hi
as above temp guage is only going to 80 deg, have replaced stat and temp sensor.... any ideas

thanks mark

There might be air in the system! Feel the radiator hoses when the car is up to temp an if one is cold (usually the top hose) it means you have air in there stopping the warm coolant getting round to opening the stat.

hose did feel warm but not roasting .. whats the best way to bleed? did try running the engine with exp cap off..

mark

run with cap off for an hour squish top hose aswell
if no joy im sure theres a bleed screw somewhere
i know there is on the b6 and b7

Be very carefully with the cap off! Have you seen Andrew@ALD's thread?

Anyway, cap off, car running, whack your heating on full blast, keep giving the top hose a squeez and the air should work it's way round and out the header tank. You should see the bubbles. Stop once the stat has decided to get up to 90.

Also I'm assuming you used a stock stat and not one rated at a lower temp?

ye new stat from audi !! ye did see the thread ! scary stuff....you would think there would be a bleed screw handy some where?
cheers mark

i forget about the heaters on full
and as above is it a oem stat or aftermarket
iv had problems with gsf stats in the past

Sorry to hijack the thread, but is the coolant temp supposed to rise to 90 and stay there? My S3 tends to sit at 80, but hits 90 after a hard run

You dont need the heater on full.

No idea why that myth perpetuates round and round the internet.

The dashboard heat setting does not alter anything to do with the engines coolant flow.

no luck.... gave the top hose a loads of squeez untill it haw to hot to touch but still sitting at 80, could this be bleed from the coolant sensor point?
would there be an issue with the pump? had it replaced 1000miles or so ago.

mark

i had this same issue after i bought a cheap stat off ebay, replaced with a stat from audi and solved the problem.

put the climate control into diagnostic mode and see what it says the temperature is...

Hold down recirc and press the up arrow
Display changes to 1c
use temp +/- control to make the display show 49c
Press recirc again

Live coolant temperature will be displayed, you can then drive around and watch what it does.

isn`t the green coolant sensor at the right hand side of the head prone to need replacing if your getting funny temp readings?

They dont fail as often as folk seem to think, its usually the thermostat.

In any case, hes already changed it!

ye have replaced the thermostat from audi, have replaced green temp sensor not audi.

aragorn are the temps shown taken from the green temp sensor?

cheers mark

yep. But the cluster adds in all sorts of buffering and hysteresis, the climate readout is a unaltered live display of the temperature.

ok temp on air con only goes to max 75deg . mix of motorway and town driving. any ideas.

mark

I'd stick another new stat in it personally. OEM doesn't necessarily mean infallible. Either that or test what temperature it actually opens at using a thermometer and a slowly heated pan of water.

You dont need the heater on full.

The dashboard heat setting does not alter anything to do with the engines coolant flow.

It's considered good practice as a lot of cars do control interior heater temperature by controlling the coolant flow through the matix. If you know for sure the car you're doing it on doesn't then fair enough, but it doesn't hurt to get into the practice of it in case the next car you're faced with does.

I'd have said the stat is faulty, however you've now said you fitted a fake temp sensor. These can be hit or miss. Stick the original one back in and see how it changes. If it stays at 75c max then the stat is faulty.

ye will try the sensor ...if that does not work time to whip out the stat.

i have exactly the same problem as you i replaced the state & sensor back in feb, i bought a sensor off ebay so unsure if its genuine or not. Keen to hear how you get on with this as i havent the time to sort it at the moment.

oem one out the scrappy...... quage back to 90d and ac unit reads around 93... issue seems to be cts.

still think i have an airlock will run it for a while....aux water pump not running when engin ****ched off.

anyone know how to change the temp reading on the dash from f to c as i adont know how i managed to change it.

thanks

mark

Never buy cheap crap parts thinking you've saved yourself a fortune. If anything you'll have spent more because the cheap crap will last you a month or two and then you will have to buy the real thing. Don't buy an audi and put cheap tacky vauxhall Peugeot parts on them! Audi'so deserve to be looked after. Wether it's an 80 or an r8.

Did you cure this with a new CTS ?

ye mate all seems sorted, temp gets to 90 and sits there like it used to.

mark

What are your symptoms?

Its almost always the stat.

The problem here was that he had a knackered stat, then fitted a cheap CTS which was duff.

I did exactly the same, my stat is a genuine VAG item but my sensor isn't.

also getting mpg back to what it was...heating up faster= + 3 to 4mpg

Ive been wondering about my temperature gauge for a week or so now. When i have the heater on it doesn't seem to get upto 90, hitting no more than 75-80. As soon as i turn it off. It rises to 90.
Thermostat????
cheers.

Had the exact same problem. Replaced the temp sensor, no change then the thermostat after which sorted the issue. Weak stat didn't stay closed for long enough so the engine only got to temp after a fair amount of driving.
