S3 Winter tyres

Does anyone know what the wheel fitment is on the new S3 ? same as old 8P (or not).

I am thinking about getting some winter tyres (to use on current 8P) but will not bother if they are not directly transferable to 8V S3..

Current thinking is 225/45/17 winter tyres on 17in rims... but what rims that is the question....

I run my daily driver on steelies through the winter, but it's normal alloy is 19" and tyres are disproportionately expensive. The steelies are only 16" and work fine.

i will treat my new s3 to a set of audi OEM s3 alloys for winter treads as the 18" winter tyre are quite cheap at £145 each for Michelin alpine...

just hope they work as well on the s3 as my fwd mechanical diff ...

8P and 8V are the same fitment so in principle they are transferable. What you need to be careful of is not all wheel sizes will fit over the S3 brakes. Anything under 17" is out for a start, and even some 17s don't fit. So if you want to be certain they'll fit your 8V S3 you're looking at 18s, and swapping tyres or buying more alloys.

Your oEM alloys link just shows a pedals link?

I got the official winter pack from audi and my s3 should have them on when i pick it up on Tuesday. The homologated tyres are in fact 205/50 R17 93H XL M+S on 6Jx17 ET48 alloys.

There is a possibility of putting 18 inch snow tyres on but I'm not sure Audi has the official pack for those, and i didnt feel like spending a fortune on winter tyres.

im sure that putting H rated tyres on an S3 would be deemed either illegal or inappropriate by the law and your insurance company. The speed rating is far too low I think........I would check ASAP......:icon_thumright:

mmmmmm, speed rating is too low on H for an S3, I'd still confirm with insurance company before driving if I were you, seriously...

they will look at the fitment as a modification as the size is different from the factory standard specifiction anyway - best to ask in mhy experience.

I have some Vredestien wintracs from last year I used on the Cupra so will be putting them on the S3, they worked really well, where I live when it snows, it snows haha.

Wonder if the old Alloy wheels also fit, I have some 18" Pro Race 1.2s et45 sitting around also from the Cupra anyone???

Also asked this question before about speed rating to greenlight and H is 130mph and your never going to be doing that on UK roads in winter, they were totally happy for me to use them.

Hi RobH,

Winter tyres tend to have a slightly lower speed rating than standard tyres, but for obvious reasons relating to weather conditions this isn't usually a problem.

We had enquired and clarified the situation with our Underwriters a couple of years ago when we had a really severe dumping of snow, which is when we received confirmation that they were happy with winter tyres.

The rule of thumb is that as long as the tyre is road legal (ie. if it's an older tyre it still meets adequate tread requirements) and is fitted in line with recommendations of the vehicle manufacturer (or qualified tyre fitter) our Insurers will be fine and will not require specific notification of the tyre change.

Like you say, you're not going to be going at 149mph any time soon.

Your V Rated winter tyres will be fine

P.S. Even "H" rated tyres are rated at 130MPH, which being 60mph beyond the national limit are also more than adequate

I would have thought that there might be a possibility over overheating winter tyres if they are run too fast. Might account for the lower speed rating?

I would never modify a car or fit anything not approved . Heard stories of Insurers rejecting claims when cars are modified, even minor stuff like painting the wheels a different colour.

Not sure if you're referring to me or making a general statement but as said they're approved as seen on this s3's door sticker . As long as they're homologated i don't see how an insurance company not pay up in case of a claim? I asked for peace of mind just like Rob did but there's no chance they can refuse it if the car manufacturer themselves have recommended this size for winter tyres.

For peace of mind I'd advise anyone changing to winter tyres to at least contact their insurance company. At least then they'd know any accident would be covered for sure..
