So, this morning i was on my way to work to sort out an emergency with our work servers (Work in IT). I Had the whole day planned out and it was vital i turned up.

Then all of a sudden.... I was in a 60, doing 60 and an elder woman pulled out on me. I have no idea how she didn't see me. The road is straight for about 2 miles and you can see all the way down it. There was no rush the roads were empty, she just wasn't paying attention.

I was so close to her when she pulled out and she was going very slow. I had 2 choices and i chose to 'Undertake' her on the curb over smashing in to her with a 50mph difference. I missed her car by millimeters, i even braced myself for the impact and to my surprise, it didn't come. I went up on to the curb on my side of the road and shattered my front wheel and tyre. By this point i was heavy on the brakes and because of the front wheel i broke traction and came off the curb, now in front of this lady. I was now sideways and i just couldn't regain control. I fought with the car for what felt like years and when i finally go traction and had lost most of my speed, i was facing the right way, on the wrong side of the road. I was still sliding at this point and slammed into the curb dead side on, on the wrong side of the road. I hit the curb so hard it actually broke the curb. I ended up on the curb by the time i had come to a complete stop. I shattered both drivers side wheels and tyres as well. Wish bone is bent and hub assembly is cracked.

Luckily i wasn't far from my local Audi garage so after swapping details with this elderly lady i go the car to the Garage. The lady has admitted it was her fault and was very apologetic. Even said my driving was like something out of a movie and she was very impressed i managed to miss her. It was miraculous. She said all the damage will go through her and her insurance. Bless her.

Audi said i cant take the car home because it is dangerous to drive. They very actually brilliant and i am so impressed with them. I haven't been impressed before. I think they realise what it must be like to crash your Audi and they did everything they could for me and didn't even charge me for the assessment. They are going to phone me on Monday with an exact price but they reckon about £2000.

I'm glad i'm ok. I'm glad the lady is ok. & I'm glad my car is repairable, but I'm still heartbroken.

However it does mean i have to get the train into work tomorrow on a SUNDAY. This is the worst weekend ever. Can't even go to my Halloween party tonight and dress up like a ghost :(

It's a fact lots of old people drive way under the speed limit, 40 in a 60 and it makes people frustrated to say the least.
I almost plowed into one myself almost the same as the Op above.
I think it's great that the elderly can still drive places to enjoy their life but seriously some of them shouldn't have a license as their reactions aren't really that good.
Sorry if that's ruffled any of the older members feathers :p

Sorry to hear that, glad you are ok, nowadays you must watch out elderly people more than anyone else...

The worst part of it all it that from experience the car will never be the same again. Kerbs are the devil.

Don't say that. My car drove perfectly :(

Very believable mate... Some old folks are shocking... This morning going to pick up my mate for the moffat meet... Im sitting waiting to turn right on a duel carriageway, when I see a car driven by an elderly gentleman.. Clicking in my head (somethings not right here) he was driving up the wrong side of the road on the duel carriageway! ... Eventually when met with on coming traffic he decides to do a 3 point turn... Thankfully there was no accidents, but it just goes to show....

Thats mental mate. Absolute madness.

They say these young drivers are missing experience, and i agree with that to a certain point but this lady probably has been driving double the amount of time i have been alive and still made a moronic mistake which could have been a lot worse. I would have never pulled out like she did even in a 2L Audi, let alone a Honda Jazz.....

Yeah mate I know... Sorry to hear bout your car though... Thankful no 1 was hurt

Did you get a witness? Wouldn't be the first time that the offending driver suddenly changes their mind about who was to blame, insurance companies can also get a bit funny about their customers admitting liability. Hope it works out for you.

****. there was 2 witness' but i was in too much shock to think to ask for their details. First time I've been in an accident.

To be honest she is very elderly and just recently been widowed i really doubt she has any malicious intentions. I know anything is possible though. I will undoubtedly keep tis thread updated. I really hope everything works out also.

That sounds scary! A worst nightmare that is, someone pulling out on you like that when there is no road to get away from them. +1 on glad you are ok.

ISorry if that's ruffled any of the older members feathers :p

Oi You! :motz:
I get sick to the teeth of dodging kids (girlies are the worst) txtng instead of keeping their eyes on the road, they think they're so ****** clever! :racer:

I've been driving since I was 9, I'm 73 now, drive every day and I still learn something new every day. The day I don't, I'll pack in driving.....

Sorry to hear that, OP, but it could have been anyone having an off-day. :sorry:

Appreciated. Everyone makes mistakes, even professional drivers. No one was hurt so it can be easily forgiven.

I do think that the elderly should have something better than self certification in order to keep on driving.
Many years ago when my Dad was 79 he said to me that he wanted me to go out with him in his car and for me to assess his driving ability regarding safety and awareness. If I had said no Dad after the assessment, he would have sold the car straight away.
This was to happen on our next visit up from the Midlands to York and I was not looking forward to it. Imagine if I had said he was OK and the next week he had had an incident similar to the OP. In the mean time he became ill and never drove agin and so I was let off the hook.
However now we are in a similar situation in that my Aunt who is 91 still drives (badly) but she will not listen to any suggestion that she hangs up the driving gloves for good. I worry about the other road users that she seems oblivious of as she cuts from lane to lane.
Any ideas of what to do in this situation?

Peter

Personally,

I wouldn't have done what your Dad asked you. I would have got him a lesson or two with a driving instructor to see what he thinks. I would do this with your Aunt also. If you buy them and gift them, rather than suggesting, she may feel more pressured to have a lesson or two. I'm sure she would listen to a professional more readily than a family member just out of respect for his expertise. This is what a family friend has done with their grandparents and one of them went on to have 10+ more driving lessons and the other gave up driving completely. It worked very well and kept their relationship strong as no criticism was directly voiced.

I knew I'd get a bite somewhere ...
I agree the youngsters are just as bad and what with technology it's impossible for them to breathe without touching their phone ;)
I'm sure ur a good driver as are most older people :)
As u pointed out everyone can have an off day and have something on their minds :)

Totally agree! Talked to my optician about this and he said he can't even intervene if his patient's half-blind. He can only recommend!!!

That is a good idea which I will be able to work into a conversation.
Thank you very much,

Sorry to hear about what happened to your car mate.
Lucky nobody got injured in this incident.

This Saturday was driving with my other half and had a guy in an 06 plate estate VW Passat cut me in from the outside lane on a roundabout. He squeezed right in front of me and despite having hit the brakes hard I bumped into him. Then he starts throwing insults at me and threatening, but as soon as I got out of the car he starts running away (I do hit the gym regularly)!

Mental. I jumped back in fuming and went after him but missus was in a state of panic and had to let it go.

Got his number plate and it was definitely his fault as he cut into my lane but the dent is so minimal I don't think it's worth going through the insurance.

What an idiot, though!

I'm guessing the ESP was on. Although I love to turn it off sometimes for some fun (traction off at least) I honestly believe that it can really work some magic when the wheels are on different surfaces and the car is risking getting seriously out of shape.

Either way ESP on/off it still sounds like a bit of heroic driving and lightning response.

Just glad everyone is ok and the lady is being genuine about owning up.

Yeah ESP was on. The car lost control very quickly after smashing the front wheel, though that's no surprise.

Thanks, I like to think it was a good bit of driving. I was focused on my options really. It's amazing how many tiny little decisions your brain makes in such a short period of time. I was definitely focused on the gap between her and the curb, rather than her car. I think if you focus of what you are about to hit your more likely to hit it. Which is why I managed to squeeze past her. If my reaction and driving are the only good things in this then so be it!

Yep she is getting it sorted for me. Lovely old lady.

In keeping with my "anything's possible" theory, do not take her word for it that it will be sorted smoothly by her insurance company

it might, but still, her insurance company may well advise her against accepting liability as a means to not paying out, not to mention lack of witness details

Ah I had forgotten about this thread. Yes there is a big update. I'll post it w/ pics tomorrow. Happy new year guys!

Cheers, just a little curious lol, happy new years to you too and everyone else :)
