Im looking at a 2.0 tdi 170 next in a saloon. Other then the injector recall is there any other issuses with these?

also how are they on fuel, ie how many miles for say £20 worth of premium diesel?

any input is appreciated, thanks.

Ok here's my two penneth,
The Audi 2.O tdi engine is a dog and the B7 itself is quite possibly the worst car Audi have ever designed. I am speaking from driving this brand for over 30 years so I am no newcomer to Audi or the VAG group as a whole.

Issues with the 2.0tdi in my own personal experience after five years of ownership and taking the car from circa 40,000 to 100,000 miles are as follows;

  • Oil Pump balance shaft issue, this has killed many cars and emptied the pockets of many owners.
  • Injectors, well documented and a recall matter as you state you are familiar with.
  • EGR valve
  • Diesel Particulate Filter
  • Rear suspension causing early tyre wear and tracking issues at say 60,000 miles plus
  • A/C is of a poor design often needing the compressor replacing at almost five yearly intervals
  • Variable vane turbo can be troublesome, I replaced mine at 90,000.
  • MPG is good. My own Avant returns typically 44 - 50 mpg when measured ( Don't rely on the DIS)

And you still want to buy an Audi 2.0tdi.............................GOOD LUCK, I WISH YOU WELL !

I have a FWD 170 2.0 TDi. The main issues with the PD170 engine that I've come across so far are

- Oil Pump Balance Shaft
- DPF
- Weak turbo (Variable Vane)

I manage 600 miles to a tank in mine which is remapped to 200bhp/310 lb/ft (Dyno Dynamics roller).

The quattro manages less MPG and IMHO are better suited to the V6 3.0 TDi.

Totally agree with what dpaz said about quattro, never understood the necessity of quattro on lighter cars (although I'm now putting my flame proof jacket on as I'm sure people will disagree or have other opinions).

This sounds more like a tracking/geometry related problem rather than a flaw in the design or build quality of the car.

Again this isn't a case of poor design but simply poor quality components. Compressors fail all the time in loads of different cars. I've had one go in a Golf MK5 and a Vauxhall Corsa. VAG use different compressors manufacturers for the same model of car. It's pot luck whether you get a decent one.

Mmmm yes I have to agree with both your comments. I was just trying to let Singh know the extent of the issues I have experienced with my own vehicle. Both your observations are valid if I read my comments again and thanks for correcting me.

Thanks for the input guys.

The dpf and egr im also aware of, they will be deleted and then mapped.

Is there on more info on the turbos, how common are they to fail?

I have also owned and driven Audi's for the past 26 yrs, and tbh the B7 has it's issues, and not the best car they have put together. That said though, you will only really hear of the ones that go wrong generally. There are thousands on high miles without any issues at all. I have swapped out the oil pump balancer shaft with a remanufactured one with longer hex drive key (as a preventative measure), had the injectors done on recall, and now dealing with a smoke and rough idle issue - which seems to be related to the weakening of the flap in the egr valve, deleting and mapping out should rid me of that issue.

Other than that I love the car, and will still stay with Audi's.

Can't really get rid of this one lol, too much spent on modding haha

"dealing with a smoke and rough idle issue" I would also check the intake manifold actuator, cheap part to replace, and usually the culprit with this symptom. My egr valve was faulty but no smoke or idling issues.

For some reason I thought the Oil pump balance shaft only failed on the early 2.0tdi 54plate-06, would I need to worry about mine on a 2007 170 with 115,000 on the clock?

Tbh mate the best thing you could do is have a good read through the oil pump thread, its long but informative, mine is the 170 BRD, and the hex key was well worn, I'll put a pic up if I can from this device lol

I have a 2.0 tdi 170 Quattro,

so far needed dpf done, mine had the injectors replaced.

needs AC redone, I need turbo oil feed pipe, egr was deleted. its gash on fuel but im all up hill and a heavy car

A lot of the faults mentioned here are common accross every TDI engine I have encountered over various brands.

Turbo's, DPF and EGR faults are near enough unavoidable problems on any modern TDI.

My only advice is don't buy a car that has "done mainly motorway miles" TDI's need to be driven hard, not driven at low RPM for long periods of time.

Mine had an engine replacement before purchasing it. The car was doing a regen on a weekly basis, which was rather annoying. So I decided to get the dpf and map done. Its been brilliant since, hasn't missed a beat. It's actually for sale now :)
