Cambelt gone

Cam belt went our car the other day on 20tdi 170. Garage has said they don't know what damage has been done, and that my best option is to have a belt fitted and see if there is any damage, if no damage then fit complete new cam belt kit.
?
 
did it snap? was the car running? if so there would most likely be engine damage
 
What car is it? If it's diesel then most likely the engine has been damaged, last time someone told me it has cost them over £1k to get the engine sorted...But if it's an T FSI and chain snapped then might not have been damaged or at least minor damage hopefully! Chains only need to be maintained and not replaced, this is what I've been told by special Audi mechanic...Hope you get it sorted!
 
Definitely will be damage if you were driving. I had a mk1 golf that some garage screwed up the new timing belt and it snapped a mile from the garage. I was idling in traffic at the time, the belt was redone and the engine was fine. The mk1 gti engines may have been non interference engines though. ???
 
It's an interference engine, no point putting a belt on it. Game over. Either repair or replace.
 
It's a 2.0 tdi and was on dual carriage way at the time. Not looking good then. Had loads of problems with this car and now this happens. Bummer
 
I've just read your thread from yesterday. What's gone on, did the belt snap when driving or did the garage knacker it as you say they had it started but it was knocking?

I feel for you any way pal. I bought a pile of crap as well.
 
If a garage has told you that the next step is to put a new belt on it and see if there is damage then I wouldn't take my car there as they clearly clueless.

The valves WILL have hit the pistons therefore you are looking at new pistons, valves and cylinder head.
 
Ok, what's this going to cost and would you take it to a audi garage to have works done, what's the average cost at a garage compared to a audi garage ?
 
Only way to check what damage is done is to take the head off and look.
I think u need to find out when the belt has snapped as ur last post said they tried for ages to get it going.
With a bit of luck they snapped it trying to get it going and will fork out for the repair work :)
Worth checking the service history and or receipts to see when the cambelt has been changed before.
 
Audi Garage = megabucks
Indy Garage = loads cheaper.
Think u need to get it fixed as cheap as possible and trade it in m8 :)
 
Looked through history and can't find any record of belt being done, Sod's law it was the next thing we were going to have done, but with the other problems we've had it was put back. I'll ring the garage in the morning and see exactly what they have done. I've always used this garage with other cars and they have been really good and honest.

Has it been serviced by audi in the service log book m8?
Should have been done 60k miles or 5 years.
I know it's sods law :(
Really it's a lesson learned for lots of people who moan about the price of getting the belt and water pump done.
 
Update, car is fu.... Any one now of any one in the Yeovil, somerset area that they would recommend as the garage I use do not have the specialist tools needed for the job ?
 
might be cheaper and quicker to just stick a new engine in.
 
Where is the best place to get a new engine and what sort of money would it be and the cost of fitting ?
 
What is your engine code? Should be in your service book.

I would guess you are looking at £500 for another engine and then £500 labour to have it fitted.
 
What would the engine code look like, is that £500 for a recon or out of a scrap car ?
 
maybe about a grand for engine. when you add up headgasket set, new valves, maybe a piston or two it would easily hit a grand.

might be better having the head removed and a better assessment of damage before going down that road though. you might be lucky, head off, few valves, back on and job done.

Does that sound ok ?
 
Not necessarily pistons are pretty strong where valves bend easily.
 
Pistons will still suffer from damage and marks from valve contact.
 
Ive had a belt go before (not an audi) and the pistons were 100% fine. just bent valves. I guess it depends on how much room there is for the valve to bend
