Hi,

I am currently on the lookout to get my first ever Audi - moving up in the world from a Ford Mondeo 2.2 Diesel

I'm having to look at used A4 Avant (11/61) and so pre-facelift (sad as I prefer the leds on the latest car). Anyways, I digress!

I've been looking up all the different engines and my original reaction was to buy the diesel 170, however, having read up, it looks like mpg isn't great and there's at least one reoccuring issue with the DPF. I'm also now thinking the 136bhp as that's got better economy and isn't rapid but quick enough.

My wife will mostly be driving the car on the school run as well as other short trips for her work and running the usual family errands - very little long motorway driving other taking kids out on weekends and the odd weekend visiting friends & family who range from 30-90 mins away.

I'm wondering whether the upside on the diesels (mpg, residuals etc) is countered by our requirements and also the DPF issues. So, I'm now seriously considering the 170bhp TFSi due to lower petrol costs, cheaper to buy, more reliable (?) etc.

I'd really welcome thoughts as this will be a lot of money for me and I really want to make sure I make the right choice as I'll be looking to keep the car for a few years.

Many thanks all!

G.

Isnt the general opinion, diesel isnt worth it unless you do over 12.5k miles a year. Which you prob dont do from what you say.

Fair enough. So is it best to go with manual or automatic? I prefer manuals but are the Audi ones good or are they like stirring porridge?

My B8 A4 g/box is the best ive had for years. Drops in each gear sooo nicely.

I don't think the mpg on the 170bhp diesel is that bad tbf. My wife has been driving mine round while on maternity leave and only doing short journeys and it's averaging 44mpg..... Agreed it's not as good as the claimed combined figure but it isn't too bad :)

I've currently got the DPF dodgy sensor issue which is a cheap fix and if the DPF does go then it'll be getting ripped out and remapped so it's not the end of the world!

Why not factor in a remap with EGR and DPF removale on the 170?

No need to remove the dpf on the 170s, it's an urban myth usually peddled by remapping companies..

use decent fuel, and you'll be fine

Will you not get better gains by removing the dpf? Can imagine it being pretty restrictive

We've tuned 100s of 2.0 tdis and have seen rolling road figures of between 210/220bhp with a dpf

Is the MPG taken from the DIS or a proper fill to fill??

I only just jumped onto the A4 section as thinking of selling the S3 in the near future as it's got a bit small for the family, and having a nose about real world fuel economy of A4's, as the S3 is not great lol,
so started looking at A4 quattros, I've heard the 170 wasn't that good with late 30's mpg (Quattro) our TT can do it's claimed quiet well if driven like a nun! 44 seems normal, more reaserch need as torn between petrol and diesel again! and the 3.0's too

Another one for "ignore" the DPF problems, as been said, good fuel and don't poodle everywhere in 6th, you'll be fine, my first Tdi TT was mapped from new and never had a DPF problem.

Just my 2p worth.
I went for the 143BHP Black Edition thinking the same as you and the MPG is pants.
Struggled to get 40MPG on my daily commute where my previous 2.0TDi VW managed 60MPG and it was the 170BHP.

I wouldn't mind if it was down to performance but it's gutless too.
I eventually got a tuning box and while that gave it a little oomph, I'm still only seeing around 43MPG

Stunning looking car though, mines is an avant in black, and the chassis is nice to drive quickly on twisty bits.

i recently drove a 2.0TDI 150PS 2WD Auto, and to be honest it was really gutless and i was left feeling underwhelmed. I did find out that the 150ps in the A4 isn't the new engine found in the new A3/Golf etc
