K04 can make well over 350hp on a 1.8T with the right bits.

However even the Stock K03 TFSI turbo has been seen to approach 280hp on a TFSI, and prawns results would suggest to me that similar figures would be achievable on a 1.8T

I'm definately liking the sound of this more and more. I still think I'd go for K03 though as approaching 280hp would be more than enough for me at the moment. I'm currently working on a new downpipe with a relocated cat, so I'll need to modify my plans to include a tfsi turbo, maybe stick a v-band in just after the turbo so I can just make up a new short section to suit the new turbo flange.
