There are different types of control modules in vehicles. To that end, on
modern cars, there can be "CAN" protocol modules, and "UDS" protocol
modules. The Airbag module is a UDS version. The Engine Control Module is
also a UDS type module. With these types of modules, VCDS has to identify
the specific module and then uses a "ROD" file to interpret the data from
the module into something useful for us to look at. However, the Airbag is
not reporting a part number. This is what your report shows:

---------snip-(your scan)----------------------------

We should see something more like this:

---------snip-(sample scan)-------------------------- Address 15: Airbags

---------snip-(sample scan)--------------------------

Since your Airbag module is not reporting a part number, I'm thinking the
module itself might not be to factory design. A few things that come to
mind that could cause something like this... voltage issues could damage the
module... and we've seen cases where low quality (junk) scan tools can
damage control modules.

The first fault code that is listed, 13697280, that DTC number looks to be a
Component Protection: Active code. Component Protection is something that
only the dealer can resolve.

Above is the scan N8 did for me and ross tech help

So, what do you all think?
Is it a knackered module due to voltage? Or is it got component protection active?
only reason I ask is if you look at the scan there are a few faults which show component protection active but the module can still be read.
Where is the airbag module located on the b8 ?
does anyone know what the correct part number should be?
with there being a few component protections active, will audi charge per module to correct or just an hourly rate?
will the airbags still work In a crash with the way it is now?
Sorry for all the questions
cheers

Can someone help with the location of the air bag module on my b8 and what the correct part number is, please. Just want to check it's the rigt module and no cables have come loose before taking it to audi to get the component protection possibility looked at.

looks to me like the airbag module has had the crash data reset .
thanks for the reply.
Does that mean the module is knackered and a new one is needed? Why would it not show parts number when it's scanned and logs?

it could be for a few reasons ,might be a second hand unit from another car , could be a communications problem from the unit ,it could have had the eeprom cleared to remove the evidence of a crash stored in the unit .

so how is best to proceed from here?
Do you know where the module is located so I can check connections and the part number?

Just been reading the handbook and it says the airbag light should stay lit for 2 secs when starting the car, mine doesn't light up at all
is this because it is component protection active or faulty?
Cheers

just a little update, spent all night trying to locate the module and finally found it, its located under the armrest area but you have to remove the full centre console to get access to it. anyway had a look at the module and it definitely has signs that it has been tampered with, all the security screws have been damaged. question is, why would someone need to go into the module, what have they done and can it be fixed? cheers

i would be examining the car for signs of an accident , the airbag module has been opened to read the eeprom data and reset it by the looks of it . poor workmanship on the module by the cowboy who's opened it

as above
iv sent a few off to be sorted and they come back looking good
someone has butchered that 1 to clear the memory
so really looks like your car may have had a smash at some point
or the modual failed and was fixed

didn't trust that module anymore, so binned it and bought a new (used) one, which I need to get the component protection removed from but as soon as I plugged it in more things started to work. i.e, the airbag sign near the hazard button lights up as it should, the red seat belt light now comes on and beeps if I don't put it on and drive, and if the seat belt isn't on then the handbrake wont auto disengage I have to manually do it
so I would definitely say some cowboy has had a go at it to disable important safety features like this

the seat belt warning and handbreak etc is done by VCDS etc
and not be opening the unit
id still be looking for signs of crash damage.

i know they are vcds options but with the old module changing the codes did nothing. I'm not ruling out it's been in a crash but someone had definitely done something which stopped the seat belt/ seat from knowing it's occupied and the air bag lights would never light up
ill have a good look at weekend but I did give it a good going over when I bought it for signs of damage

open the old 1 up and post a picture

open the old 1 up and post a picture
I did mate before I binned it but had to drill the middle screw out and cought the pcb with the drill bit.
This was the only obvious damage I could see,
I'll try and grab it in the morning and post a pic

here are the pics of the module, ignore the hole in the middle I did that :keule:
