MTC Cold air intake... Installed today with pics

Hey guys... Just a short thread on this, installed my MTC cai today with the ITG filter kit... Great piece of kit for the money and fits together nicely..

Matthew who makes the kit is a very nice fellow, very helpful. Hes just started his own company recently making these kits and they come in a few different colours.. theres a few threads going around at the moment, but heres mine, as hes being doing them a wee while and the kits have progessed since he 1st started doing them...

Completed installation in just over an hour.. The hardest parts of installation is getting the old engine cover mounts removed from the top where the new heat shield is to be installed, there a 2 10mm bolts underneath to be took off 1st, then they just unscrew.. A good set of mole grips is also required to removed some of he spring clips but come out relatively easy if you have the right tools.. I'm also going to get a small jubilee for the end of the recirculation pipe to just firm it up that wee bit more..... Had to trim some of the pipework at the filter for a nice fit, but obviously this will vary with each filter..

1st impressions are good... complete change in low end delivery and now feels a lot smoother with a nice sounding bit of suction.. Anyway i'm a happy camper, now for the uprated DV and TTS cover...

Very nice mate! Just watch where you have cut the bottom elbow shorter. I did the same but found the filter neck rubs on the hose bellow. So I swapped it round and just have the filter squashed up against the headlight

Thanks... I noticed that... I pulled it up slightly away from that hose before I tightened that last jubilee, so its kinda floating in mid-air now... was still touching the fuse box casing so a quick push into the actual filter at that side, took it away... not touching anywhere at the moment so happy

To me the very first pic as stock would be the best solution to cold air intake with smoother pipe work and a high flow filter all sealed from the engine bay...

Yeah looks good though!! Although it needs the engine cover back on :)

Looks are nothing unless its actually effective, given its hidden under the bonnet 24/7, I couldn't care if it looked a real mess under there, just needs to be functional otherwise its a waste of money, which allot of aftermarket filters & intakes actually are in comparison to oem.

It needs testing really to see what differences it makes against others including oem, otherwise its just a placebo.

Once the enigne covers back on there wont be a lot of warm air swarming around that bay... If you look at the bottom pic, the vent where the std duct was isnt blocked, it will still be loading that area with cold air + in addition to this, the cover behind the fog grill has been removed and there will be extra cold air coming up through the fog cover aswell... If i'm bored 1 day, I might even go the the trouble of fabricating a shield from the engine...

Noticed a difference with the low end delivery right away Nige... far smoother response at the low end... Whole engine feels a lot smoother with this, especially when removing accelerator after giving it the beans (Slightly) no aggresive judder, just nice smooth deceleration... Functionality over colour coding and looks for me and its very much a functional part.... i'm impressed!

Are you sure its not a placebo :p

Glad you're happy with it, I think as Boon has noted, shielding the filter from the box & engine heat, will do you nothing but good fella, open like that just makes its effectiveness less.

Do ya know... I was asking myself if it was a case of mind playing tricks... but the most notable difference is defo when you take your foot off the go pedal... no aggressive deceleration... it defo....defo feels a lot smoother :think: haha....
 
Looking good, please can you tell me what tool you used to remove the hose clips on the original TIP? It is the hose clip down at the bottom, below and to the right of the master cylinder.

Hi mate, thanks.... I just used a big set of mole grips, clamped over the top then screwed the grips tighter with the adjuster at the bottom and worked a treat, came off very easily..
 
I would shield the filter and at the back( the two mount bolts that are hard to get) and at the front, when I had my dbilas fitted to my ed30 the heat in the bay was damn hot @ crail would have to get the bonnet open between runs.
 
yeah heat shield would be nice, but once the car is moving there's not too much heat there.
i've made custom one from aluminum sheet, now i have new idea of making heat shield filter box out of carbon fibre...

you dont have to worry the same as a naturally aspirated car as its going to be heated up alot hotter when it does though the turbo and once its gone though the intercooler will get it to within a few degrees of ambient hopefully

i beg to differ as it's in a restrictive area for air flow, there is an extra bend over standard. It all starts with as much air - that's cold, or dense before it get compressed. I'm convinced it'll be filling up with warm air, yes a heat shield of some sort will very much help, but it'll also reduce air flow imo :)

But at the end of the day as long as you're all happy!!! If it works for you great!! :)
 
It works the results are proven! It's not in people's heads or placebo, there are numerous people who gain power, the standard one is far to restrictive above stage 1. The TIP alone is a big restriction. The bigger diameter pipe up to the MAF allow more air to flow and then when it reduces diameter the air picks up speed and is entering the turbo faster and there's more of it.

here's the one i made. it's made out of an 2mm aluminum sheet. it includes oem air feed and i have tubes from the fog light to the filter. does the job. also now i added top edge seal, and seal arround the hole so it doesn't cut the itg hose.
idea with the carbon fibre is to close complete right side over the filter including the part i've already made. it should seal the filter more and add a bit bling to the engine bay.

I don't necessarily agree with that theory - the turbo pulls air in, not the other way around, so you want a larger diameter pipe all the way to the turbo and not just to the MAF. I fitted the new Samco inlet pipe and it made 11ps on the dyno, no other changes, so there is a restriction there for sure.
 
It's the same argument about intercooler pipes if its smaller you get a faster air flow larger slower but the same amount of air is moved , the bigest problem is turbulent air ! Which is why the revo race intake is probably the best system

My comments apply for intercoolers too - ideally you want slower air to allow the IC's to do their job correctly i.e. provide the biggest drop in temp as possible - the faster the air goes through the less cooling happens. However, you can go too big and induce lag if you're not careful with the design.

Ideally you would have the bigger pipe all the way to the turbo but the reason for the smaller pipe is so the MAF still reads nearly correct. It will never read the same as stock due to the shape of the original MAF holder.
 
All I can say it that driving the vehicle now seems a lot smoother through the revs, an obvious difference at low end torque and not as jumpy with engine breaking when releasing the go pedal... There is plenty airflow in this area from stock... All be it, granted a shield as above will be more efficient and thats next on the hit list, you have that and the added airflow coming up through the meshed fog vents... The fact being its the beginning of winter and theres plenty of cold air around Glasgow at the moment... By speaking to the owner, these have been tested and dyno'd and the results for a Leon were an additional 16ps thats been the bes return hes seen... I'll be getting my car dyno'd soon so hopefully the results will speak for themselves... Car seems smoother, with a nice bitta noise coming from the engine bay now... Heat shield between filter and engine and extra airflow from standard duct and fog mesh, then I cant see why this could be anything else other than effective...
