Hi.

My 1st post !

I have owned my 1st Audi A3 Sportback TDi E 1.9 for two yrs now, has 92k on the clock and no serious probs ...so far but I would like to upgrade to something with a bit more spec Leather seats Etc I know the power output of the twin cam 2.0 is more than the 1.9 but which engine is the most reliable and has the best longevity? I am no boy racer (well I was once, an old fart of 60 yrs old now) and the 1.9 is quick enough for me, but there seems to be more 2.0 higher spec A3s on the market so just would like to know?.

Thanks in advance.

I would say 1.9 stronger engine parts are easy as pie to find now and I think are more fun to drive as the 2.0 fell flat as can be !

Definitely the 1.9 better fuel economy and have seen them with 3-400000 miles on. Also sold a A4 1.9 Tdi to a VW master technician and he had the same opinion and wouldn't look at a 2.0 i had on site would only entertain the 1.9.

2.0tdi is more defined, defo worth the extra you pay for it, good residual values too

I wouldnt have another 1.9 after having a couple of 2.0s. Much nicer drive and with a gentle remap even nicer again as it gets rid of the flatness feeling.

Early 2.0s were a lottery the later ones much better.

The 1.9 is a better engine just put an 150 turbo and injectors on it get it mapped , miles better system than the 2.0 they only swapped to the 2.0 due to emissions regulations , poor heads , poor injectors , rubbish design oil pump rubbish turbos nothing much going for the 2.0

its better to drive, which ultimately is what its all about :)

The large majority of bits can be retrofitted, so if you decide to keep it, you could always add the bits that you'd wanted.

1.9 PD.

I ran an early ARL engined PD150 (stage 2) for 11 yrs and 103k with no engine probs other than a dodgy tandem pump and sticky turbo vanes.

It never suffered the dreaded cam follower failure either as it was serviced away from the stealer network using the correct oil by someone who knows what they're doing:)

You only have to look what darkside developments do to cars with standard internals on the 1.9s 400hp in opened they did get 500 but a piston blew up

in all honesty i don't think op wants to buy it to tune it. But yes darkside lot are nutty with their cars lol.

OP if you want to go for a good spec, might be best to go for the 2.0 tdi as I don't think there was ever a 1.9 tdi s-line ever made( correct me if im wrong). But generally spec is good all round on both the 1.9 and the 2.0, but you get that s-line badgeee if you go for the 2.0 tdi

No I'm not saying the op is but it gives you an idea how strong they are ! Is a car can take like 3.5x its original output it's got to be built very well or over engineered as you would say !

Hi.

Many thanks to all the response, I have just bought a 2009 2.0 TDi SE 140 bhp Leather interior, DRL, all the bells and whistles.
Drives very much nicer and quicker than the 1.9 TDi but at a cost of more VED and MPG, was put off of the late 1.9 TDi BXE due to the reliability issues.

Once again thanks for the advice.

Grey haired Racer.

Tony.
